Are Current World Situations Scaring People Into Returning To Certain COG's As They Claim?

Gas shortages, Middle East turmoil, drought in the West, racial unrest, the dollar in upheaval, and idiots on both sides of the aisle in the U.S. political system, all make up the perfect scenario for latter-day doom and gloom preachers of the Church of God.  These are all sure signs of validation of their prophetic utterances.

These doom and gloom preachers are kicking into high gear right now trying to warn lazy and lukewarm COG members and ex-members to wake up and rejoin the one true faith (their version, of course).

On Facebook on some of the exCOG groups every once in a while someone pops up and asks if anyone else is having PTSD over world events in light of what we had been taught.

From Gerald Weston to Dave Pack, to Gerald Flurry, and on to Bob Thiel, these preachers of end-time malarky are all claiming they are gaining new members because of recent world events. They claim people are waking up and returning to the true faith. But are they? Would you return to these hotbeds of doctrinal heresy and abusive ministers and think your salvation is secure through them?

According to LCG, these troubles are bringing into the church former members and younger people who grew up in the church but left it.

Living Church of God

Rod McNair reported to Gerald Weston last week on his visit to the congregation in Knoxville, Tennessee, where there was a service in the morning and a Tomorrow’s World presentation in the afternoon. He was struck by how many were there in the morning whom he did not recognize from last time, including a number of individuals who were young people in WCG days, and have come back in the last few months or weeks.

Gerald Weston commented that the same activity is being seen elsewhere, with people also coming from other Church of God groups. He added that people seem to be recognizing the fact that the LCG is where God’s work is mainly being done.

This churning is not limited to the LCG, and the return of disenchanted young people who left the WCG decades ago is more likely driven by what they perceive to be the ‘signs of the times’. Church of God News

The International Dateline and the Sabbath: Straining at a gant and swallowing the camel...

It is amazing to watch the lengths some COG "leaders" go to defend their beliefs and "prove" that the Sabbath is required. Never fully studying about the Sabbath requirement for New Covenant followers, they rely fully upon COG publications written by a myriad of so-called educated leaders. Even then, certain men have decided that COG "proofs" have not gone far enough to suit their hyper-legalistic minds so they come up with even more bizarre scenarios and teachings.

Case in point, the International Dateline, and Sabbath-keeping.

The problem the COG has as a whole is that they have to deal with that pesky International Dateline which causes some people to keep sabbath on one day while in other parts of the world have yet to keep it or may have already done so. This causes a conundrum to a lot of diehard Sabbath-keepers who think the entire world must stop at the same time.

Never fear though, COG members and some "leaders" have an answer for everything. OzWitness, an Australian COG site has determined that the International Dateline is WRONG and is causing "true" Christians to keep Sabbath on the wrong day. So, they have come up with a new "dateline" to ensure that the entire world keeps sabbath at the same time.

OzWitness states:

The International dateline is not something that most of us have considered. Most of us have just taken for granted that we keep the Sabbath on the seventh day, as scripture requires. Those who travel across it though and those who live East of Jerusalem but West of the present dateline, may have wondered if the Bible has anything to say on this subject, so let’s examine the biblical evidence, and then come to our own conclusion.

"Coming to our own conclusion" is the reason the COG is in such a horrendous mess. With hundreds and hundreds of bloviating men making all kinds of idiotic proclamations, no one, and mean NO ONE, has any idea what the COG even stands for anymore.

Yellow highlights are mine, colored word highlights are the original author's:

We know that God has provided the instruction and examples in the Bible for the month and the year and He would not fail to provide the needed information on the dateline, because the fact is that, though many people have not thought about this, there has to be one somewhere – a definite line on the earth where God’s day begins. Any conclusions drawn without including that vital dateline must be invalid!

No well-researched religious scholar, no Jewish rabbi or theologian, no mathematician, no scientist, and not even Arab geographer Abulfeda and explorer Magellan were/are as correct as a lay COG member.

This is simply because the earth rotates. If we travel East, against the rotation, the day is shorter as the sun seems to come towards us, and sunset is earlier. If we travel West, with the sun, the days are longer than 24 hours. Of course, without knowing where the true dateline is, those of us who live East of Jerusalem, but West of the present International Date Line, do not securely know when to keep the annual Holy Days which Jesus Christ kept.

But a COG member sure does!

Also, we are concerned to make sure we keep the seventh day Holy. Genesis 2:3, ‘And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.’ We need to keep a tight check on the days, and we know that at the time of Jesus the Jews were keeping the correct day. Jesus vouched for that by His agreement of both the Sabbath and Holy Days back then. Since then, the Romans drove many Jews from the ‘Holy Land’ in a great diaspora, but, no matter where they went, East or West, they carried the same day with them, and no matter where they ended up, today most are in agreement about which day is the 7th, from Hong Kong, to Cape town, to San Francisco.

They did this without any reference to an international dateline, because travel back then was slow. They had no watches and they would not have noticed that the day was either a little longer or shorter, depending on whether they were moving West or East. Actually, the dateline had not been invented then anyway, it only came about after men began to circumnavigate the earth in ships, and depending on which way they went, they either seemed to ‘lose’ or ‘gain’ a day against the calendar they started out from. When the Sabbath was restored at Sinai, the Israelites began to keep it, though they were not in Israel, and later Daniel kept the Sabbath in Babylon, as did Ezekiel and Ezra, though they started it long before it commenced in Jerusalem. Paul travelled far to the West and kept the same Sabbath, but much later than those at Jerusalem. Obviously then, there is no rule that we should keep the identical time with Jerusalem.

So, the fact is that, no matter which way the Jews travelled from Jerusalem, even eventually as far as America, West, or China East, they retained the knowledge of the true Sabbath, even though much later, disagreements arose amongst their scholars, which have not changed the majority of Jewish practice, and to this day the vast majority of Jews worldwide keep the Sabbath on the same date.

So if the knowledge of the "true" Sabbath and the fact that Jews all observe Sabbath, then what is ht issue?

Well, this is the Church of God and after all, it is ALL KNOWING on EVERYTHING imaginable.

So, why is it that among some Christian 7th Day Sabbath keepers, there is some confusion about which day is the seventh? Well, these days we travel by air and it is not uncommon to cross half the world in 24 hours. It then becomes very noticeable that you have ‘lost’ or ‘gained time’, and the world has had to agree on the dateline, the longitude East or West of the prime meridian which was placed at Greenwich, England, where a new calendar day begins.

Because England was the dominant seafaring nation when this occurred, all longitudinal lines are based on Greenwich, as 0 degrees, and, as a result, the dateline was set at 180 degrees East, on a great longitudinal circle that encompasses the globe (there are 360 degrees in whole) exactly on the opposite side of the earth from Greenwich. That was where each new day would start, at twelve midnight, and the day would progress West around the earth.

This proved very convenient, because 180 degrees East, is over the Pacific Ocean, the largest and emptiest body of water on the planet. Although they bent the line a little to avoid one or two islands, it avoids all land, which is the third vital requirement to avoid confusion. Imagine if the dateline went over land. It could happen that people on one side of a street were keeping Friday, and those on the other, Saturday, an impossible situation, so the choice seemed logical enough.

This positioning of the start of the day in the Pacific Ocean, upsets some Christians though, because of the scriptural belief that Jerusalem is the centre of the world, Ezekiel 5:5, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her.’ And 38:12, ‘To take plunder, and to carry off spoil; to turn your hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, who have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.’ And that the law must go forth from Zion, Isaiah 2:3, ‘And many people shall go and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.’

This is quite true, for all our attention is centred on Jerusalem, and observations from there with regard to calendar issues, and the Biblical dateline must include this principle, but then, too early conclusions, such as, ‘those to the East cannot start the Sabbath until it has started in Jerusalem’, have been drawn, because certain scriptures are not recognised or considered.

Men have often felt the need to introduce their own ideas and traditions, without biblical confirmation; witness the disagreements of the obscure Jewish sages about the dateline. Jesus condemned that approach, and told us to look at scripture. Without those scriptures, some have suggested that Jerusalem should be the dateline. This is totally impossible because that would mean half the city keeping one day, and half the next. Others have suggested a boundary of Israel at Euphrates. That suggestion is equally impractical, as a look at the map will prove, for such a line would also cut through Africa and Asia, once again providing similar problems in many more areas of the world, and there are no dateline scriptures to back this suggestion.

When the prime meridian is redrawn from Greenwich, and based upon Jerusalem, and then projected around the globe, it forms one great circle, and once past the poles becomes 180 degrees East or West of Jerusalem right over the waters of the Pacific, when Jerusalem is 0 degrees. This, I believe, is what God is describing in Job 26:10, as a statute, which actually determines the biblical International Date Line. Thus, that statute (a law which will be active in the millennium) directly links Jerusalem to the circle which now marks out the division between light and darkness, the beginning of God’s days, fulfilling the requirement in Isaiah 2:3, that the law will go forth from Zion, or Jerusalem. ‘And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.’

In fact, as we have seen, we are told that God created the dateline first, in Genesis 1:4, and then later positioned Jerusalem on that line (when it is extended around the globe). How wonderful and awesome are His far sighted powers!

So what is the solution?

He ensured this by placing Jerusalem directly opposite what seems to be the biblical international dateline, on a great circle which goes right around the globe, actually appearing as the longitude 144.8 degrees West today, ( Jerusalem is now 35.2 degrees East of the prime meridian at Greenwich, so +180 degrees = 144.8 degrees West).

The New COG dateline, conveniently skirting Alaska.

This line then lies 35.2167 degrees East of the present international dateline (which has been bent to avoid islands) right through the largely empty Pacific Ocean, but crosses Alaska unless, as a boundary, it is bent to skirt its shores.

In this way, even New Zealand and Australia share most of the Sabbath with Jerusalem, as does Europe and even the Americas, and the problem of the position of the true international dateline, which cannot be over land, could be solved (Genesis 1:4) while fulfilling the statute of Job 26:10.

You can read the rest of this here: The Biblical International Date Line

There are hundreds of other sites by non-COG people who call the International Dateline, pagan, satanic, etc., so this is not really something new. Conspiracy theories keep religion alive, especially for Sabbath-Keepers/Messianic Jews/Yahwehists and others.

For all of these groups, the emphasis is upon days and never upon that inconvenient dude that beckons for them to follow him. Following the letter of the law is more important than walking in freedom.

Is there really a Church of God "fellowship"?

I was sent this by a person today inquiring if the Churches of God were actually a "fellowship"?

This is in response to a newsletter that Craig White sends out:

Notice that Vic Kubik uses the term “Church of God fellowship” in the 8th paragraph. This is similar to the term “Church of God community” that some use (including me).

What it means is that many of the Church of God groups are recognised as part of the Body of Christ and it is well and truly fine for us to visit and network with the other groups. It is against UCG policy to work against that or prevent it. We are not a cult nor do we believe we are the only true Church.

The other day Victor Kubik posted a letter where he talked about fake news and how UCG was the source of real truth since they have the Logos as their ultimate source and he referred to

This is in response to this comment by Kubik.

For the first time since the research has been conducted, the quantitative results from the report
showed that media was viewed as both “incompetent” and “unethical.” A majority (59 percent)
believe that journalists are “purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are
false.”

The outcome? “This is the era of information bankruptcy,” declares the report. “The global
infodemic has driven trust in all news sources to record lows.”

It’s important to note that these numbers represent journalists and media on both ends of the
spectrum—liberal and conservative. And government doesn’t fare any better.

What is disturbing about this for us in the Church of God fellowship? Follow-up research
conducted a few weeks ago found that a majority (57 percent) of Americans interviewed noted
that divisiveness is so extreme that they believe the United States “is in the midst of a cold civil
war.”

No wonder that President Joe Biden delivered an inaugural message on Jan. 20 that called for
calmness, unity and a lowering of political temperatures. Sadly, in the weeks that have followed,
fresh rancor and divisiveness have reared up again on both sides.
How should we in the Church of God respond?

Most people I have spoken to said this is not the case that COG groups form a fellowship. While there may be a few that do let ministers from other groups speak on occasion, they are not bound in bonds of fellowship in belief or governance.

There particularly are no bonds of fellowship with personality cults led by men such as Dave Pack, Gerald Flurry, Bob Thiel, or Ron Weinland. These charlatans are at enmity with other COG's due to their narcissistic arrogance, their dreams, outlandish visions, absurd prophecies, and perverted visions of governance. None of these men allow their ministers to speak in other groups and most certainly will NOT allow any minister from another COG's speak. Can you imagine crackpot Bob Thiel allowing Gerald Weston to speak in his group?

Even those that share ministers on occasion are NOT in bonds of fellowship. They all have different doctrines and beliefs that prevent true unity and true bonds of fellowship.

Certain Churches of God love to mock other Christians and make fun of how many groups there are, but they are just as broken and fractured as the ones they mock.

UCG: Don't Go To The Radicalized News Sources But Come To Us Because We Have The Real Truth. We Have The Logos!

Those fun boys in Cincinnati are back letting us know that they are the best source for unbiased news that there could possibly be! With their claim that 57% of Americans distrust the news, they want you to know that they are the best source of news you could ever possibly need.

It’s important to note that these numbers represent journalists and media on both ends of the spectrum—liberal and conservative. And government doesn’t fare any better.

What is disturbing about this for us in the Church of God fellowship? Follow-up research conducted a few weeks ago found that a majority (57 percent) of Americans interviewed noted that divisiveness is so extreme that they believe the United States “is in the midst of a cold civil war.”

Then the boys say this:

Consider these parallels: even before he was president, Abraham Lincoln saw similar issues. Back in 1858, he declared: “If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could then better judge what to do, and how to do it” (Lincoln’s emphasis). When he spoke this, the United States was bitterly divided. He famously then paraphrased the words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 12:25: “a house divided against itself cannot stand.”

Today, this is more important than ever. In this current crisis of mistrust, we need to recognize that people on both sides have become radicalized.

As Lincoln stated, “what to do and how to do it” are critical. In this world where credible, reliable and trustworthy information is all but lost, where can people turn for real truth?

Hmm...let me guess...just where are people to turn to for real truth? Hmmm...I wonder where that could possibly be?

The biblical answer is found in John 17:17: “your word is truth” (English Standard Version, emphasis added throughout).

Imagine that, the "truth" found in a Church of God, particularly the United Church of God. Who knew!

Remember, these are the same guys who plotted and schemed, behind the scenes, while still employed as ministers of the Worldwide Church of God. This went on for many months with them meeting in the SOG apartments and off-campus to figure out how they could start a new church, take as many people as possible to fund a new organization that would keep them all employed as ministers. And while they did this they were actively kicking out WCG members left and right who disagreed with the changes. Depending on how well they liked you and if they thought you had a lot of money, they would then pass on to these people to wait and a new church would be formed and they could join it.

Yes, these are the men now asking you to trust them with the "truth".

Never mind that though, the boys want you to imagine that they answer to a higher power.

But consider this. There is a certain Greek word that refers to vocabulary. The phrase for vocabulary that is simply translated “word” in English is lexi (from which we get lexicon).

But lexi is not the Greek word that is in the inspired prayer from Jesus to God in John 17:17. This is a critical point: Jesus uses the Greek word logos—the verse actually reads: “your logos [Word] is truth.”

Why is that Greek word logos important? Beginning a few hundred years before the coming of Jesus as the Messiah, many philosophers claimed and used the Greek logos to refer to the ability to think, as a means to persuade, as reasoned discourse, as the difference between humans and beasts. Logos was the center of many teachings.

I guess Logos is as good a word as Jesus, or getter actually. UCG, like most COG's do not mention Jesus that much. Its law, law, law. Or, law, tithe, government, hoy days, and a little Jesus

If we now revisit the entire prayer of Jesus in John 17:17, we then see Jesus praying for us today! “Sanctify them [set apart for holy service] in the truth; your word [logos] is truth” (ESV). This Logos—Jesus Christ as the Word—must be living within us (Ephesians 3:17).

How can Jesus be living in the COG when the church has basically ignored the dude for decades? These are the same men who were embarrassed to even say the name Jesus for many years. Today it is cool for the more liberal COG's to say the name Jesus more as it makes them think they are appealing to real Christians in the world.

Think on this: if we indeed are to fulfill our personal individual mission of being lights to this darkened world (Matthew 5:14), a world darkened by mistrust, we must fully know, understand and be living the precious truths that we hold. We must be anchored in faith and active in trust! People in the world should see that Word of truth openly living in us.

As we approach the Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread, I call upon each one of us to revisit the spiritual trunk of the tree and hold it fast. A most crucial part of this trunk of the tree is the precious plan of God, highlighted by the knowledge and application of the Holy Days.

Jesus, plus the holy days. That's how it works. In the COG it is always a "+" god that needs to be affirmed. Something always needs to be done to placate the angry god they actually follow.

Do we consider that this Word, this Logos spoken of by John, who is today our Elder Brother who stands ready to help us, is the One who both gave the Holy Days we observe and also lives in their meaning? Does the understanding of these Holy Days live and manifest itself in our daily lives?

It is always important to do something to make the angry god happy. Do a lot of works and God will be pleased and then it may drop a few spoonfuls of grace upon you. The Jewish holiday s were vital to the identity and growth of the Children of Isreal to gain their identity. These laws were to them alone and not for anyone around them. Contrast that with what most Christians understand, that with Jesus, grace overwhelms everyone and everything, not just a certain group of people.

But then again, this is a COG and the law must reign supreme. The Cincinnati boys want their members to pray about their message during the upcoming holiday instead of placing their focus upon that dude that embarrassed them. the dude who can give them rest, comfort, and distress them from the rigamarole of everyday life.

Allow me to address one more issue: as we approach the upcoming Holy Days, I would also ask you to consider and pray about the fact that the message of the Church must endure and prevail in this turbulent environment of mistrust. We don’t speak for the Left or Right—we openly declare the reality of the coming Kingdom of God! We contrast the truth of the Bible with the events of the day, “crying aloud” (Isaiah 58:1) and proclaiming a warning message to repent of national and personal sins.

One of the COG's biggest fear tacts was to constantly whine about a "famine of the word". For two millennia there have been Christians who have fought and died to preserve the word they claim as too important to keep let die.  These martyrs who died knowing the truth they found never once believed that it was going to disappear at some point in time. Their God was more powerful than that. Not the god of the COG's though. It was so impotent that it let its message disappear for 1,800 years till Herbert Armstrong discovered it in a public library.

We should solemnly consider that the Bible warns of a coming time of spiritual famine, “of hearing the words of the LORD” (Amos 8:11). That time is not yet, but in a time when research confirms that media and government leaders are “purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false,” we must double down in prayerful vigilance, holding fast to the spiritual trunk of the tree.

For decades the COG has misled people with what they call the "truth". A truth that many of them don't even actually believe because that truth needs to focus upon Jesus and that just pisses them off. The COG in 2021 places more emphasis upon sacred rocks, double blessings, dreams, and visions of apocalypse as the god they look to than it does at any time upon Jesus and what Christianity knows and understands.  Some day the COG might catch up to that understanding.

From Personal from the President Victor Kubik
