Robin Webber: Prospective Members Driving 14 Hours To Church Equivalent to Queen of Sheba Visiting Solomon

Robin Webber says:

Are people searching today for that “pearl of great price”? Recently in a trip back to Cincinnati, I was struck by a conversation with a fellow minister. He shared how prospective members recently traveled 14 hours to attend our services. Hearing the eternal truths of God and fellowshipping with like-minded people was so important that they made the trip! They obviously believed the drive was worth it! It reminded me of the Queen of Sheba coming so far to visit Solomon to see if what she heard was true. Were these folks seeking a “pearl of great price”? You fill in the answer.

  1. I would not walk four blocks to hear Webber let alone fourteen hours! All I remember about the guy is how condescending, arrogant, and self righteous he was while in Pasadena.

  2. If the travelers are so inclined, there is probably a good Messianic congregation much closer to their home base that teaches most of the same principles, without all the past history and baggage.

I drive a lot of miles. I'll drive 14 hours to pick up a classic car, or make a 10 hour round trip for a customer, but I'd never drive 14 hours just to go to church. Been there, done that, and the benefits were just not worth the effort.

    Okay, I'll bite.

"Were these folks seeking a 'pearl of great price'?"

Oh, I'm sorry, that's the wrong question. You lost the final round of Jeopardy.

See, Robin, it doesn't matter what they're seeking. It doesn't matter what you may have implied you had to offer them. The right question is, do you, in fact, have anything to offer, or are you just full of empty promises, incredibly bad scholarship, and tired cliches?

By the time they've taken your promises to the bank and have found out how bankrupt they are, because of that triple-tithing scheme, by now, you've had a chance to bankrupt them. That's how the whole Jesus con works, and HWA was a bad person because he was a master of shamelessly and ruthlessly exploiting good people in their search for meaning. He tells you he has this mythic "pearl of great price" you have to go off on a wild goose chase for "pigeon's milk" to find, meanwhile, he was milking you of your "pearls of regular price" and filling his coffers with them, which we never saw again.

And you're working the same con, Robin. The only ones in this equation offering anything are these poor saps, good people, driving 14 hours to be shamelessly and ruthlessly milked by bad people—you and your cronies.

  4. Hey, way to compare oneself to Solomon. Too bad all that is only a myth and/or legend.

  5. Somebody on the COE ought to take the stage name "Batman" for the meetings. Imagine, Batman and Robin!

Doesn't Davy Crockett sit on Meredith's board?

  6. We heard this a lot from our minister and regional director in Canada (PCG). They would always say how there were members in Africa that had to travel for days on dusty roads and hitchiking to get to God's Holydays and that we should be fortunate to only have to travel a couple of hours to meet for services. The whole things a guilt trip.

The comparison breaks down when the excited new believers arrive at UCG church services and meet all the godless old unbelievers.

  8. In response to "Doesn't Davy Crockett sit on Meredith's board?" Answer: There is no way to know. Meredith keeps it a secret. I asked him once why he keeps it a secret who is on the board. His response: "Well, we try to publish a picture once a year or so."

  9. I like walking from my bedroom to my office to hear messages that I have selected to listen to. I don't want to listen to the pre-packaged propaganda that most COG groups bring to the table.

It is more like sweet, innocent Little Red Riding Hood thinking she is going on a long trip to visit her dear old grandmother but instead running into the Big Bad Webber Wolf.

  11. It surely would simplify life if ministers smelled like their character.

Just imagine, back in the day, a young family out cruising Colorado Blvd. on a Sunday drive:

(Young boy covering nose with handkerchief) "What's that smell???? What's that awful smell????"

"Well, son, we're on the West side of Pasadena now. Herbert W. Armstrong is probably back in town!"

    Answer:
I don't know, but if they were seeking a “pearl of great price”, they surely would be disappointed by finding that the UCG service was only a "place of great stink"!

  13. Pearl of Great Price. I think those last two words pretty much sum up the experiences of all who have dedicated ther lives and those of their families to these preposterous clowns.
