That Dog Won't Hunt!

That Dog Won't Hunt!

In the comments which followed my post The Linchpin of Armstrongism, some of the commentators brought up the fact that I am a celibate homosexual. For my regular readers, it will come as no surprise that I have always regarded my celibacy and faithfulness to God and my family as a tremendous source of moral authority for the things that I write about spiritual/theological issues. Hence, as part of my response to this mention, I wrote: "Perhaps, if Herbert Armstrong hadn't been such a narcissist and pervert, his teachings would carry more moral authority."

This statement provoked the following anonymous comment: "Earlier above, you excoriated HWA again for being such a 'narcissist and pervert' (doubting his conversion and believing the allegations against him, while calling yourself a redeemed one), and that if it hadn't been for that, 'his teachings would have carried more moral authority.' I detect a spirit of bitterness here. You don't know that Christ had him teach the truth for over 50 years, that many watched the WT and read the PT, and that attendance reached 140,000 until the apostasy set in? (to which you give assent if you disparage the law) His teachings did carry high moral authority from the Lord and led to many conversions (to which you have attested). Even after the trials and turmoil of the 70s, after all the allegations that he faced, he survived it until '86 when the church was still flourishing. If it was a work of men (which it began to be under the JWT's watch '93-'95), it would have come to nothing."

I completely understand where this person is coming from - once upon a time, I thought the same way. Like many of the folks who read this blog, I swallowed what Herbie was selling hook, line, and sinker! I believed that God had revealed THE TRUTH to that old guy, and that God had opened my mind to believe what He had revealed to Herbie. Later, however, I came to see that all that glitters is not gold - that there were a lot of holes in Herbie's "truth." I discovered that Herbie's dissertations on history and science were full of inaccuracies. Moreover, I eventually realized that many of his "prooftexts" had been taken out of context, and that his knowledge of the Bible and Christian theology was very superficial.

Finally, after an extensive reevaluation of Herbie's teachings, I came to understand that God had NOT worked through Mr. Armstrong. Indeed, it became very clear to me that he had twisted history, science, Scripture, research, and the thought process itself. Armstrong claimed that he had figured out God's plans, recovered First Century Christianity, and found the key to understanding prophecy. Sadly, it turned out that he didn't understand very much at all!

Then, I began learning more about the man himself - his character - his very real and glaring weaknesses and failures as a person. I talked to people who knew him personally and had worked with him. I reread his autobiography, and I saw things there that I had overlooked or ignored the first time I had read it. Herbert had written that his sister-in-law had been "indoctrinated" with the theory of evolution; and that she had called him "ignorant," because he had expressed his belief in Divine creation. The account continued:

"That accusation came hot on the heels of this Sabbath challenge from my wife. Of course, Hertha was only about 19, and had had but her freshman year in college. She was yet immature enough to be a bit oversold on what had been presented to her as a mark of intellectual distinction. Nevertheless, her manner was cutting, and a bit sarcastic, and 1 accepted it as a challenge. 'Hertha,' 1 responded, 'I am just starting a study of the Bible. I intend to include in this research a thorough study of the Biblical account of creation. Since it is admittedly one of the two - evolution or special creation - I will include an in-depth study of evolution. I feel sure that a thorough study into both sides will show that it is you who are ignorant, and that you merely studied one side of a two-sided question in freshman biology, and accepted what was funnelled into your mind without question. And if and when I do, I'm going to make you EAT those words!'" (spelling and punctuation were Herbert's)

Allow me to point out the things which I hadn't noticed the first time I read this passage. Notice that Herbie was responding to challenges from his wife and sister-in-law. Notice also that he disparaged his sister-in-law's college coursework (Mr. Armstrong did NOT have a college background of his own). He then proceeded to announce that he would launch his own independent study of science and the Bible, and that the results would be definitive. Finally, he told his sister-in-law that he would make her "eat those words." It hit me like a ton of bricks. This man was a classic narcissist! He was the smartest tool in the shed, and everybody else was inferior to him in intellect! This would become even clearer as Herbie continued the account of his life.

He wrote: "Most believers in the Bible and in the existence of God have probably just grown up believing it, because they were reared in an atmosphere where it was believed. But perhaps few ever studied into it deeply enough to obtain irrefutable PROOF. Likewise, the 'educated,' who have gone on through college or university, have, in the main, been taught the theory of evolution as a BELIEF. They have accepted it, in all probability, without having given any serious or thorough study of the Biblical claims." No one had studied the subject like Herbert Armstrong intended to study it! Look out "Darwin, Haeckel, Spencer, Huxley, and Vogt, Herbie was about to give those so-called intellectual giants the what for!

Even though Armstrong admitted that he was self-educated, he was going to challenge scientists and biblical scholars alike. He was going to get to the "truth" that no one else had been able to discover or discern! Even though he didn't have any training in research techniques and methods, he would ferret out the answers that had alluded all others! He continued:

I began this intensified study by obtaining everything I could find in the way of books, pamphlets and other literature both for and against what was often called 'the Jewish Sabbath.' I wanted, not only everything I could lay hands on, on the case for Sunday, and against the 7th-day Sabbath. I wanted, also, the arguments or proponents for it, which I hoped to be able honestly to refute. At the same time, I found, in the Portland Public Library, many scientific works either directly on evolution, or teaching in textbooks on biology, paleontology, and geology. Also I found books by scientists and doctors of philosophy puncturing many holes in the evolutionary hypothesis. Strangely, even the critics of evolution, being themselves scientific men, paradoxically accepted the very theory they so ably refuted."

Apparently, no one ever informed Mr. Armstrong that all sources are NOT created equal, or that some arguments are superior to others. It also appears that no one ever told him that a university library would be better for this kind of research than a public library - that he would have access to more of the latest thinking on any given subject in a university library than he would in a local public library. In Herbert's mind, his research was the most intensive that had ever been undertaken. His study would settle these questions for all time!

In addition to these personal revelations about Armstrong's narcissism and intellectual prowess, it was about this time that my father informed me about a conversation that he had had with Garner Ted Armstrong - before the masseuse and his messy exit from the Church of God International. To my shock and horror, GTA had confirmed to him that the rumors were true about his father's incestuous relationship with his sister! Prior to this, I had always dismissed the rumors and refused to look into the matter. I had assumed it was just sour grapes and character assassination. After my dad's bombshell, however, I became aware of the fact that there was a substantial body of circumstantial evidence which supported the accusation. So, Herbert Armstrong was a narcissist and an incestuous pedophile! He had also clearly divorced his second wife - it was a matter of public record. He wasn't even qualified to be a minister of Jesus Christ - let alone to be called an "apostle"!

In light of everything I had learned, it became clear to me that God had NEVER used Herbert Armstrong to reveal anything to anybody! "What about the success of the Worldwide Church?" my friends who were still entangled in Herbie's web of lies demanded. After all, Herbie had always pointed to PT circulation numbers, radio and television stations broadcasting The World Tomorrow, Ambassador College, and Ambassador IC Foundation, and income as proof that God was blessing his leadership of The Work. What we were never told, however, was that the Mormon Church and the Jehovah's Witnesses had an even greater reach and impact than we did. In fact, it turns out that financial and publishing success are NOT indicators of Divine favor! Bottom line, my apologies to the commentator referenced above - that dog won't hunt!

  1. LOL! Put the gospel in the hands of a salesman or advertising exec, and of course it will become twisted, sugar-coated, manipulative, and filled with lies!

The ol' coot was pretty danged effective, wasn't he? Smoothe operator!

    1. You caught them! It’s a vast Jesuit, Masonic, trilateralist conspiracy to deceive the elect. You seem to forget this is a blog about the craziness of Armstrongism. These days the stupidity arrives fast and furious at times. I’m glad those here keep us abreast of the craziness.

  3. My favorable opinion of Herb took a nose dive when I started watching the televangelists. Herb claimed that he was revealing truth not understood for over 2000 years. Yet these evangilists gave sermons similar and often far superior to Herb and his ministers. Some of Kenneth Copeland's guest speakers were brilliant. It was one of these who brought to my attention that God communicates directly to Christians rather than exclusively through ministers.
Herb was a pathological liar. The Bible's "prove all things" had people like Herb in mind.

  4. This is what God says of false prophets.....Jer 23:21  I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.
Jer 23:22  ((But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words)), then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings...  If Mr Armstrong was a false prophet, I think he also caused God's people to hear God's words, which still had a good outcome. As Jesus said....Luk 9:49  And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
Luk 9:50  And Jesus said unto him, " Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us" . You fear to be andgry with God, so you take out your anger on msn. But it is God who inspired His prophet to write. Lev_20:13  If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. God understands passive agressive and may still count it as rebellion.

    1. "Mr Armstrong...still had a good outcome."

5.47, many people who listened to HWA's radio broadcasts had a good opinion of him. But they only saw the Pharisaic veneer. What they didn't see was the galley-slave members who were rowing his boat. It always gets me that there are people who refuse to buy eggs produced by caged chickens because of the animal cruelty involved. But these same people think nothing of consuming goods or services produced by oppressed workers.

  5. Miller Jones:

You made a clear and cohesive argument about something that has bothered me for years. The question is “Why should we ever think that HWA’s “in-depth” studies were ever definitive?” It is clear that he believed that if he studied something he would arrive at the unassailably correct conclusion. It is as if he is the undisputed arbiter of all of human history and civilization. Why did any of us believe this?

Most of us were ensnared by this approach because we assumed that he was inspired by God. We knew he did not have the educational credentials to pontificate on the many topics he addressed with aplomb. But because there was a modestly successful church infrastructure accompanied by great vision, we believed that we were on to something significant. Those people who originally supported him were cut from a different cloth. There were no mesmerizing church operations back then. I cannot speak for how they drew their conclusions back in the Forties.

There is a watershed difference between vision and delusion just as there is a difference between servant leadership and simple-minded authoritarianism. I think we all needed to be more discriminating. That requires exposure to a broader range of ideas. One man with zealous intent and the goal of figuring it all out but with limited education sitting in isolation in a public library reading material he has not been prepared to understand is not going to solve the world’s problems. He is one of the world’s problems.

[Jer 23:9, 21-22 NLT] 9 My heart is broken because of the false prophets, and my bones tremble. I stagger like a drunkard, like someone overcome by wine, because of the holy words the LORD has spoken against them. ... 21 "I have not sent these prophets, yet they run around claiming to speak for me. I have given them no message, yet they go on prophesying. 22 If they had stood before me and listened to me, they would have spoken my words, and they would have turned my people from their evil ways and deeds.

read verse 22 - it is saying if they had been true to God He would have given them the right prophetical words.

It is not saying false prophets somehow did some good. One ought not bend these words any other way as if to justify Armstrong's falsities.
Unfortunately Armstrong twisted God's words, the gospel included and lots of things not merely really stupid prophecies.
    Best not to twist scriptures.

    1. But if they had stood in my counsel, God said "If". So the statement said If Mr Armstrong was a false prophet. I do not believe he was. He was a man, and he made mistakes like we all do. It is only God that has the right to judge, to condemn, and whatever condemnation we judge for others, God says we will receive. Take the case of Solomon. A man called of God to do a task, but In His latter life, He turned from God. But God did not get the hump and cast out all that He had inspired him to write before, and gave us Proverbs etc. The bitteness many on this platform feel towards this long dead man, who was only able to convince maybe one hundred and forty thousand people or more about God's Holy days, is incredible. They are more obsessed with this man than those who attend surviving COGs....Mat 6:12  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. ..Mat 6:15  But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Maybe you do not believe you have any trespasses that need God's forgiveness.

    2. It is only God that has the right to judge, to condemn, and whatever condemnation we judge for others, God says we will receive

If you wish to be forgiving of Armstrong of course this is your right. However, It is incorrect to say only God can judge these things. There are too many verses to list in this regard - believers are told to test, challenge and prove.

I will show one verse that is pertinent:

2 Peter 3 :16: ''He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction''
verse 17: ''.Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.''

Peter says that some twist (Greek: streblousin — distort, wrench, torture) the Scriptures and this happens especially among the unstable and untaught.
And he says (in the v 17) to believers to be alert so they are not carried away by such distortions. This is really a universal responsibility placed on us all.

Many have examined Armstrong closely over the years and not only is he shown to have manipulated scriptures to create false prophecies from the very beginning, it persisted over a very long time (In his early prophecy about the automobile and Nehemiah he plainly distorted scriptures)..
He also distorted scriptures to create a gospel not to do about Christ because he wanted a prophetic future kingdom gospel. There are many other distortions as well .
Best not then be too critical of those believers who have tested Armstrong as we are required to do and they have found him seriously wanting.

  8. Anonymous 3/16 @ 10:12,
I am a sinner who depends every day I draw breath on my Savior, Jesus the Christ. Even so, I repented and accepted Jesus as my Savior, and I have received the Holy Spirit from God. That Spirit has borne fruit in my life - as it does in the lives of all those who receive it and follow its guidance. In other words, this Spirit produces tangible evidence of its presence.
I am not Mr. Armstrong's judge. That is above my pay grade. Nevertheless, I do have the ability to discern spiritual fruit (or the lack thereof) in others. I know that someone who is arrogant and self-serving is NOT displaying the fruits of God's Spirit. I know that someone who has repeatedly had sexual relations with his/her underage daughter is NOT displaying the fruits of God's Spirit! I know that someone who has repeatedly issued prophetic warnings which have failed to materialize is NOT displaying evidence of God's Spirit.
This is discernment of behavior and evaluation of evidence, NOT judgment of the individual's personal status before God! I have personally forgiven Herbert Armstrong and his associates for the wrongs done to me. I hope and pray that he repented of his sins (or will repent someday in the future). That is between him and God. For instance, the saints at Corinth should have been able to discern that the man having an affair with his father's wife should NOT have been tolerated/accepted by them.
As for Solomon, all that he did while operating under the influence of God's Spirit was good and remained. Did he repent and receive forgiveness from God? I don't know - I hope he did. I do know that God rejected his behavior that was contrary to the Holy Spirit, and there was a lot of evidence that he had strayed from God and resisted the leadership of His Spirit.

  9. Well, this is one of the most comical posts Lonnie has provided us! This NON- narcist explains to all how evil HWA was ---- from the beginning to the end. Lonnie does not mind, in fact, likes to point out his own goodness, understanding and righteousness. Now he does indeed have some very good points. Admittedly was a follower, (as was his atheist friend Dennis), of HWA, as were many of us. But for some reason, ANYTHING Herbert, (or as like many like to say, Hervert, Herbie, and other terms), should be disregarded. All should be thankful, I suppose, to have someone as 'knowledgeable' as Lonnie, Dennis, and others who hate with a viciousness of those who they used to work for, follow, and now that they are 'free', their whole purpose in life seems to be to destroy anything HWA ever taught or even suggested. Must agree that the 'government of god' thing was what destroyed that organization.
Lonnie does indeed have some very good points quite often, but his TDS type approach to where he was and now despises everything is to be pitied.

    1. Pitied? I think not. You really can't put together discussions regarding an abominably toxic system, without establishing contrasts. Good and bad, yin and yang, before and after, good karma, bad karma. Lonnie is to be admired for skillfully navigating around life's tempests, plotting a better path, and sharing what he has learned with the rest of us.

    2. Well said 2:39. Pitied is the correct word to use and describes this situation correctly. They are also to be prayed for, as the spirit of lying has taken them down a dark path of futile deceit that only ultimately harms themselves and their own standing with God Almighty.

  10. Matthew 7:15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits." - English Standard Version

  11. Some of the comments here demonstrate just how thoroughly Herbie hoodwinked them. They protect what they believe by turning a deaf ear and a blind eye to anything which contradicts his indoctrination. Reminds me of something the Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy:
For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine and accurate instruction [that challenges them with God’s truth]; but wanting to have their ears tickled [with something pleasing], they will accumulate for themselves [many] teachers [one after another, chosen] to satisfy their own desires and to support the errors they hold, and will turn their ears away from the truth and will wander off into myths and man-made fictions [and will accept the unacceptable]. - II Timothy 4:3-4, Amplified Bible

Now that YOU, along with some actual atheist, and now stand up offering to be the leader of ....... whoever. (Like many of your posts and arguments are actually good), yet you seem to set yourself up as the authority.
Just wondering when you might get over destroying 'Armstrongism' and then preach the gospel?

  12. Yes, I was hoodwinked; but the Holy Spirit led me out of that darkness. I never fought to return to that error. Instead, I have tried to contribute articles that challenge people to think and do their own research. I don't have all of the answers, and I've never claimed to have it all figured out. I'm not affiliated with ANY group. I'm not on anybody's payroll. I don't have an organization of my own and have never been interested in starting one. I am also NOT collecting tithes and offerings from anyone. The only help that I receive is from the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Moreover, if I have taught anything contrary to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, it was completely unintentional, and my posts are presented in a format where anyone and everyone has the opportunity to challenge me or my thesis. I wonder how many ACOG ministers could make such claims about their teachings????
