Gaslighting in the COG: When the questioner is the problem

How many times have we heard these phrases!

13 comments:

  1. To see how gaslighting works, watch the classic movie Gaslight, which gave us the phrase.

  2. And when you get really negative: "You're outta here......!"

  3. Yes, it was a great movie. From the ACOG perspective, all questioners are problems.

  4. All COG teach a mixture of truth and falsehood, and the intention is always for the ministry to feed their bellies (Romans 16:18).

If you point out any false teachings, you threaten their self-interest, the tithes, and Holy Day offerings, which were done away with at the advent of the New Testament church!

    2 Peter 2:2
"But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them...." (keeping the Feasts is denying Christ who nailed these ordinances to the cross (Colossians 2:14)

    2 Peter 2:3
"And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you:..." (the intention is always personal gain)

    Jude 11
" Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward..."

This has been the pattern since HWA until now with all those ministers who came from WCG. The warnings of the first-era apostles were for our time, and it is happening right under our noses!

  5. Why is it that Armstrongite ministers are so draconian and authoritarian with the brethren? Do they not realize that in microcontrolling members' behavior, they are taking on and usurping the role of the Holy Spirit? You'd almost have to assume that they believe that He is only some kind of impersonal force or power as opposed to a sentient, interactive being!!!

Thanks for mentioning that movie: Gaslight. Today, I watched it for the very first time: it is very informative.

Interesting comment, BB, but what specifically did you have in mind, scripture-wise, for a sentient, interactive being?

Something came to my mind, and it was:

"As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them." Acts 13:2

    Have a delightful Sabbath day,

    John

Are you for real John ? Blind guides who say you see but don't.

  8. John, you are right!

Acts 13:2 is a perfect scriptural illustration of the Holy Spirit being a sentient and interactive being!

This is so definitive, in fact, that some binitarian will doubtless feel duty bound to "identify" it as a mistranslation, or to refer to it as an allegorical statement, or personification.

  9. My minister constantly accused me of "lifting myself up", "being proud", and "satanic" because I had a different opinion then him and asked some questions. I came to see these chastisements as a form of manipulative control, and even spiritual abuse. One should never question the unasailable doctrine of government, or as Gerald Weston calls it, the most easily proven doctrine in the bible...

  10. Reminds me of HWA insinuating that "only piano" or orchestal music is "clean" but guitar a no-no, & it being banned-by-HWA.

  11. Herb never liked country music either. There were a couple great country bands in the Pasadena church area and they all disbanded when Herb threw one of his hissy fits in the early 80's.
