Leaving one cult and joining another. From Armstrongism into NXIVM

A reader posted a link to the following article in one of the comments on another thread. It is a story from Rolling Stone Magazine about why people leave one cult and how they can be easily be attracted to another cult.

Teah Banks was born into an evangelical Christian sect called the Radio Church of God. Founded in the 1930s by an advertising sales representative turned minister, the insular group promoted an ultra-fundamentalist reading of the Old Testament, eschewing divorce, premarital sex and even wearing makeup. “It was a super closed religion,” Banks, now 42, remembers. “We had pictures of the leader in our home. We worshipped him like he was a god.”

Although Banks started having questions about the group, she attended services until her 20s, when she was expelled from the organization. In 2004, she and her then-boyfriend, a filmmaker named Mark Vicente (best known for the documentary What the Bleep Do We Know?), were approached by two women who wanted Vicente to make films for their organization, NXIVM, which taught a curriculum called the Executive Success Program, or ESP. The two women (one of whom was NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman) raved about their leader, a mathematician, scientist, judo champion and concert-level pianist who had patented a unique method of hacking the human brain. The man’s name, the women said, was Keith Raniere.

Banks and Vicente’s interest was piqued, and they agreed to join the women for lunch; when Salzman successfully used ESP methods to “cure” Banks of her lifelong lactose intolerance, she was even more intrigued. “I’m just like, wow, this is amazing. This woman is amazing,” she says. “And I said, ‘Nancy, I want to be one of your people.'” Blown away by the women and by ESP in general, Banks encouraged Vicente to take a NXIVM intensive; eventually, he bought an apartment in New York to be closer to group headquarters in Albany. She was involved with the group until 2005, when the two broke up, though she continued taking courses remotely for years afterward. Vicente, who eventually became a member of the NXIVM executive board, was involved with the group until 2017.

At the time she joined NXIVM, Banks had just left one large organization with an enigmatic leader at the helm. Vicente, too, had also just extricated himself from a similarly insular fringe spiritual organization: the Ramtha School of Enlightenment, a group led by a New Age figure named JZ Knight, who claimed to be channeling a 35,000-year-old warrior deity named Ramtha. But even though they were both disillusioned with spiritual organizations, NXIVM struck them as different. “The first day you’re there, they’re like, ‘We’re not a cult. Cult is a bad word. It is used loosely,'” Banks said. “‘[We’re] a success school. We’re helping you raise your ethics.'”

At this point, everyone knows the rest of the story: in March 2018, Raniere and five of his NXIVM cohorts, including Salzman, were arrested on such charges as sex trafficking, racketeering and conspiracy to commit forced labor. Raniere is currently standing trial in Brooklyn, where his former supporters (including Vicente) have testified that he, among other things, imprisoned a woman for nearly two years, convinced his followers that he controlled technology and the weather, and ran DOS, a secret all-female organization of “slaves” who were branded with his initials and told to have sex with him.

The general view in the media — and among former followers like Banks and Vicente, who declined to comment, presumably due to his involvement in the case against Raniere — is that NXIVM operated not as a self-improvement “school,” but as a cult run by Raniere, who used threats and coercion to keep his followers in line. The revelations came as a shock to Banks, now a makeup artist and YouTuber based in Oregon, who had fallen out with the community after her 2006 breakup with Vicente but had kept in touch with many members and taken classes for years afterwards. She even recorded an ASMR video about her time in NXIVM, speaking at length about her feelings of guilt over her involvement. “I truly thought that this group had answers, and isn’t that why we join any group? [Because] they have answers there that we don’t have inside ourselves,” she says in the video. How People Leave One Cult — and End Up in Another: As the NXIVM case shows, “cult-hopping” is more common than you think

Here is the video mentioned above. She apparently is a practitioner of ASMR (Autonomous sensory meridian response) which I find creepy as hell and also irritating to listen to due to the "'s's" and "sh's" that hit her microphone when she speaks. That alone destroyed the "calming" effect" she is supposedly getting across. I could only listen to a few minutes but others find her story to be fascinating.

Low Level COG Prophet Claims He Has Integrity And That People Need To Humble Themselves to Follow Him

In his endless quest to try and legitimize himself in the eyes of his African followers, our favorite Petulant Prophet of Possiblys and Great White Bwana to Africa, Bob Thiel, claims he has the integrity to be leading a rebellious splinter group of the Living Church of God.

The end time Christians. Notice what Jesus stated and something the Apostle Peter wrote:

19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. (John 15:19, NKJV)

9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. (1 Peter 2:9-10, KJV)

This is a peculiar people. These are people who the world does not desire. These are Philadelphian Christians.

How do we know that Zephaniah 2:1-3 is related to Christians?

Because the decree is for the end time and because of what else God inspired Zephaniah to write:

3 Seek the Lord, all you meek of the earth, Who have upheld His justice. Seek righteousness, seek humility. (Zephaniah 2:3a)

The above is a reference to Christians as they are to be the “meek of the earth” (Matthew 5:5) and to Philadelphians who “have upheld His justice. Seek righteousness, seek humility.” These are Philadelphian Christians who understand that church leaders need to have integrity and are willing to be humble enough to accept the authority of a church led by a low-level prophet in the absence of a clear apostle (cf. 1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 4:11-15). They are humble enough to not think that they should remain ‘independent,’ as many who once were part of the old Worldwide Church of God, during this Laodicean time, have done.

Apparently, all true followers of God must humble themselves and kneel at Bwana Bob's feet and acknowledge him as the true leader in the church right now. After all, he is a low-level prophet and that qualifies him. Then to insult COG members who do not feel inclined to follow him and remain independent, he says they are not humble enough to accept his prophethood status.

For they are the only ones who will actually ‘gather together’ as they should.
Why?
Because it is they who will lead the final phase of the work and it is only to the Philadelphians that Jesus promises to protect from the coming hour of trial, also referred to as the Great Tribulation and the Day of the Lord:

Once again, our favorite Petulant Prophet of the church says all COG members are too dumb to know when the crap is hitting the fan and will not be allowed to join up with his group in Petra or wherever he next dreams they are all going.

Who is the only Church of God in the 21st century to teach all of this?

The [improperly named] Continuing Church of God.

If you are not in Bwana Bob's personality cult then you will not be able to flee.

If you are not with the group that is leading the final phase of the workwill you not be able to flee if you wait until the last moment? While that may be remotely possible for some, remember that God inspired Zephaniah to admonish God’s people to ‘gather together…before the decree is issued.’

Dreamy prophets are the way to go now in the Church of God.  No other COG has such a fantastic dreamweaver than the improperly named "continuing" Church of God does. that alone should make every single one of us join his group. But, woe be tot eh scoffers and the doubters!  How dare you!

Most will discount this and many will scoff. Most COGs do not have anyone considered to be a prophet, and in those other than CCOG who claim to have prophets, those prophets have been proven to be false. But the Bible says that there will be prophets in the last days and that God does communicate with them in dreams.

All Church of God groups currently in action today are nothing more than useless bumbling minuscule groups that run to and fro looking for a real prophet to lead them. The COG has never had a man more equipped to be a prophet than the one who is completely without error, which currently is Bwana Bob.

We in the Continuing Church of God “have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19, KJV).”

Whip out those checkbooks and get on your knees and humbly repent before God for failing to acknowledge the ONE TRUE MAN that God has sent to lead the church to the place of safety.

Living Church of God's 'Brotherly Love'

LCG's Doug Winnail posted a typical COG doublespeak post the other day:

Real Philadelphia Christians:  The book of Revelation describes Philadelphia Christians as having a strong desire to carry out the mission that Jesus Christ gave to His Church.  According to the Scriptures, that mission involved preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God to this world and especially to the Israelite nations (Mark 1:14-15; Matthew 10:1-7), warning the world about the difficult times that will arise at the end of the age (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) and preparing a people to reign with Jesus Christ in the coming government of God (Luke 1:17).  However, as the name “Philadelphia” means “brotherly love,” true Philadelphians will also strive to follow Jesus’ admonition to “love one another” (John 15:17).  They understand that showing unselfish, outgoing concern for others (versus sitting in judgment of others) is one of the distinguishing marks of a real Philadelphia Christian (John 13:34-35).  The capacity to show real love to others is also one of the most important fruits that indicate that we have and are using God’s Spirit (1 Corinthians 13; Galatians 5:22-25).  Let’s all look for ways to show “brotherly love” to others.  Douglas S. Winnail

Isn't it wonderful to know that LCG and Rod Meredith are the epitome of "brotherly love!"  Rod Meredith is well known on how the "love" gushes forth from his godly persona.

We got to see that love in action when he stood on the stage in Tuscon Arizona and blatantly lied about Leona McNair in front of 800+ ministers and wives.

We got to see Meredith's "brotherly love" in action when he tried to force long time ministers out of the Auditorium during the receivership, then stood on the stage and lied again when he accused them of undermining the church.

Various ministers have felt the wrath of Rod's "brotherly love" when he would start screaming at them and then kick them out of the church because the would not put up with his power hungry rantings.

Even Herbert Armstrong called Meredith on the carpet for his unchristian "brotherly love" towards ministers and members in his March 14, 1980 letter.

We got to see Rod's "brotherly love" in action as he was letting the WCG defend him court against the lawsuit Leona McNair brought against him, all the while planning on exiting the church afterwards and start up a new splinter group.

We got to see Meredith's "brotherly love" in action when Global Church of God decided to kick him out.  He then  jumped ship starting a new splinter group (LCG) all the while leaving the debt he accrued with the GCG folk.  Many GCG people had given hundreds of thousands of dollars to start Rod in his new church when Global formed which he left high and dry when he started LCG.

We got to see Meredith's "brotherly love" in action when he caused Raymond and Eve McNair  to grovel on their knees "with trembling lips" begging Rod's forgiveness.

We got to see Rod's "brotherly love" in action when Terry Ratzman went on a killing spree in an LCG church service killing and wounding LCG members, all because of the weird hate filled rantings of Rod Meredith that Ratzman had been subjected to in sermons.

We have seen Meredith's "brotherly love" spelled out in print towards gay people in the church who had to sit through endless spitting and blathering in class and in this article from the 1961 Plain Truth.

Rod's ministry and life is one of gracelessness, vengeance and power hungry control.   Yes, we have all seen Rod's brotherly love in action and it has left us all wanting. No one wants or needs the kind of 'brotherly love' that Rod Meredith or LCG has to offer.  Rod's graceless, legalistic cult has nothing to offer a hurting world.
