It is hard to believe that 25 years have passed since the World Trade Center was attacked by Islamic extremist vermin. Today, in 2026, an entire generation knows very little about that horrendous day. The entire world stopped and watched. Some in Gaza cheered and celebrated. Europeans were shocked. Commercial air travel evaporated within hours. Inbound international flights were diverted to Canadian airports, where citizens of small towns opened their homes, schools, and churches to care for thousands of stranded travelers.
The only known Church of God member working in the World Trade Center that morning was Adrienne Johnson of the United Church of God. She worked on the 37th floor of one of the towers and escaped safely with coworkers. The United Church of God issued a statement the next day confirming that all its members were accounted for and expressing horror at the loss of life.
Here on the West Coast, Pasadena shut down and the streets were empty. I remember the Ambassador College campus and the surrounding area being totally quiet. At noon I went to Circuit City to buy a portable radio with an earpiece so I could follow the news while I worked. Authorities were anticipating a possible attack on downtown Los Angeles, so much of the city effectively shut down.
Three of the four hijacked flights-American 11, United 175, and American 77-had been scheduled to fly to Los Angeles International Airport. That is why so many of the passengers were heading to Southern California, and why LAX and downtown high-rises were placed on high alert and partially evacuated that morning as a precaution.
Al-Qaeda had considered West Coast targets in earlier planning. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed originally proposed a larger operation striking landmarks on both coasts, including the Library Tower (now the U.S. Bank Tower) in downtown Los Angeles. Osama bin Laden scaled the plan back to the East Coast for September 11. A later "second-wave" plot to fly a plane into the same Los Angeles tower was discussed after 9/11 but was disrupted in 2002 before it could be carried out.
The various Armstrongite Churches of God, of course, wasted no time slotting the attacks into the prophecy charts they had been updating since the 1930s. By September 12 the United Church of God had issued a pastoral letter of genuine shock and grief, then immediately noted that all their members were safe. Other splinters (Living Church of God, Philadelphia Church of God, etc.) followed the same script: horror, prayers, then the inevitable Leviticus 26 citation. "I will even appoint terror over you... I will break the pride of your power."
According to Armstrongite mythology, America is modern Manasseh, one of the lost tribes, so of course God would use terrorists to humble the pride of His favorite (if currently very disobedient) nation. Gerald Flurry of the Philadelphia Church of God was particularly pleased; he had already declared in May 2001 that the world had entered its "last hour," and 9/11 arrived right on cue to prove he was paying attention. Sermons and articles for years afterward treated the attacks as both a divine warning and further evidence that only their particular remnant was delivering the real end-time message. They also liked to point out that the death toll "could have been much worse," which in Armstrongite theology is usually presented as God's mercy rather than, say, the fact that the hijackers only had four planes.
By this time the Worldwide Church of God had already abandoned most of Herbert Armstrong's distinctive doctrines by 2001, so the prophetic heavy lifting fell to the competing successor groups, each of which remained convinced it alone understood why the towers fell. It was an orgy of melodramatic end times malarkey from the splinters, and today, in 2026, the competing COG groups will put out articles marking this as the start of America's decline that they so vitally need and wish for. They so desperately need to be proven right.
9/11 doesn't fit in with the Armstrongist scenario at all. Why should we be harried by forces from the Middle East. It is Western Europe and notably Germany, the Assyrians, that should be leaning on us. The various Armstrongists groups are just trying to make hay from something that they didn't predict.

DeleteI woke up in mid-morning, heard and saw the news, and immediately thought Europe MUST have done it - uniting overnight (so fast it will make your head spin, some ministers might say) and launching the attack because it couldn't stand G.W. Bush.
Only LCG claimed to have indirectly "called it" - pointing to a warning article about al-Qaeda during the summer. But it was completely NOT what COG's were preaching about the "real" threat to the U.S..
P.S. There was some confusion about Ms. Johnson of UCG for a few days - whether she was dead or alive. That was frustrating for some of us..
Yes indeed Scout. There is a lot they didn’t predict and were probably gobsmacked by what has happened over the past decades. I remember hearing Raymond McNair saying to us here in NZ that the USSR must remain strong, as it was falling apart. Didn’t meet the prophetic profile of the Armstrong model. And the gulf war one and two, and trying to explain it through the writings of the ‘minor’ prophets like Obadiah etc etc. Here we are years later and the world is vastly different from what we all thought was written in stone and was the truth as we were lead to believe. Cursed is the man who trusts in man. These men and groups have been found wanting. Haven’t we all, sigh. His grace sustains us all thankfully, and we all know the Armstrong model was flawed and deeply so. Tragic advents 9/11.
DeleteIt's also the approach and persistence of the Armstrong model that is flawed. And the thing is you look back at (if you can find them) UCG, LCG, PCG magazine articles on their prophecy articles the past 25 years and it falls short of what's happening and more importantly why things are happening. So when something happens in the middle east or Asia or Europe they scramble to make it fit the Armstrong model (like the fall of the Berlin Wall). Each group of ministers/writers keep doing the same approach. Even when you had listened to any of the sermons back in the 90s from Worldwide or Global, whenever they started mentioning what would happen in the middle east or Europe and look in the current day (two decades later), you find yourself going "these guys don't what they are talking about." You have to sort of skip that part of the message or just ignore it. Looking back it's kind of embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteSurely, even the most stalwart of all the COGlodytes have to realize that the founder, and leaders of their church use a surgical steel shoehorn and lots of grease to make their applied interpretation of prophecy even remotely fit what is actually unfolding around us all! They are totally clueless and thus diminish the quality of their members' lives while punishing them with delusions of their being the actual illuminated ones, the gatekeepers, the ones assisting in navigating the end times. What a disappointment!
ReplyDeleteWe live in times when the Pope is American, our felony president is ruining America in his quest for revenge against those who attempted to hold him accountable for his ego-driven run away megalomaniacal acts, global climate change has already taken planet Earth beyond the point of no return as if it were an out of control nuclear melt down, and the Germans are actually the voice of reason and moderation. Who'd a thunk? You can deny all of these things and proclaim, "Oh, just wait!" but it does not make reality go away!
When will these poor deceived people realize that they are being exploited, manipulated, and forced to embrace a way of life which is a total exaggeration of anything contained in the pages of their Bibles, and which only exists for the benefit of their fat cat leaders who covet the reverence normally reserved for God Himself? It makes no sense at all. It is akin to insistence that pouring gasoline on a fire is the only way to put it out!
I had once thought that 9/11 would be a cause for great multitudes to come to their senses and to leave Armstrongism. Especially coupled with the double whammy of the mapping of the human genome. The ship has sunk, yet those in the water somehow believe that the sharks which are circling them are the rescue team! And the leaders wonder why their message no longer resonates with great masses of normal people! The broken Cuckoo Clock may indeed be right twice a day, but the little birdie no longer comes out and announces its presence.

Using 25th anniversary of 9/11 as an excuse to have a bitter go at COG is awful.
Sep 11 was a turning point for me in many ways. But, it definitely made me quit listening to all the COGs on their stupid prophecies. Not a one warned about Islamic terrorism in the 80s, 90s, or pre-2001. It was all Europe and especially Germany. Made me realize they had no special knowledge.

ReplyDeleteI know the splinter that I was in when the 9-11 happened, they decided to use the word “terror” in Leviticus 23 as it relates to end time “Israel”, which is classic Armstrongism. They still use that tactic till this day. They act like terrorism never happened before 9-11. It’s silly really when you think about the human atrocities that have happened to different groups around the world. Teorrism and terror attacks happen across the globe. I know one thing, it changed our country and it changed the way we travel. Stay safe everybody.
