The ACOG Identity
Long ago, the teachings of Herbert Armstrong were incorporated into the personal identities of certain individuals all over the United States and English-speaking world. I know, because I was one of them! Moreover, I believe that this explains why we continue to see a small group of Armstrong’s followers divided amongst a plethora of splinter groups whose personal identities still reflect their exposure to Armstrong’s teachings.
These folks are immune to the personal testimonies of individuals who suffered mental anguish and personal loss within Armstrong’s now defunct Worldwide Church of God. Likewise, they are immune to the many scholarly and well-researched treatises which have discredited Armstrong’s teachings/theology. Why? I believe it is because Armstrong’s teachings were integrated so deeply into their psyches that they became part of their individual identities.
Although Psychology Today admits that identity is a very complex phenomenon, there are enough generalities to shed some light on what happened to these folks. In their article on identity, we read: “Identity encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships, and values that generate one’s sense of self. This amalgamation creates a steady sense of who one is over time, even as new facets are developed and incorporated into their identity.” (Psychology Today: Identity)
Herbert Armstrong claimed to have the answers to the questions which are typical of those in search of an identity – Questions like: Who am I? Does God exist? What does God want from me? What is my purpose? Is there something beyond this present life? Can I be one of God’s people? Armstrong claimed that God had revealed the answers to those questions to him, and that a person’s acceptance of those answers meant that God was calling that individual to him. Now, for someone who is searching for answers, that is pretty heady stuff! Armstrong told these folks that if they obeyed some of the precepts of Torah (like Sabbaths, Holy Days, clean and unclean meats, tithing), that they could be part of God’s one and only “TRUE” Church – one of the obedient of God. Of course, the flip side of that was that EVERYONE ELSE was NOT part of that group!
In other words, the folks who became a part of Armstrong’s group formed friendships/relationships with the other folks who had adopted his answers. Over time, their tithing, rituals, and eating habits became habitual and were internalized as an integral part of their individual identity. Likewise, over the same period, their memories became saturated with festival attendance and the experiences associated with Holy Day observances. Hence, we can see that their personal identity became so associated with the people and experiences of the Armstrong Churches of God that many of them simply could not imagine themselves outside of that tradition! They were so integrated into that system that they became part of it. For many of these folks, Armstrong’s teachings represented who they were – heart, body, and soul!
Indeed, Herbert had even convinced many of them to stop searching for answers – to stifle their intellectual and spiritual development. “You already have the answers,” he reasoned. “Why read or consider what anyone else has said or written about these things?” Moreover, Armstrong repeatedly warned them that they could “LOSE” the “truths” which had been gifted to them, and that doing so would condemn them to the Lake of Fire! Fear, ego, and personal identity kept them committed to Armstrongism; and NOTHING or NO ONE could “steal their crowns from them!”
Thus, as someone who was forced to form a new and independent identity, I understand why some folks continue to be impermeable to any appeal to come out of the cognitive dissonance that is Armstrongism. Unfortunately, for many of these folks, it is simply too much a part of who they are – It is an integral part of their identity as a person! In short, it is very hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but it is NOT impossible! Hence, it is incumbent upon all of us to follow the advice of the Apostle James: “Remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.” (James 5:20)

ReplyDeleteGood article. Reminded me of 'The Sunk Cost Fallacy' which is also at play.
I mentioned this to them, their "identity" is taking pride that they are an Israelite. Not so much having an identity in being a christian. ACOGs are prideful.
ReplyDeletePeople are lying when they say that Armstrongite losers do not identify as Christians.
ReplyDeleteOh, they’ll give lip service of being a christian. But for 80 plus years they have written about Genesis 12:1-13 relating to them being identified as being an Israelite and their blessings. But at least Paul and Peter use the same verse to relate it to being identified with being within the Christian faith:
DeleteGalatians 3:8-9 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.
Acts 3:25-26 You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.”
What is it, that He said, Matthew 15:8 ‘These people [a]draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.
See, it's their writings and their writings are from their heart.
Like any religion, Armstongism is a cult. Group-think prevails.
ReplyDeleteWhat I've discovered over the years is that Identity evolves as we mature. It's a moving target. You take what you learn from each stage, and hopefully it makes you stronger for the next one. For many years, I derived my identity from my bike. Basically, I worked only to have money to plow back into the bikes. My friends, girlfriends (tough girls), beer drinking, Southern Rock music culture, and spare time all revolved around building and riding the bikes. I never got a patch, but did hang around with some of the bros in the clubs, and had some invites. The thing about the outlaw clubs is that they own your ass worse than Armstrong does, they too make you do things that you don't want to, and to me motorcycles were always a personal expression of freedom. Travellng down the highways of life to the beat of a different drum.
ReplyDeleteIf you work on bikes in your leisure time, and work on machinery during your working hours, there is a natural segueing as your skills become developed and more valuable to others, and commercial in that people are willing to trust you and pay well for them. Also, a higher level of independence. These days, my daily activities are tied up in being useful to others, companies and individuals. There are daily brain twisters which often require thinking outside of the box. Never a dull moment. Since about a quarter of my life had been tied up in Armstrongism, there has also been a search for the answers to all of the deep philosophical questions common to mankind, questions for which Herbert W. Armstrong never really had adequate answers. Being left wanting by false teachers and pretenders kind of makes one a life-long seeker.
There are all manner of personalities and experiences common to the human ecological system and its many interrelated tiers. The thing about humans, is that it is confining to single source your growth and continuing education to any one person or organization. Tying ones existence exclusively to Armstrongism, or to any of the various ones who see themselves as teachers becomes a limitation, a throttle, or governor. It keeps you from operating at the higher revs. You almost have to conceal or disguise your intelligence in order to be trusted and considered as a member in good standing. The fact is, life has so much more to offer than that. The parable of the talents demands a much higher level of our participation.
Identity is a big, expansive quality, a growing and developing ethic. You do not want to limit your soul print! You must seek and find an environment in which you can develop and thrive. As the ancient old children's song from "Brer Rabbit" admonished, "Take that frown, turn it upside down, and you'll find yours, I know-ho-ho!"

BB Thanks for rhe interesting run down of your experiences, Cheers
DeleteAppreciate you, 1:14. I've come to see tours of duty in Armstrongism as identity theft. Better off not succumbing to that. There are better alternatives. Cheers
DeleteYou must have enjoyed the film, "Wild Hogs"
DeleteFavorite biker flick has always been "CC and Company" with Joe Namath and William Smith.

The bible's "prove all things" is an ongoing life commitment. Initially, most new ACOG members acted on the premise that everything Herb taught was correct.
ReplyDeleteBut over time, Bible study, reading "worldly" books and life experiences showed many of Herb's claims to be false. I don't see anyway around this life pattern. Unfortunately many have abdicated their adult responsibility of growing in understanding by sub contracting this out to "garwds" ministers. These members are still wearing the mental burka that Herb gave out to his followers in the 1930s.
