Gerald Flurry’s Masterclass in Irony: Preaching Forgiveness While Enforcing Family Exile

Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection do not make any of us “worthy” in the sense of earning God’s favor through our own effort. Scripture is blunt: every human being is a sinner who falls short (Romans 3:23). None is righteous on their own (Romans 3:10). Our righteousness is like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).
What the cross and empty tomb do accomplish is far better. God made the sinless Christ to be sin for us so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). While we were still sinners, Christ died for us; we are justified by His blood (Romans 5:8-9). Salvation is by grace through faith—not of ourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works (Ephesians 2:8-9). The believer’s standing is Christ’s perfect righteousness credited to them, not something they must continually earn or maintain by institutional loyalty, endless self-improvement, or returning to a particular group. Philippians 3:9 puts it plainly: not a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ.  Colossians 1:12 even uses language of being “qualified” or “made meet” to share in the inheritance—not because we worked harder, but because the Father has already done it through the Son. This is finished work. It is not a treadmill of perpetual proving.Gerald Flurry’s brand-new book, The Father’s Love, whose introduction (published in the September 2026 Philadelphia Trumpet) takes Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15 and turns it into an urgent appeal to “God’s prodigal sons”—specifically those Flurry labels Laodiceans who have left his Philadelphia Church of God. Flurry correctly notes that the father in the parable represents God the Father. The younger son demands his inheritance, leaves, squanders everything, and finally “comes to himself.” He returns rehearsing a speech of unworthiness: “I am no more worthy to be called thy son.” The father sees him from a great way off, runs, embraces, kisses, and restores him completely—best robe, ring, shoes, fatted calf—without a single lecture. Flurry writes movingly of the father’s joy and of heaven’s rejoicing over one sinner who repents. He insists God is waiting with open arms for anyone who leaves “His Church” and returns in repentance. He also addresses the older brother, urging faithful members to share the father’s heart. All of that is true to the text of Luke 15. The irony is so thick you could cut it with a knife.  For roughly two decades, Gerald Flurry has enforced a strict no-contact policy that requires PCG members to completely sever relationships with former members and anyone deemed “Laodicean”—including their own parents, children, siblings, and closest friends—except in very narrow cases involving an unconverted spouse who is “pleased to dwell,” or you are one of the PCG elite where this rule has never applied. In a December 2005 Pastor General’s Report and subsequent sermons, Flurry clarified that partial contact (“as long as religion is not discussed”) is not forbidden, but later he  said the cut-off is to be total. He has described the pain this causes as useful: God wants the “sting” of shunning to drive people back. Former members and their families have documented years of silence, broken marriages, children cut off from grandparents, and in at least one tragic case a daughter’s body returned only after years of enforced separation. So the same organization that has systematically broken families in the name of “protecting the Church” is now publishing a book that celebrates a father who runs to the returning son and refuses even to let him finish his speech of unworthiness. Flurry tells “prodigals” that the Father is watching the horizon. Meanwhile, his own policy has instructed loyal members to keep those same people firmly off the horizon. The parable’s father never demanded the son rejoin a specific human organization or submit to a particular man’s government before the embrace. He simply saw repentance and rejoiced. Flurry’s version quietly inserts an extra condition: return to this church, accept this authority structure, and then the kisses and the feast can begin. That is not the father’s heart in Luke 15. That is institutional control dressed up in biblical language. True worthiness before God is not restored by crawling back into any human group. It was secured once for all at the cross and confirmed by the resurrection. Believers already stand clothed in Christ’s righteousness. They do not have to keep working to become worthy; they already are declared so by grace through faith. Any teaching that turns the father’s open arms into a recruitment tool for a particular organization has missed the point of the parable—and of the gospel itself. Flurry’s book may move some readers with its description of divine compassion. The lived history of the Philadelphia Church of God under his leadership tells a very different story about how that compassion has actually been practiced toward those who walked away. The contrast is not subtle. It is the definition of irony.

The irony indeed. Salvation is truly a gift. Not earned. The believers are justified by what the law could never do. Simple. Was written and plainly stated in scripture all the time, yet myself and many others never saw it. The church was in the way. We were indeed burdened by do’s and don’ts. Trying to be perfect by ‘working out’ our own salvation, by works. Didn’t work for me and caused enormous stresses. How I see His yoke His burden is light and easy, and taking this yoke this burden will give us rest. With humility and gentleness. The Armstrong model placed real burdens and yokes upon as all. What a travesty. One can only hope those caught up within the Flurry cult will awaken and leave and find real rest. Good post here on Banned.

The Father's Love book by Gerald Flurry

With “love” like Gerald's, you don't need hate. The cognitive dissonance (a famous Joey, Jr. term) is probably deliberately designed to make the heads of PCG members, and especially PCG ex-members, explode.

Gerald Flurry was always “disfellowshipping in God's family love.” Satan did not send little Gerald to play nice. Gerald Flurry is a lying, thieving, fraudster of the very worst sort. He always does all of his own outrageous evil in God's name.

Of course, there might be some people who will like what Gerald Flurry has to offer. For example, masochists. Do not forget about the masochists. You should always take into account the needs and wants of the masochists. Masochists might feel that it is well worth some tithe and offering bucks to get the sort of extreme mental and spiritual abuse that only Satan's favorite false prophet Gerald Flurry can give to them.

“The Hypocrite's Handbook to the Prodigal Son: Now Available Free from the Trumpet”

Just a little FYI (For Your Information):

This reminds me of someone (a former WCG member) who once said something like, “Never touch anything that says FREE. FREE cost me $60,000.00. I humbly submit this so you will remember it.”

Flurry's Love directly caused 60% of divorcees in his Cult and statistically impossible numbers of female deaths way before their age....and possibly men too... (at least during Covid).

stay away from that Cult..... Unless you have children their. Then by all means breach THEIR Rules.

How can an alcoholic live s long as he has?

Flurry's parents gave him the wrong first name. They should have named him Dick.

The city of Edmond will soon have a small, intimate concert venue, and some lucky manufacturer will be able to obtain a nice jet for pennies on the dollar.

I may be wrong, but when the recession kicks in, I just don't see PCG surviving it.

I've noticed this ploy over the years. Often, when a ACOG morally compromises on some point, they slap the word "love" on the teaching. It's like putting a chocolate coating a poison pill.

2000 years of going further and further off track has resulted in Gerald Flurry.

For one of the first times I completely agree with you Nck. I still have family there who won’t speak to me, and I’ve completely written them off. My life is great, unfortunately for them I’ve heard they are miserable and lonely. It’s incredible how powerful the fear is in that organization. Everyone needs to stay away, and those still in need to break their made up rules if they ever want to find some form of happiness.

A NEW BOOK FROM KIING GERRY

Gerald Flurry, or rather, his ghost writher Joel Hilliker has come out with a new book
The man who calls himself the “King of Israel” and known by his ex followers as “That FALSE Prophet”.
The tyrant leader of the Philadelphia Church of God (PCG) headquartered In Edmond OK.
Has come out with a new book. “The Father’s Love”. It has been called “The Hypocrite’s Handbook to the Prodigal Son”

This is an attempt for the “church” to get more money. An attempt to woo back ex members.
So many have left or been put out that the ROYAL family of KING Gerry cannot continue their opulent lifestyles. It’s so bad that they might even have to sell the PJ, the private jet they fly around in.

Membership and income is PLUNGING and as KING Gerry’s health continues to deteriorate, his son Prince Stevie is panicking. Will he continue the mad rantings of the old man or disavow them in an effort to stop the loss of money. Either way it’s a lose, lose situation for him.

“Gerald Flurry’s Masterclass in Irony: Preaching Forgiveness While Enforcing Family Exile”

It is also a Masterclass in HYPOCRISY: Pretending to LOVE while they actually HATE.

Little by little we are seeing Gerald's name dissappearing from the Trumpet website. The self proclaimed Apostle is reduced to a short little article that makes an appearance every two weeks. If hes lucky he churns out a booklet in time for the Feast. Members must be starting to wonder if he truly is being used by God. I mean, the end times are supposedly here and the best God can do is send a guy like Gerald Flurry to warn the world with his little books and booklets. Cute.

SCORE: Satan: 1, PCG Members: 0

The really wild thing about it all is that Satan's FALSE PROPHET Gerald R. Flurry has somehow managed to make even the Devil's APOSTATE Joseph W. Tkach, Sr. appear to have been downright reasonable and decent and loving compared to little Gerald the cruel, hate-filled, family-wrecking, perverter of all good.

Some people who thought that they were so brave and spiritual to reject the APOSTATE Tkaches' open doctrinal changes of January 1995 and walk away from the WCG/GCI, just walked right into Satan's waiting PCG trap and the clutches of his FALSE PROPHET Gerald Flurry. Now, these same people do not dare to speak the truth, and feel powerless to escape from the PCG. They vastly underestimated the power of Satan to deceive them and to control them, and Satan clearly outwitted them.

Some PCG members might be getting tired of always raging away like a bunch of demoniacs about all the “evil Laodiceans” while it is actually Gerald Flurry who is evil and has wrecked their religion, their families, and their lives.

I have not read this book. But I get the impression that this is Gerald Flurry's final book (he's 91) - and he may have written it while reflecting over the tough tones he's taken at other times in his ministry, in hopes this is how he wants to be remembered.

I recall Rod Meredith admitting to one interviewer he "mellowed" in his later years with LCG. Could that be what Flurry's book is about?

None of GF’s New Book Is Love:

The Father’s Love is not what its title claims. It is Gerald Flurry and PCG’s Council of Elders’ false teachings, dressed in the language of comfort while doing the opposite: controlling and exploiting brethren.

That is what this leadership is. They claim titles no one but themselves ever confirmed; i.e., Flurry as “God’s modern-day apostle,” Armstrong as “the end-time Elijah”–never tested against Scripture the way Acts 17:11 commands: “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

Like the Pharisees Christ condemned, this leadership never cared for God’s people. They cared for their own authority. “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). Christ’s woes fell on leaders like this–not on the people they misled–because they “shut up the kingdom of heaven against men” (Matthew 23:13).

Behind the “father’s love” language, the book says leaving the PCG means losing your salvation. It commands members to shame anyone who leaves. It uses nuclear war and “catastrophic curses” as fear tactics before a single doctrine is taught. It redefines loving God as loving the organization’s leadership. It tells members not to trust their own reasoning–only the ministry’s. It turns financial sacrifice into a measure of devotion. And it brands every other group “Laodicean,” claiming this one [PCG] alone is faithful.

None of it is love. “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear” (1 John 4:18). Real love does not require fear, secrecy, money, and shame to keep you close. This does. That is how you know whose [church] it really is. –Former PCG member

Hypocritical gaslighting pieces of trash. Are they going to atone and accept accountability for all of their abuses and atrocities by their ministers, especially by that Culpper prick? No. Are they going to allow families and friends to reconnect? No. They need money, their prestige and that plane. They hope discarded members come back for more control and abuse under the guise of God’s Love. The aren’t about love at all. Hope that PCG ship finally sinks.

Yep. I agree. Something I've always found strange about PCG, and some of the other COGlets as well, is how they delight at disfellowshipping and otherwise running off tithe-paying members. I've really marveled at this. PCG in particular has done a heroic job of shrinking their own revenue through this behavior. They were never that big to begin with, and I just can't understand how they could be so blind to the impact this behavior would have on income.

Anonymous said...

Heck! There are people who actually believe that those abuses are part of God's character, and/or restored truths! That is why they imitate them!

Raca to all of them!

Anonymous said...

So true. Why would a ‘church’ be so secretive about everything? In the book, the use of 2 Thessalonians chapter 3 for justification for ‘disfellowshipping’ is used completely out of the chapter’s context, as it is about idleness vs working. The shaming of such a person was due to the ‘bludger’ mindset of not working for a living (as the manner of some was) which was the definition of being ‘disorderly’. Any commentary explains this.

The meaning of “withdraw yourself from every brother that walks disorderly” in 2 Thes. 3:6 and “note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed” in 2 Thes. 3:14 have both been MISUSED in Flurry’s new book (PDF) and, as always, have been completely lifted out of context of the entire chapter to justify casting out a non-compliant member. Any commentary and even the bible subheading itself mentions it is dealing with idle people in Paul’s time who were not working for a living but being a burden on the church and a bad example for others and being busybodies. Verse 10 sums it up as, “If any would not work, neither shall he eat.” This has nothing to do with disagreeing with preached doctrine but always quoted in announcements for a person who is marked or disfellowshipped. It was a socioeconomic and behavioural issue.

It's called Derangement Syndrome, but in this case, it has nothing to do with POTUS.

You'd think that someone would get a clue that since they are not attracting new members, everytime they disfellowship someone, it means that there are fewer tithers left to carry the burden. So, disfellowshipping and shunning is a self-punishing offense!
