COGWA: Prophecy Comes Alive! There Are Lots Of Cars On The Roads Running To And Fro!

Those rapidly aging fun boys down in McKinney, Texas, are absolutely killing it right now, aren't they? They're churning out a list of oh-so-prophetic signs that we're definitely, positively in the end times—like, for real this time. It's as if COGWA and Bob Thiel all dipped into the same dusty old playbook of exhausted Armstrongist nonsense. But oh boy, the absolute gem is their very first one: the top indicator of impending doom is... wait for it... all those cars zipping around, making people "run to and fro." Seriously? That's their blockbuster revelation? Armstrongism just keeps plumbing new depths of desperation every single day!

Of course, they merrily prattle on with the same worn-out Church of God claptrap, stuff they happily milk for all it's worth when it suits them. Computers and AI? Total boogeymen, until these geniuses need them to power their "awesome" work. And thanks to those evil machines and the internet, news flashes around the globe in an instant, so folks hear about every famine, earthquake, and disaster the second it hits—instead of waiting weeks or months like in the good old days. But hey, facts keep screaming that these things aren't actually ramping up; nope, it's just the news traveling faster. Shocking, right?

The rest of their brilliant collaboration with Bob Thiel is here:

Specifically, the time of the end is when all of the following prophesied circumstances will be in place. Looking at the list below, consider that these dynamics were not present throughout most of human history—or even the first half of the 20th century. But together, they give the picture of a world on the brink of the Great Tribulation. Reading through these identifiers, there now seem to be only a few details yet to materialize before the final 3½ years of this age commence.

    • “Many shall run to and fro” (Daniel 12:4): This prophetic trend comes to mind whenever we’re on a crowded road or in a busy airport. There are now over a billion cars around the world, and millions of passengers fly rapidly through the skies every day.
    • “Knowledge shall increase” (Daniel 12:4): The last few years have witnessed an explosion of knowledge, manifested in technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), self-driving vehicles, wearable technology, cloud computing, 3D printing, quantum computing, instantaneous language translation, advanced robotics and many other jaw-dropping developments.
    • The capability for humanity to destroy all life: “And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved” (Matthew 24:22). The capacity for humans to destroy all life on the planet did not exist until after 1945, with the advent of the atomic era. Since then, the proliferation of nuclear weapons has made human annihilation possible—multiple times over.
    • Increase in famines, disease epidemics and earthquakes: “And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places” (Matthew 24:7). Luke 21:11 calls them “great” earthquakes. There have been food shortages, pandemics and earthquakes many times throughout human history. But Christ’s specific mention of them in the context of end-time events shows that they will become a much more notable, frequent phenomenon.
    • Ability to view an event around the world: Revelation 11:3-11 reveals that shortly before Christ returns, His “two witnesses”—who will testify to the world from Jerusalem for 42 months (3½ years)—will be killed. “Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues and nations will see their dead bodiesthree-and-a-half days” (verse 9). For people all around the world to view this, the technology will need to already exist. Not only is this now possible, most of us now see images from other nations daily via satellites and Internet networks.
    • An army of 200 million can be fielded: Revelation 9:13-19 describes another event near the end of the 3½ years, during the sixth trumpet. Verse 16 shows that an enormous army will be fielded at that time: “The number of cavalry troops was 200,000,000. I heard how many there were” (International Standard Version). Furthermore, this comes after staggering numbers of humans have already died, as revealed in Revelation 6 through 9. The ability to field such an exceptionally large army was not possible until recent times, when the populations of some nations (such as China and India, for example) or groups of nations grew so dramatically.
    • Sacrifices at Jerusalem begin: Daniel 12 points specifically to events at the end of this age (verses 4, 9). Verse 1 calls it the worst time of trouble in human history, which coincides with Christ’s words in Matthew 24:21. How long until all these things are finished? Daniel 12:7 answers that it will be “for a time, times and half a time. This expression, also mentioned in other prophecies, equates with the final 3½ years (or 1,260 days) before Christ returns.

Verse 11 gives even more details: “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety [1,290] days.”

In order for sacrifices to be taken away just before the final 3½ years, they will first need to be started again. At this time, a number of Jews are advocating and preparing for a restoration of the sacrificial system in Jerusalem. Thus far, those efforts have been stymied by both political and civil opposition. However, Bible prophecy makes it clear the day is coming when animal sacrifices will be instituted and then taken away. Read more in our blog post “Does Bible Prophecy Require a Third Temple to Be Built?

    • Jerusalem surrounded by armies: “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near” (Luke 21:20). Verse 24 adds that Jerusalem will then come under gentile (non-Israelite) control. Matthew’s account adds the detail that the “abomination of desolation” (connected with the ending of sacrifices) will be part of this takeover of Jerusalem (Matthew 24:15).

In Zechariah 12:3, which also refers to Jerusalem in the end times, God says, “And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.”

If there’s any city on earth that’s in the news almost daily—as a focus of conflict, division, bloodshed and controversy—it’s Jerusalem. It is easy to see how military activity could quickly begin and escalate there at any time. For more about what the Bible reveals regarding Jerusalem, see our article “Jerusalem in Prophecy.”

    • Final revival of the Roman Empire: Students of Bible prophecy know that God foretold the rise and fall of four great empires. The fourth was the Roman Empire, and the Bible shows that it would be revived again at the time of the end (Daniel 2:42-44).

The end-time revival of the Roman Empire (which has always been centered in Europe) will be a union of 10 “kings” (or kingdoms or states) who agree to come under the authority of the “beast” spoken of in Revelation 17. “And the ten horns which you saw [in verse 3] are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast” (verses 12-13).

These 10 “kings” will not be perfectly unified, but will cooperate to accomplish their mutual goals. This reality is pictured by the 10 toes of the image shown in Daniel 2:42-44. The 10 toes are referred to as “kings” that are together at the end of this age, shortly before God sets up His Kingdom on earth.

Today, multiple voices are encouraging Europe to stand on its own two feet and greatly increase its own military might. And eyes are now turning to Germany, expecting it to take on a greater leadership role. History and prophecy indicate Germany will have a leading role in this future European power.

  1. The capacity for humans to destroy all life on the planet did not exist until after 1945

The ACOGs are stuck on an old script. They don't seem to realize that bubonic plague killed more humans, and a larger percentage, than have been killed by nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are hard to build and are in the hands of just a few, while a plague virus can move, uncontrolled, throughout a population.

  2. This is them doubling down on all the things we regularly refute here. Some of their members must be hanging out on Banned and beginning to ask questions.

The funny thing is they could open up their Bibles and plainly read in Revelation about global warming, but, it won't even register with them, cause their favorite political party doesn't believe in it and has created alternative stats to "disprove" it. Just recently we saw some of those quoted right here.

    1. “Global warming" you say 1:47? Tell that to my frostbitten toes! It’s spring here, but we’ve been stuck in 2 months of cold, wet, wintry misery—like someone forgot to tell the weather it’s not July anymore! I’d love a bit of that “catastrophic overheating” the politicians and media keep screaming about! While they’re busy prophesying fiery doom (straight out of Revelation, apparently), the rest of us are just trying not to freeze in our own backyards. Funny how their “science” never quite matches the view from my window.

    2. What you are experiencing, 10:32, is the alteration of the jetstreams. That the earth is warming is not even questioned, because that is measurable. Currents in a warming ocean which cause the jetstreams have been causing Arctic and Antarctic blasts, even as permafrost thaws and the glaciers melt at an accelerated rate as opposed to the more or less constant rates of the past.

  3. The Armstrong churches long ago lost any credibility concerning things prophetical

This is so because Armstrong , who built a church on prophecy beginning with volume 1 of the magazine, proved over fifty years he had no idea whatsoever where they were in the prophetical scheme of things

Yet the pretense continues to be held out - as for the Jehovah Witnesses. It becomes a way to dupe people like Armstrong’s modus opperandi.

  4. An army of 200 million can be fielded: Revelation 9:13-19 describes another event near the end of the 3½ years, during the sixth trumpet. Verse 16 shows that an enormous army will be fielded at that time:

This is another bit of speculation that goes way back to Armstrong and is repeated here.

The number - 200 m - strongly suggests it is not a normal army as we think of it . No country could maintain/transport/feed and support a force of 200 million .

A modern power possesses extremely sophisticated weapons and would not seek that kind of armed structure.

To allegorize the horses into tanks still doesn't make sense. There are these verses to try to make sense of:

17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone

18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed -- by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths.

19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm.

verse 17 describes something that is very unusual - the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions.
verse 18 - it’s a force that affects all the world - not just the location we first read of them - it refers to a third of mankind
verse 19 - refers to serpents with heads - and tails, that do harm

The prophetic fulfilment seems to concern something beyond our imagination; beyond human; not literal in a way we normally think of things.
Just what it means I don't know.

    1. Whatever it really means, they flogged it like a bad dog to scare us into obeying a totally unneccessary extra layer of government (themselves). It took me decades after leaving Armstrongism to go back and reexamine Revelation, consulting the works of recognized scholars along the way. We've all heard of "junk science" and "junk food". Armstrongism is junk religion. Gotta call it what it is!

    2. Yeah, BillW, I no longer think the “200 million man army” in some Bible translations is meant to be taken literally. I believe the Greek is idiomatic for a "countless" or "innumerable" multitude rather than a specific number (cf Heb 12:22; Jude 1:14 etc). Just my 0.02¢.

  5. And Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.  2Kings 6:17 NKJV.......Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. Heb 13:2......For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.  Eph 6:12

The point:   there's the spirit world.   Army of 200 million?  Place of safety?  Woes in Revelation including 5 months of stinging?  Two witnesses?  Could be all in or of the spirit world. Maybe do not look for something physical to start and then count from that to determine the time of the Coming.

    A 490 year interpretation of the 70 weeks may be wrong.......Another look:  all the time from Cyrus-Isa 44:28; 45:13 to Christ's future Coming.........7 weeks [times that are  "sevened"].....7 19 yr cycles with 7 13th months each = 133 yrs;
    62 weeks.....7 years each = 434 years; 1 week......Sunday to any future Sunday [Daniel 9:27;  "midst" is half - 70 AD?;  confirming the covenant:  Heb 8:6; 9:15-17]

Anon, excellent to provide a Eph 6:12 example with Elisha, a servant inspired by God, for our admonition.

FWIIW, here is a portion of a 1997 sermon on Trumpets regarding the 5th Trump, aka 1st Woe, and application of Eph 6:12.

"So, God is protecting those in the “place of safety.” They’re still living at this time, and any Laodiceans that are still living at this time?
They are protected as well from this terrible Fifth Trump.
Revelation 9:5 “And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.”
Now, I want to say something. I don’t have a lot of time here.
We always used to think this was some world war at some time, and there are going to be nuclear wars, and all of this and, oh, this is showing helicopters, and tanks, and missiles, and that was a bunch of garbage!
It didn’t show that at all. Do you know what’s happening here?
      This is what is happening.
The two witnesses have totally exposed Satan and his demons! The entire world has seen his kingdoms come down. The physical world is in shambles, and Satan has no more reason to stay hidden.
Now, he is going to take in this Fifth Trump revenge against man, and if he could he’d kill everybody to stop God’s Plan!
But that’s why God says in the Trump: “You can not kill man, and don’t hurt the earth any more. I’ve had it with you, Satan,” and what we’re seeing here is Satan, and all the demons, becoming visible to mankind.
Have you ever seen these alien movies with these big weird looking aliens whipping around?
      What are they always doing?
They are always chasing mankind, aren’t they?
Duh! I wonder who makes these movies! Who inspires these movies?
You’re seeing the future, my friends!................”

      To be continued…

      John

    2. Continuing…and this may benefit BillW as well as you, Anon...and the 2nd Woe is also involving angels, but time will tell...

“……………For five months, Satan and all of the demons, these weird, grotesque, weird things are going to be able to chase mankind around this earth!
For five months, they’re going to hide in their houses. They’re going to hide, because these things can sting them somehow, and it hurts.
See, the people of the earth are also being prepared very quickly for what’s coming, and they’re going to know Satan very, very well with this.
When they get into that millennial period they’re going to rejoice, because they’ve just been messed around with for five months with Satan!
Look at what he does here!
6 “And in those days shall men...”
And it doesn’t mean angel here. It means: men shall…
“...seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.”
So, God has a dual purpose.
He’s allowing Satan to run around and do this.
He’s also really witnessing and backing up the two witnesses. They’ve already told men this was going to happen, and this is happening!
Revelation 9:7 “And the shapes of the locusts were...”
Or, these weird, grotesque, demons were…
“...like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.”
8 “And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.”
Now, you’ve never seen one of these, but everyone is seeing them, then. They are visible! They are coming after them.
9 “And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings...”
      They have wings too:
“...was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.”
10 “And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men...”
      Mankind
      “...five months.”
      Can you imagine this ordeal?
      This is why we’re remembering.
This is why we have the memorial of the blowing of the Trumpets!
11 “And they had a king over them,…”
      Over all of these things.
“…which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.”
In Greek his name is and you look in the margin reference: a “destroyer!” It’s Satan! Satan, see?
He was given this key. He was able to open this thing up so the people could see, “now,” who he was and all of his demons with him.
Now, that was the First Woe. Can you imagine anything like that?
      It would be horrible!..."

But, will the reality of that First Woe be similar to this portion written above?

      Time will tell...

      John

  6. NOBODY Knows!!!

Even Herbert W. Armstrong did not know exactly when the second coming of Jesus Christ and the end of this present evil age would be. God simply never revealed the exact time to HWA, and HWA was simply unable to figure it out on his own. HWA's entire religious career as leader of the Radio/Worldwide Church of God could be described as 52 years of wrong prophetic guesses from 1933 to 1986. Also, note that HWA died on January 16, 1986, about 39 years ago. So, it has now been over 90 years of guessing and waiting. Of course, some of the events that HWA expected to occur could still happen.

The wiser WCG splinter groups are careful not to be pinned down to exact prophetic dates, because they know very well that they too will be proven wrong if they do it. Again, God has not revealed the exact date to them, and they cannot figure it out on their own.

The foolish self-proclaimed “prophets” like Gerald Flurry and David Pack continue to lie and steal with reckless abandon. They not only cannot guess right, but they cannot even behave properly.

When people come up with dates for the second coming of Jesus Christ and the end of this present evil age, rather than taking them too seriously, I now tend to view them as most likely just more liars and thieves. Perhaps nobody ever taught these wicked guessers how evil it is to make up wrong prophetic guesses and proclaim them in God's name.

Here are the best answers so far:

    1. Someone reportedly said that those who set prophetic dates will simply continue to be wrong and will make their followers who profess to be Christians appear to be foolish. Furthermore, those who persist in setting dates will in the end probably set a date that is too late.

    2. One worthy of remembrance has said that, for each individual, the end of the world is when you die. That has actually happened quite regularly and reliably over the past 2,000 years, usually in about 70 years, more or less, from the date of each person's birth.

    3. In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus did say to beware of false prophets. They only do bad things, not good.

  7. In COGland, everything is a sign of the end times, with the possible exception of Republican victory in an election cycle, which to them constitutes a delay to allow more time for the work to get done. Wonder how they are dealing with the obvious exception to that "rule".

    1. Yes, their leadership and most of them are closet Republicans. They could care less about the character of their "conservative leader" in their present day, but want to preach to you about a past king of judah or king of judah that did evil in the sight of the Lord. Honestly, they should just actually vote Republican and wear their buttons to service.

  8. You know I happen to stumble across an old Glen Gilchrist sermon from the LCG back in 2005 and he was saying that he and the ministry was expecting something big to happen in prophecy in 2017. And I''m thinking what in the world happened in 2017 that was prophetic? Then I was thinking "Oh, this is when Mr. Meredith was saying in the next five to ten years"....
