Garner Ted On New Years Eve 1967

Garner Ted Armstrong loved to be at important events it appears, such as the previously posted Apollo 11 moon launch.

Here is a clip, narrated by famous Basketball  Hall of Fame sports announcer Chick Hearn, from the first opening night of the Los Angeles Forum.  At that time, the Forum was considered to be the most elite basketball arena in the world.

In the film, there are some opening shots of some of the famous celebrities who came out for the grand opening, including Lorne Greene, who at that time was the centerpiece of the "Cartwright Family" on the very popular television series called "Bonanza".

And surprise!... guess who else is coming through the special celebrity door at the SEVEN SECOND mark of the video... no less than Garner Ted Armstrong himself, along with his wife Shirley!

I did check on whether or not this was a Friday night event, but no, this was a New Years Eve opening, and December 31st of 1967 fell on a Sunday. I checked as I have heard rumored , that at other times, GTA did attend Laker games on Friday nights on occasion.

Anyway, whether it was getting to witness the moon launch or the opening of the Los Angeles forum, or having your own personal jet, or the Czar's silverware, ad nauseam, it was all YOUR HARD EARNED TITHE MONEY, hard at work for the preaching of the Gospel!

  1. One of the first indicators that perhaps I was not going to be “in with the in crowd” at AC was that basketball somehow had never really appealed to me. Didn’t really play it except when I had to in PE class, and skipped most of the student Saturday night games.

However, the Forum in Inglewood was the site of some memorable concerts for me. I recall seeing ZZ Top there, Aerosmith, Elvin Bishop, Peter Frampton, and there were probably others. Funny thing. As Herbie always told Dorothy about their Friday night dancing escapades, my friends and I didn’t have to worry about seeing any church people there, because they’d never be at a hard rock concert. I did draw the line at going to concerts on the sabbath though, and so gave away some tickets to a Friday night Grand Funk concert.

  2. Why did GTA's wife put up with all his running around? She liked the fame? The salary? The lifestyle?

    1. Obviously no one who didn’t know her personally could say why she ACTUALLY stayed, but leaving a bad husband is really difficult for many women even today, and there isn’t nearly the amount of stigma or fear of losing your children that there used to be. I highly doubt that fame and lifestyle were the primary factors for her to stay in such an unhappy marriage.

  3. Look Lorne Green might be a bonanza star for one generation.

For the other he is commander "adama" leading the 12 tribes to their destination 13th tribe on earth.

(remember original 13 us states number including ephraim and mannasah)

Looking from my perspective the two mentioned VIP's would in 1978 ( start of gallactica series) be proponents of the same ideology.
