In this episode Sam Harris discusses the Heaven's Gate suicide cult and argues that we all have something important to learn from them about the power of belief.
The Exit Interviews
Marshall Applewhite's Exit Interview
"It's not our fault. We have been here, We have made ourselves known. We have held meetings. We have put out information. Articles that have been printed. Major newspapers that have gone world over for many years for the time we have been here. We have been ignored. ....we understand why we have been called that when someone has not been given the knowledge to see us for who we are and recognize what we can offer for you..."

Everyone believes something.
Good to see you back Dennis.

This Corona thing is a great testimony about belief. Whether it will be a major thing or not, (in historical terms) remains to be seen, but the reality of the event is abundantly clear in that the massed believe that it indeed is a major thing. The human life cost may be perhaps nominal, but the economy is taking a major hit, as is the stock market, with trillions of dollars now evaporated.
All from belief!
Is there really that much difference between one group's obsession with the Hale-Bopp comet and another group's obsession with the phases of the Moon? Both groups teach that our destiny is to ascend to an evolutionary level above human. Both groups as a practical matter discourage members from forming truly genuine relationships with non-members. Do told his flock that it was time to flee to the ship coming with the comet, and the ACOGs promise that they will tell us when it is time to flee to the Place of Safety.
Yes, the two cults are very different. Except when they aren't.
Meanwhile you believe everything you type and share is worthwhile. Talk is cheap. Words upon words.
Is your God your own opinion ?
Belief should be cautious. It becomes dangerous for you personally if you allow others to define how you must believe, and what your actions must be if you "really" believe. One example of this defining would be that if you believe in God you must participate in "common".

I wrote not one word of the posting. I found their to be significant parallels in what Sam Harris between the Heaven's Gate Cult and their perspectives and the more radical, guru lead Churches of God to be significant and worth the time to explore. Thank you for your smug and shallow participation.
My comments not aimed at you Dennis C Diehl at all.
