Sinners In The Hands of Rod Meredith's Constantly Angry "god"

In a letter from Rod Meredith to his followers dated April 16, 2013 he has the following postscript.
It is in regards to the Boston bombings.  It is all about how America is being punished by the angry pissed-off god that Rod believes in and whom he wants to see dish out destruction upon all sinners. Death and destruction seems to be constantly on his mind, at least when sex is not being discussed.

P.S. My friends, just as I was finishing writing this letter, news came of the terrible attack at the Boston Marathon. So far, we know that at least three people were killed and over 175 were seriously injured. It was obviously a terrorist attack—involving either homegrown or international terrorism. But the lesson we need to think about here is that we have warned you again and again that—unless America and the British-descended peoples turn to the God of the Bible, He will severely punish our peoples for our own good. Almighty God warned our forefathers—as I have cited many times—“But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it” (Leviticus 26:14-16). The Hebrew word “terror” can well be translated “terrorism”! And the wasting diseases such as AIDS, cancer and related diseases are certainly beginning to strike down our people with increasing frequency. Yet we have not repented! The God of the Bible seems “far off” to most people. But He will get their attention as these various attacks and calamities will come upon us with increasing frequency unless we begin to realize why things are all “going wrong” for the United States and the British-descended peoples—the peoples who were given the opportunity to send out more Bibles, more missionaries and medical workers than any peoples on earth. We have had much of the knowledge of God. But we have now forsaken our Creator by our actions and our “lawless” acts even in condoning “same-sex marriage”! We are showing Almighty God personally and officially how we “despise” His statutes and His Ten Commandments. May God help us to wake up and realize why these disasters are happening and turn back to the God of the Bible!

The idea that any deity "punishes us" with water, wind, rain , fire, explosions, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, tsunami, earthquake and Bob Thiel is just Bronze Age ignorance and insanity. Well not the Bob Thiel part. :) dd

For those with "eyes to see" (crooked book-shelves) and "ears to hear" (strange off-camera noises), Bob Thiel is the groovyest and truthyest of them all!

OK, if God is punishing America why is life expectancy going up?

Any why did he allow that Ralph Nader guy to beat the powerful big car companies and get seat-belts in cars? Must have saved a million lives!

And what's with those damn air-bags? Must be saving lives every day!

Sounds like Satan is winning the war: the death rate is going down, not up!

Shit happens. Yes, it does. Has been happening for billions of years right here on this planet and it's just the vagaries of happenstance.

No God wiped out the amphibians or the dinosaurs, etc. When volcanoes, floods, comets and asteroids and tidal waves, etc. wiped out life wholesale at random times, it was just the normal cycles of a turbulent earth and universe. There will be disasters tomorrow. I can guarantee it. Also, the day after. Makes it real easy for a closet sadist like Meredith to claim prescience. He always was a hateful bag of hot air.

Those of you that mock Mr. Meredith forget that he has witnessed the decline of this nation into the cesspool it is now. It grieves him to see the moral decline of the people of this country.

He has been a voice crying in the wilderness for the last 60 some years of his ministry. I would not want to be in the shoes of those of you that mock him here.

Okay, lets just assume that Meredith is sincere, and not just regurgitating hackneyed phrases from someone else's "ministry" for fun and profit.

What was Herbert Armstrong's excuse? When Herbert started prophesying in 1927 or 1934, or whenever, what was the moral decay about then? Flappers? Al Capone? Bootlegging? Tenement housing?

Is moral decay something that's continual and only goes one way? The debauchery of Rome was legendary, yet that gave way to...Christianity? Actually, Augustus Caesar was a big promoter of moral virtue, but what Romans believed was virtuous just happened to be different than what Christians believed.

Morals don't really decay, they shift. People's ideas about the right way to conduct one's self change over time. When your ideas are static, you interpret that change as decay, and that's one of the stories you perceive.

Any story you want to tell about history, you can support with facts. Sure, you can find facts to support the idea that the last 60 years of history was about moral decline. But you can also find facts to support a diametrically opposite story of the last 60 years. You could do the same thing with any story for any period of history.

I'm not going to tell you you're wrong. You're not wrong because opinions don't exist in the binary space of objective right and wrong. But this means that every other story of history is also neither right nor wrong. In addition, the world is a big place, and more than one thing can happen at once. The world is big enough that even diametrically opposed things can happen simultaneously.

Humanity has always been and will always be in a state of flux. And yet, the world of human beings has never come to an end. The worst disaster by far in the last thousand years was bubonic plague. Why? Ignorance. We didn't know what caused disease, how it spread, or what to do if you fell ill. Armstrongites will usually respond with, "Yes but...the principle of quarantine can be found in the bible." True, but quarantine is ineffective whenever a person becomes contagious before showing symptoms, so even though quarantining was used, it didn't work. Anyway, the point is, bad things happen randomly, not because of shifting ideas about the proper way to behave or "moral decline." And even the worst things that have ever happened have not brought about "the end of the world" as we know it or otherwise.

So, I respect Herbert Armstrong's opinion that this whole world is a "cesspool" which Meredith has been pollyparroting for 60 years, and now you pollyparrot too. Sure there's a lot wrong with the world. My opinion is that the net effect of the current combined predicaments of humanity render it not significantly "righter" or "wronger" or "better" or "worse" than it has ever been, just different. It's sort of a theory of the economy of all things, including cesspools. The problem is, your opinion of what would "fix" the world would be to make the world static and unchanging, and honeychil' that's just not in the cards, now or ever. The more things change, the more they stay the same...and the beat goes on.

"Dozens of prophesied events indicate that this final revival of the Roman Empire in Europe -and its bestial persecution of multitudes of Bible-believing Christians - will take place within the next seven to ten years of YOUR LIFE!"

That was Rod in 1963. I was born almost twenty years after that. Did I miss the Beast somewhere?

RSK asked,"Did I miss the Beast somewhere?"

MY COMMENT - No, you didn't miss the Beast. The Beast was the money hungry self serving Worldwide Church of God that consumed the dumb sheep's tithes, offerings, special offerings, Holy Day offerings, member estates, and don't forget the all important Building Fund, all so little Joey Tkach could some day hijack the Church assets and be a multi multi millionaire.

The Beast's offspring still needs to be fed to this very day. Why work for a living in the real world when all that is needed is a few dumb sheep to support you.

From my Sabbath Services and Bible Study notes:

"Another age will start within the next 3 to 5 years” (April 7, 1969 Roderick C. Meredith sermon, Special Bible Study).

With such a belief no wonder the world is heading towards a catastrophic end, God or no God.

"With such a belief no wonder the world is heading towards a catastrophic end, God or no God."

Your beliefs are not your own, they were handed to you by another man. He told you the world was headed toward a catastrophic end. Maybe it is and maybe it isn't. Since we're smart enough to figure out how to build nuclear bombs, maybe we're also smart enough to figure out how to avoid using them.

He told you that he alone could teach you the "right" way to live so that you could "earn" a ticket to "the place of safety." Yet neither HWA nor his flunkies set a good example. None of them lived that "right" way they told you to live. That proves they didn't put any stock in what they were telling you. They knew there was no such thing as "the place of safety." They knew the world wasn't about to end. When they were telling you there was no need to invest in your future, they were busy investing your money in their futures.

The fact is, there are a lot of different perfectly viable cultures in the world, and they all have different ideas about proper conduct, morality, and everything else in life, and they've withstood the test of time, or else they wouldn't be here. Guess what, the corporate culture of the WCG and the COGs isn't withstanding the test of time. The COGs are headed toward a catastrophic end faster than the rest of the world. It's a good thing the COGs don't have nuclear weapons, or WWIII would have already happened.

If Rod cares about America's decline why does he not condemn the Zios who control Hollywood, the political parties, and TV? Aren't they the leading cause of the decline? I guess Rod does not want to be kicked off TV or, God forbid, be called antisemetic. Yep, the fearless man of God is too gutless for that.

You shall hear of wars and rumors of wars...

Well guess what? In the last 60 years death from warfare is WAY down. It's at the lowest point in history. Read a history book and get things in perspective.

"[T]he world is heading towards a catastrophic end, God or no God."

My father passionately believed this and looked forward to helping the catastrophe along. He couldn't wait to see blood running as deep as the horses' bridles as he fought heroically side by side with Herbert Armstrong and Jesus Christ in Armageddon. He had the idea he would probably be a major general or something even though he had never gained military experience. He was 4-F.

When his own personal end came, and it was not catastrophic. He just guttered out slowly and fitfully. His mind died a little at a time. For a couple of years after it was completely gone, his body lay flat of its back (occasionally turned and cleaned up by nursing home personnel) and then followed quietly.

HWA also failed to make it all the way to Armageddon, of course. I'm betting that when Rod Meredith sees the end of days, something similarly mundane will happen. The scene will look nothing at all like the imminent cataclysm he has so zealously been prophesying all these years.

Movies today are too violent. Go read your bible instead. Oh, wait...

Man, there was that scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when they had the Nazi's flesh melt in god's righteous wrath. Good stuff. This blood running up to the horse's bridles is more perfect Hollywood fodder which has yet to be capitalized upon. Nothing like a few holy scriptures to bring out one's righteous bloodlust--or make millions at the box office! Too bad it's not good for much else.
