Debunking the PCG: America and Great Britain in Biblical Prophecy

America and Great Britain in Biblical Prophecy

On Tuesday, August 08, 2006, The Trumpet.com republished an article by Ryan Malone and Stephen Hill titled “The End of the Free World,” an article in which the writers describe the role the United States and Great Britain will play in the events of the last days. They wrote:

One of the most astounding secrets of the Bible—that the United States and Britain are two of the most prominent nations mentioned in prophecy—may initially appear startling, or even preposterous, to some of our readers.

The reason “the United States and Britain are two of the most prominent nations mentioned in prophecy” is because Britain, the nations of the British Commonwealth, and the United States of America are the remnant of Ephraim and Manasseh, two of the lost ten tribes of Israel.

Malone and Hill wrote:

Before we can understand the prophecies pertaining to the United States and Britain, an understanding of the identity of these countries in the Bible is essential. The abundant material blessings eventually to be bestowed on the U.S. and the British Commonwealth of nations were initially conveyed to the biblical patriarch Abraham because of his obedience (Gen. 22:16-18). He then passed them on to his son Isaac, who later did the same with his son Jacob. In due time, Jacob conferred this birthright promise to his son Joseph’s sons—Manasseh and Ephraim.

This is the reason, according to the two writers, that Old Testament prophets like Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Isaiah and Hosea provided specific detail about what is to happen to the United States and Britain.

The view advocated in this article is called “British-Israelism.” British-Israelism is the view that teaches that Great Britain and the United States are the remnant of the ten lost tribes of Israel. Thus, those who have adopted this view believe that the United States and Great Britain are God’s Chosen People.

The advocates of British-Israelism believe that biblical prophecies about the future of Israel and Judah are in reality prophecies about the destiny of America and Great Britain.

The concept of the ten lost tribes of Israel came into existence after the exile of the Northern Kingdom of Israel by Assyria. In 722 B.C., after the death of Shalmanassar V, King of Assyria, Sargon II finished the conquest of Israel. The capital of the Northern Kingdom, Samaria was conquered and thousands of people were deported to other parts of the Assyrian Empire.

The advocates of British-Israelism believe that the people of Israel who went into exile eventually migrated from their places of exile into the British Isles. These refugees eventually dispersed to America and Canada, thus establishing an Israelite presence in the Anglo-Saxon world.

Among the evidence given by the advocates of this view is that the word “Saxons” is a corruption of the expression “Isaac’s sons.” The advocates of this view also say that the word “British” is formed by the Hebrew word brit which means “covenant” and the word ish which means “man.” Thus, the word “British” means “covenant man.”

According to British-Israelism, America and Great Britain are heirs of God’s promises to Israel and because of that, many biblical prophecies have been fulfilled in the lives of these two nations. America and Great Britain have been blessed with prosperity and material wealth and have become two great superpowers.

But because of disobedience to God’s law, America and Great Britain have begun experiencing God’s judgment:

Also prophesied for America and Britain was the gain of strategic sea gates (Gen. 22:17) only to be lost as these nations reaped curses for disobedience. This too has already largely occurred. The 20th century saw Britain’s and America’s loss of sea gates such as the Suez Canal, Malta, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Falkland Islands, the Cape of Good Hope and the Panama Canal. Gibraltar will undoubtedly be added to the list soon, as Britain is being bullied by the European Union to relinquish control of this strategic territory, under threat of horrendous fines.

The views proposed by British-Israelism find no support in the Bible even though its proponents use many biblical passages to prove their point. A careful study of the Old Testament will show that the lost tribes of the Northern Kingdom were never lost.

When Sargon II deported the population of the Northern Kingdom, he deported only a portion of the population. According to the Sargon Inscription, when Sargon captured Samaria he took captive 27,290 people, but many more were left behind.

During the reforms of Josiah in 622 B.C., Josiah made an attempt to extend his religious reforms to the remnant of the Northern Tribes. According to 2 Chronicles 34:8-9, Josiah contacted Israelite people who lived in Ephraim and Manasseh:

In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, to purify the land and the temple, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the ruler of the city, with Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the temple of the LORD his God. They went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the temple of God, which the Levites who were the doorkeepers had collected from the people of Manasseh, Ephraim and the entire remnant of Israel and from all the people of Judah and Benjamin and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

The reference in Chronicles to the people of Manasseh, Ephraim, and the entire remnant of Israel may reflect the Chronicler’s view that all Israel was still a viable option. However, this reference clearly indicates that during the time of the Chronicler, the remnant of the tribes of Israel were not lost.

As for America and Great Britain, they are not found in the oracles of Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Isaiah and Hosea. Only through the process of eisegesis, reading one’s view into the biblical text, is America and Great Britain found in the Old Testament.

British-Israelism is not supported by the teachings of the Bible. The interpretation of biblical prophecies showing that America and Great Britain are the lost tribes of Israel is false.

Christians who are interested in prophecy and the events related to the last days must be careful not to be deceived by false teachings. Believers should always be aware of the words of Christ, that in the last days “there will be false prophets, and they will give signs and wonders in the hope of turning even the saints from the true way” (Mark 13:22).

  1. "Every indication is that the U.S. will never fight again." - An article in The Trumpet, 2007

Looking at the news right now, that seems to be wrong.

So should I believe other things PCG claims?

    1. Good investigative reporting, R.L. From The Trumpet's Joel Hilliker in Jan. 2007:

"Once disentangling itself from Iraq, will the U.S. recommit troops in order to solve other conflicts by military means? Not outside the confines of UN or NATO action, surely.
Will it go after Iran, North Korea, or somewhere else? No, no and no."

Mr. Hilliker in 2007 had no idea that in his near future, Mr. Trump would indeed have enough sense to "recommit" & "solve other conflicts by military means" for sure "outside the confines of UN or NATO action" when the time calls for it.

We've actually already went after N. Korea with our secret weapon : 🏀 Dennis Rodman! Mr. Trump played hopscotch there too with Kim at the demarcation line. The US is full of surprises isn't it, Mr. Joel Hilliker & "prophetic" PCG?

PCG & Bob can now go "update" their lame occasional take on a few "prophecies".

  2. Can you hear the whispers amongst the practicing COGlodytes who happen to read this? "Who is this Baptist professor? How can he know the truth? He doesn't even keep the sabbath!"

It's going to be interesting watching the latter day followers of Herbert W. Armstrong as they attempt to mold and bend and adapt the daily news and the HWA prophecy model to make them match. There are certain similarities, granted. RFK Jr. has the disease epidemic situation all set up. He's got measles revived and going pretty good. Like the disease of alcoholism, global climate change keeps on progressing even if you ignore it. (It's right in there, in the Bookof Revelation.) Bombs and missiles don't help. National debt will collapse the economy sooner rather than later if it is not dealt with quickly.

However, the USA appears to be the new Germany, and Latinos are the new Jews! The world sits silently by as wars are started based on the interests embodied in our new nationalism, the pride of our power quite intact. The new centurions, the Evangelicals, are in control and appear to have replaced HWA's Catholics as beast and boogeyman. No word on enforcing Sunday keeping yet. The all important ultimate sign of the end, the building of the Temple in Jerusalem, has become ill and was excused from the party to go home early to convalesce. Even the Evangelicals recognize that event as the quintessential sign, and their farmers have been working overtime attempting to breed the perfect red heifer. Drat those pesky white hairs, anyway!

Where are the chosen messengers? No visibility in any news cycle of an ACOG! No street buzz. No audible warning! Members are not being rounded up and questioned, although the FBI knows about everybody. Word is, these people pretty much support the administration, and are therefore considered to be patriotic to "our country" .

So, all you people out there in radio land can rest easy. This ain't the one! Current events bear a few resemblances to the HWAcaca, but in other key areas, what we see unfolding is the diametric opposite of all that we were taught, and should come as a total shock to Armstrongites!

  4. The PCG cannot even prove they are using the right books of the Bible and they have probably never even tried to prove it. They seem to take it for granted like nearly everyone else does.

    ******
Actually no! The abundant material blessings were initially conveyed to the biblical patriarch Abraham long before his obedience mentioned in Gen. 22!

Genesis 12:1 "Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."

Isn't that the gospel (something to benefit all families/nations) preached to Abram? How did the LORD know about that gospel?

"And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, [saying], In thee shall all nations be blessed." Galatians 3:8

What did Abram, age 75, accomplish earlier in his life to impress the LORD? Nothing.

The LORD, The God, Jesus' God, Jesus' Father is very smart. Abram, or Abraham, does not need to be put on some pedestal. God is the Doer, and He is working out His Plan to save humanity, and subsequently destroy those which were made to be taken and destroyed (2 Peter 2:12).

The good work(s), which were performed in Abraham were accomplished by God. How do we know that?

"Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world." Acts 15:18; Heb 4:3

"He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD [is] gracious and full of compassion." Psalm 111:4

Such works were performed in the lives of Abram, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses,...King David, King Jehu (e.g. I Kings 19:16-17) and other such characters as Job, Jonah, Nebuchadnezzar, ...prophets, apostles...etc.

A time is coming when all families/nations shall be blessed, but will it be because Abraham displayed some obedience, or will it be because God (I Cor 8:6), by the power of His Spirit (Zech 4:6), through His Son had been working our His will and purpose in our lives (Isaiah 64:8)?

And where, specifically, do the U.S. and the British Commonwealth of nations, fit among the works of God?

They did have a lot of wonderful blessings, but is it possible that God has far greater blessings in store for all families/nations at a yet future time, which will surpass anything the US/BC have ever had?

    Time will tell...

  6. Whether or not British-Israelism (BI) is a spiritual problem depends on how it is incorporated into spiritual life. If it is an anthropology it has one set of problems. If it is theology it has another set. My guess is that there have been Christians who have believed odd-ball ideas over the last two millennia and they yet remained Christians. There were others who believed odd-ball ideas and this bespoke their lack of Christian belief. BI exists within a context and its effect must be understood in that context.

What if someone who is otherwise a sound Christian believes that there is a Bigfoot. Maybe they even saw a track somewhere in the woods. Maybe they have a plausible explanation based on the survival of some kind of pre-adamic man. Is that wrong? It might be an educational issue but it is not a spiritual issue. It is just an odd anthropological belief.

But what if the Christian came to believe that Bigfoot was a special messenger from God and somehow would mediate special revelation from God to men? What if the Christian found branches disturbed in the woods and interpreted these as messages through Bigfoot? Bigfoot then becomes a theological issue. It leads to spiritual error.

You might conclude that this is an observation that does not need to be made – that BI is always theological. But I go through this analysis because it is important to recognize what makes BI wrong. It isn’t the anthropology. It’s the theology. If you want to believe you are descended from Jacob when there is no credible evidence that you are, we might be concerned about your educability. Otherwise, knock yourself out.

It is when you gratuitously impart a bunch of spiritual meaning to BI that you tread on thin ice. Especially, if the spiritual meaning you impart to it makes you think that because you are an “Israelite” according to the flesh that you occupy a favored place in the sight of God. James wrote, “But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.” Paul wrote that the middle wall of separation between Jews and Gentiles had been demolished. In spite of these scriptures, a WCG evangelist back in the old days went from city to city preaching that resurrected Israelites in the Kingdom of God would rule over resurrected Gentiles.

Christians in Asia Minor back in the second century might have believed all kinds of odd things about the world. Not a problem. They can still be Christians. Science was not well-developed in those days. But if they take the oddity and transform it into theology, they miss the mark. The same with BI.
