Did Jesus understand its meaning? In Luke 7 Jesus said the centurion had the greatest faith; how can "greatest faith" and "abomination" exist in the same person? Those soldiers wore skirts and they certainly weren't Scottish kilts. Modern Greek men wear frillier skirts than the Scots, except for
the vivid colors---so do Egyptian Dervishes. Deut 22:5 cannot be accorded greater emphasis than its context---mixed fabric garments are also banned. I feel safe interpreting it as forbidding opposite sex impersonation. But pants are not "male"---they are "equestrian." It took 1,000s of years to get men out of skirts/robes into pants, because the horse was essential for transportation and land warfare. It took four (4) years to get women into pants---World War 2 factory work ALONE is what women in pants today may be attributed to. Deut 22:5 is a sanitary law---exchanging garments could transmit illness because garments were seldom washed as today. A man's robe might be soiled by diarrhea, and if worn by a woman who got a scratch, illness could be transmitted---likewise with female menstruation. The garments were essentially the same---the prohibition was only against exchanging them! God gave men facial hair to be differentiated from women! Social forces (the horse) put men into pants, while much later, wartime factory work finally put women into pants. I caution readers to not hold any drivel notion that a Scottish kilt is the "only skirt men can wear." Your verse to back it up is---where? You are accustomed to that exact style, does not equate to other types are "wrong." Rome ran men in pants out of Rome in AD393 by order of Theodosius I as political subversives because 15 years earlier, Rome suffered a major defeat at the hands of trousered cavalrymen at Adrianople. Greek men today wear a skirt very different from a kilt and God never ordained "men can wear a skirt only if it's a kilt." If Deut 22:5 was banning pants on women, this is so important! There would be a prophecy in Revelation that in the last times, most women would be damned due to wearing "that which pertaineth unto a man." No such verse. And men are being denied choices for no reason. Christian parents in America---who were bitterly opposed to any pants on women---raised male children in dresses and skirts till age 6, until World War I when the smallest males also became trouserized. Believing "God is a pair of pants" or "God is a suit and tie" is idolatry.
Charlesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-226103369043606765.post-15032239978929843612013-06-10T17:13:57.939-07:002013-06-10T17:13:57.939-07:00Thank god for thiel. As far as I know, the Burmese male traditional clothing with their 135 ethnic groups longyi skirts. Here in the Philippines, Moslem males in the south also wear malong skirts which we also use conveniently when we come out of shower room. Woe to more half of male population of the world for having skirts as a male traditional attire.
