The nature of the Holy Spirit is a topic that has been fraught with controversy for centuries.  The Bible describes the Holy Spirit with much different analogies than what are used for the Father and the Son.  But, in general, the Christian church has come to understand the Holy Spirit to a sufficient degree to form a reasonable and scriptural doctrine.   An exception to this mainstream doctrine is the view that is found in Armstrongism and other similar denominations originating in the Restoration Movement.   The quotations above briefly illustrate the inclination of the Armstrongist view.    That view is that the Holy Spirit is an energy or force used by God to project his power.  The Holy Spirit is not a person and, therefore, it is an impersonal force.  This essay addresses the deficiency of that view.   I will not use the traditional approach to supporting the mainstream doctrine of the Holy Spirit which involves careful exegesis but rather some non-traditional arguments.  Theology gains clarity by going first to the Doctrine of God and I will begin at that point. 

God is absolute.  He created everything and sustains everything.  Deism is false.  Yet, there are Deistic tendencies in many denominational theologies.  Deism is the idea that God has created the Cosmos as an external object, like a great machine, and the machine can run without divine intervention.  It is as if you made a lawn mower in your garage and then gave it to someone else so you really no longer have anything to do with it.   In contrast, the NT says this about all created things:

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” (Hebrews 1:3)

Jesus not only created all things (in the Cosmos and in the transcendent realm), but he sustains these things across time – moment to moment.  So far, I think we can all agree with these statements. Now I am going to write something that will require some careful, non-dogmatic thought.   God does not need an energy or force to carry out the action of his will.  God is absolute and controls all things at the most fundamental level of reality.  There may be a division of responsibility among the Divine Persons but God does not need an impersonal force to project his power.  He is sovereign over everything by profound creational intimacy.  

The idea that the Holy Spirit is an energy that God uses to project his will is derived from the anthropomorphic language of the Bible.   Anthropomorphism is analogical language that illuminates events where principle rather than the details of the ontology of God are the focus.  This language is based on ideas with which we are familiar in our human realm.  Men use energy to accomplish work whether it be human strength or electricity or fire or the tapping of the nucleus of an atom.  This human model is then used by the Bible authors to depict God.  And it has a vividness that other depictions that truly reflect God’s ontology might not have for some minds.   But the model is from physics – created physics.  But if God is absolute, and he is, the physics model is not fully apt.  It is just literature but literature to good purpose. 

Armstrongists depict the Holy Spirit as an attribute of God.  It is true that God says “my Spirit,” as if the Spirit were an attribute but he also says “my Son.”   This language does not relegate both the Spirit and the Son to attributes.  Christians depict the Holy Spirit as a divine person that is both separate and in unity with God.  Throughout the OT there are references to the Spirit.  An example is, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Sprit saith the Lord.”  The question is why is the Spirit given a separate and significant presence, frequently incorporated in the statements of God, when the Spirit is just an attribute of God as Armstrongists believe?   If the Spirit is just an attribute of God could it not be easily left out of the picture – just assumed?   Couldn’t God just simply say, “I did this,” instead of “the Spirit did this” when the Spirit as an attribute simply refers to God.  If the Spirit is only an attribute, it is like you and I always saying “my hand took the pencil” instead of just saying “I took the pencil.”  The fact is in OT syntax the Spirit is accorded a separate status.  When the Spirit is mentioned, the language refers to the action and participation of the Holy Spirit as a separate divine person.  

There is a bit of sleight of hand in the Armstrongist beliefs about the Holy Spirit.  This is illustrated in the quotation from Richard H. Sedliacik at the beginning of this essay.  Sedliacik maintains that the Holy Spirit is an impersonal energy or power but it bears with it somehow God’s nature, life and mind.  The idea that the Holy Spirit bears God’s mind stands on the brink of admitting that the Holy Spirit is a separate being.   But maybe Armstrongists believe that the “mind of God” in this case is just a kind of information package carried by the Holy Spirit but not really an active mind.  In this way the Holy Spirit can bear the mind of God but still be an impersonal non-being energy.  This sleight of hand is really present so all the scriptures that indicate that the Holy Spirit is a being can be accommodated within the theory of an impersonal energy (Romans 8:27).   That does not really work.  From the context of Romans 8:27, we know that the usage of the term “mind” is not metaphor or symbol or literary personification but actual.   We have the Holy Spirit in that same verse making intercession for the saints.  Making intercession requires mind, free will, independent action, awareness, communication, the ability to analyze empirical data and so on.  

Some of the arguments against the idea of the Holy Spirit being a divine person are curious.  One argument is that by some unusual mathematics, three is a closed number and two is an open number. And the false “Trinity teaching,” so claimed, limits God to three persons.  This is coupled with the unsupportable idea that man will become “God as God is God” so there will need to be many more places at the God table.  No doubt people who believe in the Trinity do not believe the radically liberal idea that more full status Gods will be added to the God category.  But that limitation is not derived from the inherent nature of the number three. The idea that the integer three is closed is facetious.   Another argument against the Holy Spirit as a Person was made by Garner Ted Armstrong (GTA).  At one time I was quite impressed with this sophomoric argument.  GTA asserted that if Jesus was conceived by the action of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is a being, then God was not the Father of Jesus but maybe an uncle or some other relation.  GTA’s solution to this problem was to assert that the Holy Spirit is not a being but an energy.  The problem with this is that it is a violation of Occam’s Razor – that the simplest answer is the best answer and the only supportable answer.   GTA radically redefined the ontology of the Holy Spirit when the only immediate conclusion you can draw from this data is simply that God and the Holy Spirit are the same – which then leads to the Trinity.  The second quotation at the top, from Herbert W. Armstrong (HWA), is also informative.  HWA saw God as a hierarchy.  He did not see the co-equal relationship that John referred to (John 5:18) or is evinced by the Three-fold Formula.  Unsurprisingly, the model of a single leader ruling over a hierarchy seemed to dominate HWA's thinking and was the backbone of church government and an Ambassador College education.  This has an Arianist flavor which was held by some in the Church of God Seventh Day.  

Speaking of metaphor, there is a way the Bible uses metaphor that bears on this topic.  Most metaphors in the Bible are “downward metaphors.”  I am coining that term.  This refers to comparing a higher being or object to a lesser being or object.   We might find a scripture that states that the Holy Spirit was “poured out.”  If the Holy Spirit is really a person, this is a downward metaphor.  It makes an intelligent being seem like liquid in order to vividly emphasize a trait – in this case scope or availability.  This is found often in the Bible.  “Upward metaphors” are seldom found in the Bible, if at all.  (Let me know if you find one.)  This is comparing a lesser being or object to a higher being or object.  This is like saying, “the ocean decided to fight against us.”  My guess is that this is seldom used because it has pagan implications.  Pagans may see various forces, energies, flora and fauna in nature as animistic beings.  This leads to a probabilistic rather than categorical conclusion.  It is very unlikely that an upward metaphor that attributes mind to an impersonal energy would be used by an NT writer.  It is more likely that when Paul in Romans 8:27 refers to the “mind of the spirit” he means just that.  The Holy Spirit is a divine person with a mind. 

Finally, the most appalling idea that devolves from the belief that the Holy Spirit is an energy is expressed in Herman Hoeh’s statement in the final quotation in the list of quotations at the top. This is the idea that when Armstronngists become “God as God is God” they will have dominion over the Holy Spirit.  While this view is held out of misunderstanding, it is nevertheless explosively shocking to someone who understands that the Holy Spirit is a divine person in the Trinity.  One mentally recoils and hopes that such believers in this idea will come to enlightenment and not be consigned to perdition. 

In the debate over the Holy Spirit, those who favor the Spirit as energy will claim that the scriptures that make the Spirit sound like a being are metaphorical.  And it is the reverse for those who believe the Holy Spirit is a divine person.  So, we have a kind of deadlock.  Although the debate is lopsided in terms of the number of supporters and type of supporters.   The Holy Spirit as energy is supported by few who are cultic and believe many off-the-wall ideas.  The believers in the Holy Spirit as a divine person are many and are orthodox.  Perhaps, some of the non-traditional arguments I have made in this essay will break the deadlock for a few.

 

LCG Continues To Deceive Many By Its Teaching On Jesus

 

Living Church of God, like its mother church the Radio/Worldwide Church of God, has always ridiculed Christians who are devout followers of Jesus as people not following the "REAL" Jesus that LCG claims to follow. The world is wrong, but LCG is right in its relationship to Christ. Those poor deceived "so-called" Christians around the world follow a different Christ. Actually, the fact of the matter is that LCG is the one following a "different" Christ.

Much like the Mormons who ask their converts to pray earnestly and prove their set of scripture till they get a "burning in their bosom", LCG expects members to diligently"prove" LCG's version of Jesus is the "correct" Jesus.

Prove Your Beliefs: Many assume that simply “believing in Jesus” and accepting Him into your heart is all that is required to be a Christian. However, the Bible teaches differently! The Scriptures warn that false teachers will also talk about believing in Jesus and will deceive many (Matthew 24:3–5; 2 Corinthians 11:1–4). The Apostle Paul advised Christians to “Test [carefully examine] all things; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Luke states that the Christian belief in Jesus’ resurrection was based on “many infallible proofs” seen by many witnesses (Acts 1:1–3), and Peter mentions that the Apostles were eyewitnesses to events they wrote about (2 Peter 1:16). The Apostle Paul confidently provided a persuasive defense for his beliefs (Acts 26). If we take time to prove what we believe, we, too, should be able to defend and explain what we believe to anyone!

Well, they had to cancel the weekend because not too many wanted to waste their weekend there.

There is an abundance of blame to go around whenever David C. Pack of The Restored Church of God fails. Living in a broken reality where The Twilight Zone meets Groundhog Day, the tragic morality tale of the vexed Pastor General will not have a happy ending.

 

"The Greatest Untold Story!" Series is Unending. Dave's god is hell-bent on stringing the brethren along while ruse after ruse toys with their hope, eroding their faith. The Kingdom of God will never arrive when he preaches it will, no matter how much shouting is involved.

 

The truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

 

David C. Pack teaches strange fiction but calls it the truth.

 

The Mystery of God is ended. Daniel is unsealed. God showed me this. I’m rushing to call this out and make it plain. The Series is over. The 1335 began last Thursday. Bla bla bla.

 

During "The Greatest Unending Story! (Part 417)," given on February 2, 2023, he had a few more make-believe topics hidden up his sleeve.

 

The Three Shepherds of Zechariah 11 are finally identified. But not really.

 

A mistranslation opened a can of prophetic worms. But, this was a mis-mistranslation.

 

 

The elusively mysterious Three Shepherds of Zechariah 11 has been on the minds of RCG members since 2012. Speculation about their identity has been going on for over a decade.

 

Part 417 – February 2, 2023

@ 19:11 I’m gonna show you an extraordinary thing. I found the Three Shepherds…I found them. I found them in one place after another, after another, and I’m gonna show them to you.

 

On paper, this would sound like the most intriguing topic of Part 417. But, as with all things RCG, the reality is not nearly as rewarding as we hoped.

 

@ 31:22 Now, who are the Three Shepherds? Who are the Three Shepherds?

 

That sounds pretty convincing, right? He certainly knows how to tease up interest.

 

Dave goes into the book of Daniel and then severely disappoints anyone interested.

 

@ 32:17 I found them. They are mentioned at least three times…I’m just gonna tell you who these shepherds are. Who these rulers are. They are rulers who rise in front of Nebuchadnezzar, and they are consecutive. Wow.

 

Wow? He was excited about this, like it was a big deal.

 

@ 34:01 And watch. I will show you. I’ll show you. You’ll see it…Watch this. So, those would be three rulers. Horns means governments. The Three Shepherds are rulers who are also called horns.

 

He tied the horns in Daniel 7 to the Shepherds in Zechariah 11. Boom: minds blown. Or something.

 

@ 39:52 This becomes an extraordinary statement: “Three rulers I cut off in one month.” That means they had to die before he [Man of Sin] came to power. And in fact, they died before he was in power and went into Egypt before the 10 days. Now, this has been a mystery.

 

He says “shepherds” means “rulers” and “horns” means “rulers,” therefore, the three shepherds of Zechariah 11 are the three horns of Daniel 7 that will be cut off in one month.

 

“How do three horns in Daniel prove they are the same shepherds in Zechariah?”

 

"Because I said so."

 

“Good enough for me.”

 

Theorizing about three unnamed, vague leaders rising to power before the not-resurrected not-Man of Sin does not seem like extraordinary knowledge. Honestly, this was a massive letdown because I was curious to hear what he had to say.

 

Perhaps nobody in the audience caught this but Dave never identified WHO they were, only WHAT they were. Saying “three leaders” without naming them or giving a country of origin or their world role today amounts to a gigantic turd sandwich.

 

That is worse than a Nothingburger because he built it up so much.

 

@ 31:24 Who are the Three Shepherds?

 

We still do not know because he never told us. WHAT is not the same as WHO. WHAT is not nearly as important as WHO. WHO is everything. WHAT is junior varsity.

 

To put a very fine point on this: David C. Pack never said WHO the Three Shepherds of Zechariah 11 are. He thought, assumed, presumed, and guessed WHAT they are. We knew they were leaders back in 2012, so thanks for nothing, Dave.

You won’t believe what I'm gonna show you). I can only wish I had learned this long ago. I would have never wrestled if a single word were correctly translated. I would have never wrestled with three kingdoms or four. But, a very big mistake was made in the Book of Revelation...

 

In the Kingdom, Dave will offer sucker punches followed by apologies to all the translators he has accused over the years. His mistranslations sometimes have an expiration date of a week, while others are tattooed on his lower back.

 

Continuing the tradition of reshaping the Bible into his own image, Dave changed a common word in Revelation 6:17 to explain away months of waffling.

For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

 

The boney fingers of blame are pointed at men who died centuries ago.

 

@ 9:31 Here’s the mistranslation: “For the great day of THEIR wrath is come.”

 

According to Dave, the word is plural, not singular. That is a vital discovery just as time runs out.

 

Dave concocted a new theory that the day of the great wrath is from both the Father and Jesus Christ. Therefore, there are three Kingdom periods, not four. (Insert rays of sunlight and angelic choir here.)

 

@ 09:25 It’s plural. It’s not saying one or the other. Now, that’s powerful. Had I known that, it would have been impossible to ever question whether the Day of Christ was other than the same day of God’s wrath. This is His day. His wrath.

 

According to Strong’s Concordance, hautou is used 924 times in the New Testament. Following this line of thinking opens up 923 other possibilities of pronoun mistranslation to be shifted upon need later. The Bible can now say whatever you want. A biblical charlatan's paradise.

Using the same logic, any Prophecy Know-It-All could proclaim a mistranslation led him to see “HER wrath is come.” Since women are not in leadership roles, the only inarguable possibility is this is the Church. So, the brethren have a “great day of wrath” upon the world. Nobody ever understood this before because nobody else was ever led to look up the word.

 

With that bathroom door left open on this, anyone who wants to take liberty with any of the pronouns in the New Testament could have a field day. Wiccans would be excited to see the Bible teach about a goddess.

 

 

Mistranslations are not a curse to David C. Pack. They are a blessing.

 

@ 10:28 That means the 10 days of Tribulation terminated at the start of God’s wrath, which is not just the Seventh Seal, but the Sixth. I don’t know that was ever understood. But it's after the Tribulation.

 

@ 10:52 …and it's the wrath of both Beings. It is Their day. So, Christ's day or "the end" could never have been coming before Their wrath came at the same time. How I wish I had known that. But it never crossed my mind to look it up.

 

One thing about Dave is that he has a genuine skill (no snark inserted) of knowing how to string Bible verses together to make a point. With this explanation, he almost had me. I opened my reasoning to the possibility he could be right on this and tried to see it from his perspective.

 

To be fair, whether it is singular wrath or plural wrath will not make a difference when the time comes. Punishment from two God beings would be no more terrifying than from One.

 

But then, he had to slip a lie in.

 

He almost got away with his point without making a blatant and verifiable falsehood. I wonder if the man is incapable of speaking the truth anymore. It is as if everything he says is tainted in some way.

 

@ 11:17 But never looked it up. I don't think you would be able to do it in any generation before you could go to eSword and see that the Greek is 100% plural.

 

Record scratch. How many of the brethren fact-checked this?

 

The Greek word is not 100% plural. eSword calls out David C. Pack as a liar.

The New Testament would need to be rewritten to make all 924 times in 767 verses plural.

 

Even Ed knows that is malarkey.

 

But, if the apostle and Pester General says the word is 100% plural, then everyone in RCG needs to accept that. Facts be damned.

 

 

The Packian Triad of Fraud missed an opportunity when they did not go to town on The Rules of Effective Bible Study #10 “Use More Than One Translation.”

 

As it turns out, that plural information was not-so-hidden.

 

The word is translated as "their" in the NIV, ESV, CSB, NASB20, NASB95, LSB, NET, RSV, ASV, and NLT.

 

That is an impressive list. However, all these versions are not suitable for doctrine per The Restored Church of God and Worldwide Church of God standards.

 

RCG has a booklet on the topic, “How We Got the Bible—Which Translations Are Best?”

 

It concludes on page 33.

 

Despite some inaccuracies of the King James Bible, we recommend it as your primary study Bible,

 not only because it is one of the most accurate but because many study tools, such as Strong's Concordance, Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon and others, are based on the KJV…No Bible translation is 100% accurate. But when God opens a person’s mind to His understanding, that person will always strive to divide truth from error.

 

Hmm. Page 33. Dave preached Part 417 on the 33^rd anniversary of his first doodie in Wadsworth. Perhaps that means something significant. But maybe not. Just a thought.

 

When you apply Rule #6 "Examine the Context," and Rule #8 "The Bible Interprets Itself," the correct answer about Revelation is…well…revealed.

 

Revelation 6:16

…Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.

 

The wrath of the Lamb is identified in verse 16.

 

Verse 17 refers to the wrath of the previous sentence making it singular. The Lamb’s wrath.

 

Revelation 6:17

For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

 

The translators had it right. Derp.

 

But that does not matter.

 

@ 11:30 Now, that’s helpful because it leads us to the clarification regarding another verse that strengthens Abib 1…We’re building 10 days of Tribulation, then wrath, and then Abib 1.

 

Dave often makes his point and ignores the implications because he needs to bulldoze his way through his notes. The dominoes of misunderstanding topple one into another. He took this “plural wrath means three Kingdoms” idea and ran with it, fumbling into other cascading errors.

 

@ 21:35 So, in other words, the Great Tribulation begins March 12^th. Since this is February 2^nd, and this is a short month by 2 or 3 days on average, it becomes very important if we can pin down the things in front of the 10 days, but not until we've locked in old cement the 10 days.

 

The things in front of the 10 days land us on tomorrow morning. Tuesday, February 7.

 

@ 1:45:01 A few other things that suggest this is right. It looks like Elijah blasts at a full moon. That would be about the 15^th or the 16^th [Shevat – February 6 or 7]. Well, it turns out he blasts at the 17^th. Pretty much a full moon.

 

@ 1:54:28 I don’t see how you get past Tuesday at about, what, 10:17 or something in the morning here. I just don’t see how you do it.

 

But we know from the Pathetic Update Saturday night to not be surprised when nothing happens. A surprise was never an option.

The wacky messages coming out of The Restored Church of God are so thick with deceptions, contradictions, lies, and foolishness that it became self-evident that shoving all that information into one article was inefficient.

 

Shorter, focused articles provide more content spread over days to make it easier to absorb the Horror Show going on behind the closed gates in Wadsworth.

 

When David C. Pack spoke for 1 hour and 56 minutes on February 2, giving “The Greatest Unending Story! (Part 417)," it was apparent multiple postings would be necessary.

 

Yesterday’s Evil Men article covered the 1335 of Daniel and how members leaving RCG are committing spiritual suicide. Cheery.

 

The plan for today was to cover another mis-mistranslation and how the Three Shepherds of Zechariah 11 were identified, but not really…not at all, actually. Tomorrow would wrap up Part 417 with how adamant Dave was that the Series was over even though we all know it is not.

 

However, flexibility in the whistleblowing business is vital. I make it a policy not to alter my personal plans due to Dave Chaos, but when it comes to reporting on significant changes when I was already planning to write, making adjustments is necessary.

Prophetic Update – February 4, 2023

Brethren, if we make it through Tuesday and our wait is somehow longer (as was speculated to be a possibility in Part 417), Mr. Pack plans to deliver a message mid-week. In the meantime, here are a few verses to consider that could explain a longer wait: (1) Matthew 24:22 says “except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.” (2) Mark 13:20 “except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.” (3) Romans 9:28 “For He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.”

 

That frequent, uncomfortable feeling nagged Dave all day. He felt haunted again.

 

A part of David C. Pack knows he is a biblical fraud. The wrestling match inside his head is sweaty Olympic-grade. Not that flashy WWE theatrical stuff. No, this is a bone-on-bone vexation.

 

The biggest doubter of what David C. Pack teaches in The Restored Church of God is David C. Pack.

He does not want to get nailed to a time, but he JUST SAID it was Tuesday morning, February 7. His waffling brain is twitching in real-time at the lectern.

 

Dave wrestles with himself from one breath to the next. This is a significant examination of public mental decay. I do not revel in the steady decline of David C. Pack. He was once "my father in the gospel" but has since betrayed that gospel. And he has betrayed the reason he founded The Restored Church of God in 1999. Whether the cause of his deterioration is physical or spiritual, the results are the same.

I think I I think I've told you as much as I can, but I don't know how you get past the morning. Derp. He sees a way past Tuesday now. He will see a way past Friday, February 10. And then past March 12. And then past March 22. And then into Passover and Unleavened Bread. And then past that into Pentecost. You heard it here first, folks.

 

 

The Restored Church of God served rotten waffles on Saturday night. The spiritual food there is tainted and makes people sick. Yet, they continue to endure. The teachings of David C. Pack do not pass the sniff test, yet they swallow it anyhow.

 

It is sour to the nose. Sour to the mouth. Sour to the gut. Sour to the heart. The seats of the Main Hall at Headquarters are drenched in vomit. It is incredible what people are willing to accept as they continue to sit in puke and let more spew into their faces.

 

David C. Pack is not a goodman. He is not a man of his word. He is not a man to be trusted. Those are not opinions. David C. Pack has consistently proven God is not guiding him. History records those facts, which should terrify anyone still giving him their money. You are paying him to vomit on you.

 

Why does an ex-member/ex-employee hear the words of David C. Pack, but members of The Restored Church of God do not? The man tells you everything you need to hear to know whether he is truthful. The words from his lips expose what spirit he serves.

 

Over and over and over again, he screams, "Do not trust me!" and yet the people abide. They stop their ears and refuse to accept the man as he is.

 

The brethren do not believe him when they should yet believe him when they should not. Wrong judgment proceedeth, all right. Big-time.

 

Members of The Restored Church of God: Your Pastor General could not make it through the weekend believing his own teachings. If you stood alongside your apostle on Thursday, he has taken a step away from YOU and has already changed his tune.

 

He is counting on you to continue to ignore his waffling. He teaches something and walks it back within days. He even says something and contradicts it in the following sentence.

 

Hear what David C. Pack says.

 

Tuesday will come and go. The 1335 clock will be reset. The plea for patience and tithe checks will continue into the vanishing point.

The Pathetic Update Saturday proves God did not “show Dave these final things.” Was it a mistake? A misunderstanding? An assumption? Or was it a lie?

 

Regardless of how you want to classify that statement, every answer leads you to the undeniable fact it was not of God.

 

Not. Of. God.

 

Brethren, hear the words of David C. Pack. Do not waffle like he does.
