Since Christ was going to dwell with Israel and lead them personally by a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night, He would need His own tent. The people lived in tents and so would God as an “inhabitant” of the camp. Think of the last six chapters of Exodus as outlining the kind of tent (tabernacle) that He wanted for Himself.
