1959: Don't Plant Cucumbers Next to Watermelons, They'll become Perverted! Peas and Beans in Corn is Fine!

Gotta watch out for the perverted, defiled crops! The horror!
So much emphasis on the physical while the spiritual was completely ignored.......

Did you know that one of Satan's biggest deceptions against humanity was cross-breeding watermelons and cucumbers?

In its never-ending need to control church members lives, Herbert Armstrong also laid down rules on how to raise watermelons.

In the early years of the church a large percentages of the members had their own gardens and grew their own food. These people were not idiots and knew how to grow produce. That made no difference though to the well-kept boys in Pasadena who rarely dirtied their hands or had callouses from hard work.  It was so easy to read some books and then tell the members what to do.

Ultimately though, this went far deeper than watermelons.
In thinly veiled race-based comments, church embers were told not to breed hybrids, whether in family life or in their gardens.
Only quality people keep their produce pure...hint, hint.

  1. It reminds me of the time that Wayne Turgeon checked the label on my sweater to see if it was made of mixed fabrics. Mixed fabrics were forbidden. Sadly, I could only afford cheap stuff because I had to fork over so much to the PCG.

    1. Assholes used to pull the earplug jack out of my radio in the AC dorms to see if I was listening to rock n roll (That’s all I ever listened to)

    2. PCG actually cares about mixed fabrics?

  2. I'm so glad we were not farmers, or even had a garden worth worrying about. Mind control seems to be what was uppermost in his mind, no matter what the subject. POWER! Oh, the power!!!

  3. The Churches of God should not mix their ignorance with reality either because the theology and religion produced is inferior and weak.

  4. I just wonder what they thought would happen.

    A Cucumelon? A Watercumber? A CuCuWaterCumberMelon?

The HORRORS if a Cucuwatercumbermelon was in the FirstFruits! ;)

Or even a plain old perverted watermelon.

P.S. Know how Meredith determined if a Watermelon was ripe or not?

    Answer: He spanked it! ;)

    Now....perverted cucumbers.....

  5. They are probably already eating genetically modified corn and don't know it.

  6. well if you end up with a hybrid, saving seeds for next year will result in starvation since hybrids rarely, if ever, produce a viable crop from seed...

that is what God means by "defiled"...

  7. It is disgusting how the church tried to run every aspect of our lives. Apparently we were too stupid to know anything.

  8. There's a war in both the secular and religious realm on self responsibility. Hence HWAs 'beware of pulling yourself up by your boot straps,' which extended to gardening. Governments are to have all responsibility, while its citizens are to have non.
I believe there is murderous envy behind this belief, as well as power lust.

    1. Agree anon 1:02 envy has always been an epidemic within WCG culture.

  9. Where does that leave a mule, which is a cross between a male donkey and female horse. Mules are stronger and have greater endurance than donkeys.

  10. Bunch of city boys posting in this thread! In this particular case, the advice is spot-on! This bit of farming advice is much, much more sound than the advice given elsewhere about the land Sabbath, and infinitely more sound than much of the doctrinal, prophetic, and "Christian living" advice given by the church's ministry. If only the Good News had been a farming magazine instead of a religious propaganda rag!

  11. If I wanted veggies I'd pop down to my local supermarket. Also, not once did I ever refrain from what the worldwide church referred to as "unclean" meats. Every morning for breakfast I eat pork sausage, country ham & bacon with scrambled eggs and homemade buttermilk biscuits.

  12. As a hobby farmer I have raised chickens, turkeys, goats, rabbits and had a couple of cows. We have had a garden for the past 10 years. With livestock, cross breeding can bring out the best of both breeds and you get much stronger stock. Constant breeding within the genetic pool creates inbred animals that are inferior. I have never had any issues with my garden plants cross breeding with each other, maybe they did it at night when I wasn't watching.

  14. Before I was baptized I came across this in Leviticus 19:19. During the next ministerial visit I asked about this verse. The minister, Kerry McGuinness, replied, "We always like being asked this question because it shows you are reading your Bible." And then gave some kind of answer. McGuinness left the WCG in the mid-1970s. Does anybody know where he is now?

  15. Humor about "perversion" aside... if god had to cause them to reproduce after their own kind, instead of them being unable to actually crossbreed, he knew about the issue and didnt correct it in production. So clearly these "perversions" have some usefulness, or their god is just lazy...

  16. Mixed fabrics were forbidden

In my WCG days this was only stressed by a few members who would look at labels for mixes (usually a natural fiber with an artificial one) and say, "Unclean! Unclean!"

The actual prohibition was wool with linen, and I've never heard anyone in the WCG or splinters explain why. It has to do with the priestly garments, and the only exception for non-Levites was wearing tzitzit.
