The rituals, o...Thanks Mish-Mash and Retired Prof.

The rituals, observances, and other things that create deep rifts of "otherness" between the followers of a religion and everyone else, are all done exclusively to please the associated deity. Beyond that, they don't have much practical purpose for the devout believer.

But if I'm not eligible for whatever reason, or I haven't been worshiping the true deity, or he isn't paying attention, or he doesn't exist (pick the one that appeals to you) then it is vanity to try to please him.

But when it comes to the simple wisdom that admonishes charity and fosters community, this has great practical value, deities notwithstanding.

By the time you're done with the vanity of the jots and tittles, which always takes precedence over the practical aspects in any religion, who has much resources left for his fellow man?Andrewnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-226103369043606765.post-54138508204679442492012-02-12T21:10:03.917-08:002012-02-12T21:10:03.917-08:00And speaking of saying the same old stuff over and...And speaking of saying the same old stuff over and over, let's all keep reiterating the principle that Andrew and Mish-Mash articulate here: it's better to be good than to be godly. In fact, a person who wants to be godly can forget the ritual and the mumbo-jumbo and just be good. Since a lot of would-be Christians need scriptural authority for such statements, and since as Andrew points out, "there is plenty of wisdom in the bible," quote them some of it. Matthew 25:40, for example:

"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."Retired Profnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-226103369043606765.post-18301175512102561912012-02-12T08:48:51.575-08:002012-02-12T08:48:51.575-08:00Andrew,

Why does mankind do that to itself with all this complication. Why can't a relationship with God be simple. I'm disappointed too. I wish God would have made many things clearer. There is too much confusion as to what God wants to please Him. I guess the best we can do is like you said, be good, live life and hope for the best if there is an afterlife.Mish-Mashnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-226103369043606765.post-61420534127734266872012-02-12T07:42:58.554-08:002012-02-12T07:42:58.554-08:00I agree, Homer.
