Herbert Armstrong's Tangled Web of Corrupt Leaders

Kitchen will be a bitchin!
ReplyDeleteThis is really strange. I took a nap at the end of the day, my way sometimes of decompressing and processing. I had a very strange dream in which I was once again living at home, and Herbert W. Armstrong had been visiting my parents. When he got up to leave, as I shook his hand, I dropped my cell phone, and the plastic broke. Concerned, as he saw me picking up the pieces, he came back into the room to speak with me. He told me that within the next few weeks he was going to wrestle Jesse Ventura in a charity wrestling match, and removed his shirt and made some muscles as he explained that he had been training for the event. He wanted to know if I thought it was enough, and I told him he would do just fine.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine what would have prompted a dream, after all of these years, in which HWA acted as a normal, gracious, human being who was involved in healthy, altruistic activities, but there he was. He was not mean-spirited or arrogant, and I was not angry. Just imagine if our church had been a normal one in which a kind pastor general had acted in a nurturing and mentoring way. We're all kind of blinded to ourselves. I wonder if that's the way he actually saw himself, in spite his concept of authority and importance.

Of course they see themselves in a different way....HWA and all the other Hitlers. But it's LUUUUUUUUV, REMEMBER? >GOD'S GOVERNMENT.
Bob, haha about your dream. The thing is HWA did have a fiendly, fun side. Of course we know he was also mean and hot tempered. But sometimes he put on the kindly grandfather role. He was especially nice to the women AC students.
ReplyDeleteI remember during a sports day event at AC I cut my leg. He witnessed the accident and was very concerned. Later in the day he came around and asked me how I was. I was so thrilled that HWA had paid attention to me.
Then he always came to watch the women play basketball too. Not too many people showed up for the womens games, but we were always excited when HWA showed up, especially because he wasn't interested in the mens games.
Now, maybe he had impure motivations but it did seem kind of cute at the time.
I also remember him getting involved in the decorating of the women's dorm. He was walking around picking colour schemes and asking us what we thought.
A many faceted man I believe, he also liked mad magazine. Like many men who become powerful, it seems he was meaner to his family than others.
Bob, been sniffing gasoline when working on them choppers???
ReplyDeleteJames,
ReplyDeleteActually, it's bike week here, and mine is down, seriously in need of a valve job which it will receive after I've paid my taxes.
Don't worry. I have not changed my opinions about HWA! The reason I shared the dream was that it was a shocking departure from the realities that most of us experienced. The first time I met the man was as a child. I was carefully washing my hands in the tabernacle bathroom, and without my even doing anything wrong, he warned me not to splash. Then when I shared the experience with my parents, they reprimanded me for not having called him "Sir". You just can't win in the presence of such authority. These authoritarians regularly get credit for creating agnostics and atheists, but they also created a few bikers along the way!

I love your stories Byker Bob!
Glad you like them, Brit. I've got bunches and bunches of them. When a rebel type grows up believing that he's only going to live to be 27, he tends to overcompensate by living life to the full. Law of unintended consequences, unanticipated by HWA and his lackeys.

Anon. 11:39, I had no idea that HWA became involved with student activities in the ways which you described. The only examples we had of this during my years were the dinner parties he threw for some of the upper class-men, and, yes, he was said to be charming, playing the piano, sharing details about the various artwork in his home, and cracking jokes. Apparently it was a marked departure from the explosive tirades to which we were exposed during sermons and bible Study.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I've never enjoyed being around most authority figures. Some noteworthy exceptions have been natural guides or mentors, and their style was infectious, influencing the tone for entire organizations. However, in all too many cases authority affects ego and ethics, corrupting the individuals exercising it.

HWA made an appearance in another video... about 1:10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9vmiyQr4U4
