COG Veritas: COGWA, UCG, Regional Pastors, Inappropriate emails, Coverups, No Accountability (Part 1)

It is not every day that women in the Church of God movement publicly speak their minds and expose deeply concerning issues in the church, but here we are with one brave woman. This apparently short-circuits the power-structure neurons in certain COG ministers’ brains—neurons that, one suspects, were never wired for much beyond “submit  to everyting I say, do not question me, and bring the casserole.”

After all, women in the Churches of God are expected to remember their place and never speak out against the ministerial overlords who micromanage them. These men, if given half a chance, would prefer women stay in the kitchen making sandwiches or cleaning the house rather than becoming outspoken confronting issues. Be the perfect helpmeet and walk three steps behind your husband. Thankfully, those days are swiftly coming to an end across the COG groups—much to the visible distress of men who once preached freedom from “Babylonian hierarchy” while quietly building their own.

This is particularly true in the UCG and COGWA empires—two sister organizations that themselves were born in rebellion, complete with passionate speeches about corrupt leadership and the urgent need for accountability. Now, private emails and a Facebook group exposing them are now circulating. How inconvenient.

What is the Purpose of COG Veritas?

COG Veritas will be a series of articles from interviews with the brethren of the Sabbath-Keeping churches.    The information & truth has been largely hidden from the congregations for a very specific purpose.

Have you ever wondered why those that speak the truth are attacked?   Think of men ranging from Charlie Kirk to Jordan Peterson or Jesus Christ.   These men are savagely attacked or killed when they speak from a place of principle and truth.

The Truth Threatens False Power.   The Truth Threatens those that gained powered through politics and lies.    This has happened in the Sabbath keeping churches.   Those in society that Threaten this power are sometimes killed.   In the COG world, those that speak the truth are often Disfellowshipped.   It is the same spirit.

COG Veritas is meant to share the truth about events that have been largely hidden, so that the MEMBERS can make an informed decision about who to trust for Spiritual Leadership.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The overlords will first attempt to control this woman and shut her down. Then they will deny any culpability in the issues raised. Covering up scandals has long been an important part of the Church of God movement—practiced with the same enthusiasm once reserved for criticizing the previous administration. Look at how well it worked—until the internet opened the floodgates and the underhandedness and lack of accountability were thrust into the limelight. Suddenly the same men who once thundered about “transparency” discovered that transparency is delightful only when applied to someone else.

Another roadblock is the idea of members offering solutions to the churches’ issues. COG members have never had a real voice in the operations of the church, in any aspect. In fact, in all COG groups that are registered as corporations, the ONLY members are the Board and no one else. Democracy is apparently a fine concept—until the congregation starts asking awkward questions about their shepherds.

COGWA states this as the reason for the organization of the church:

The Bible teaches that the Church of God is a spiritual body of believers led by God’s Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; Ephesians 4:3-5; Romans 8:9, 16). Each member has a part to play in the work of the Church, as do the parts of the human body (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). As we yield to God’s divine leadership, we collectively grow “into a holy temple in the Lord” (Ephesians 2:21).

The Bible also teaches that Jesus Christ is the Head of His Church; and as the spiritual leader, He guides and directs His Church throughout all ages (Colossians 1:18). He has also provided human leadership for the Church since the time He walked the earth. “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-13).

The leadership of Christ and the teachable attitude of the ministry and membership are essential to accomplish the preaching of the gospel, caring for congregations and general running of the Church.

This all sounds fine in a perfect world—or at least in the brochure. But what happens when one of the church leaders goes astray and causes serious issues? Who holds anyone accountable? The chairman? The board? Regional directors or regional managers? The local ministers? Or the members holding their ministers accountable?

In almost every single instance, accountability is not something members are allowed to exercise toward those over them. They are told to submit and shut up, or they will be disfellowshipped—the COG equivalent of duct tape over one’s mouth. The same organizations that split because they could not stomach unaccountable leadership now treat the mere suggestion of accountability as spiritual treason.

The first issue out of the gates is a whopper. It carries over from UCG pre-split into COGWA’s present-day operations.

COG Veritas reports this:

Doug Horchak and Dean A

Dean A was in the Dallas, Texas congregation and going through a divorce.   An already painful experience was magnified when he found something shocking….    Inappropriate emails going back and forth between his wife and his pastor, Doug Horchak.

The process to adjudicate these matters is to take these issues to the Regional Pastor. This was a man named Ken Giese out of Houston, Texas.

In a Heartbreaking email to Ken Giese that these authors have seen, Dean A laid out what he found between Horchak and his wife.  He clearly articulated he was ready to share the emails and documentation with Ken Giese.

He requested a meeting with Ken Giese.

The unspoken message in Dean’s emails was a deep sense of betrayal by his Pastor.

His last line in his email was: “And, Mr. Giese, I HAVE PROOF”.

Ken Gieses’ response: “Dean, I am praying for you.”

That was it.   No meeting.   No investigation.  Doug Horchak was not fired.   Doug’s inappropriate emails and evidence would not be reviewed.

Ken Giese buried it.

Dean A followed the ONLY process a member had.   Guess what happened to Dean A?

Dean A was disfellowshipped.

How many people go to COGWA and listen to Ken Giese’s sermons, as if he has credibility?    Ken Giese is dirty.    If you attend COGWA, will you look the other way or find a way to justify this scandal?

Why is Giese getting all the abuse! You assume he did nothing. He has a very tough reputation.

Why would Horchak write inapropriate emails to a married woman, when in a click of a button it could be shared?

Because Horchak is not exactly the brightest bulb in the chandelier. And, in the era when this situation happened, his buddies held all of the seats of power in UCG. I'm sure he knew they would squash anything that popped up. Longstanding WCG practice was to circle the wagons anytime something untoward was revealed. Deny, delay, disfellowship was and is the tried and true strategy.

Whoever published this piece clearly doesn’t know much. This is not a woman running this and is not a woman led movement at all lol

Just speculation here, as I haven’t seen the alleged messages, but sometimes a guy thinks more with his little head than his big head.

Wrong to say UCG was born of rebellion. Of all the major WCG offshoots, UCG is the one that makes the most sense within their worldview and religion. WCG abandoned Sabbath. That is the ultimate dealbreaker in Armstrongism short of abandoning Christ.

In any case, I look forward to seeing what comes out from this outfit.

Doug Horchak now is a top leader in COGWA, overseeing ministerial services overseas. And his wife goes with him on his world travels.

Random thoughts. Say you are a COG member, schooled in the methods of the subservience of women. This places you into the position of either living out a double standard (one behavioral pattern at church, another required for living and working in "the world") or being unable to deal with women in authority over you in the corporate structure if you happen to be a man, or perhaps refusing a promotion which would place you in a supervisory position over men if you happen to be a woman. (I honestly don't know, are married women allowed to work outside the home these days if they are ACOG members???)

I'm sometimes amazed (although I don't currently have it) that after all these decades of men wearing their hair longer without suddenly turning into sissies, ACOG members constantly complain any time a man with longer hair makes the news here on Banned. Many of us realized a long time ago that the statements on the topic in the New Testament reflected not some sort of eternal truth, but were simply indicative of the Roman militaristic culture which was the prevailing setting for the first century! I believe that much of what we read about women falls into the same category. It reflects an age of paternalism, an age when women were kept uneducated. Therefore, the women would be unprepared for leadership and would not only fail in most cases, but would most likely inadvertently sabotage the results of whatever projects in which they happen to be involved. The realities are totally different today, and if you want to succeed, you can't be bucking the system, or HR will have something to say about your career!

I would just love to see some guy somewhere in an ACOG try to lord it over his wife, totally forgetting the fact that his own sweet bride came from a military background, someone trained in hand to hand combat who would just righteously kick his ass! And somebody is sure to comment that I have it in for Sabbath Christians because of this attitude of mine, but, no, the Sabbath is totally beside the point in this case! What was the lady's name whose Armstrongite minister killed her? Amy Wine something, I'm thinking? Well, Amy, this one's for you!

Giese has always been a gaslighting tyrant.

Um, when I looked at the Facebook page it clearly says "her".

I suppose that if COGWA wanted to be good stewards of members tithes, they could give that job to a man with an unhappy marriage who would look forward to traveling alone.

Pretty much all these splinters have abondoned Armstrongism besides the sabbath keeping

Well, perhaps they’re doing that to stay anonymous. But I know the person and this isn’t a woman led movement.

You wanna know what the really sad part is? Beyond this specific post, most times, when an old school COG minister has ever been called out their mind has likely said to themselves, ”Who, me? No, let me explain…er, justify.”

I’ve interacted with several of the newer “fake” ministers in the various COG’s. Their hearts are light years ahead of the old WCG trained ministers. Very few of the old school ones have any type of genuine spiritual introspection regarding their personal ministry or leadership.

For those old COG ministers reading this and following this site…..yeah, you. Do better.

How truthful is this story? If it is, it is in line with what typically happens (in the church and in the world) when an "underling" speaks up about a truth which the "higher ups" would rather cover up. "Maal" is the Hebrew term for "coverup", which is translated as "transgression" or "trespass".

It's a shame how so many elders can turn on a dime against you when they feel their job security and reputation are at stake, while the pursuit of truth is relegated to the ash heap, as if Christ isn't watching.

No fear of God. They fear people more than God. They fear the loss of money, reputation, employment, etc. more than God. Not only do they not fear God, they don't respect the high standing of a lay member who has been personally called by God. Their usual justification and favourite doctrine is to say, "obey the government of God", even though that government teaches us pursue, truth, righteousness and fairness.

11:28 ??? How do you know these things???

11:36 and 6:33 Thank you for your comment and bringing the truth.

What is abondoned ? Sounds painful.

It is interesting to finally have some of the types of news which are typical of Armstrongism leaking from the COGaWA. Could this "Veritas" be their version of "Ambassador Reports"? Deja vu all over again! There be some dramas inside yo pajamas tonight!

When I friended the page, I received a recommendation for a “Jaclyn DeMoro.”

Anybody know who that might be, and if the apparent she has a connection to the page?

I would agree that of all the groups United makes the most sense for those who

1. Believe the old way
2. Want to keep a 7th day traditional sabbath

My sense is its far more Christ based than WCG ever was. If thats been the path while keeping the previous movement at heart than they deserve some praise.

I have no problem with a Christ based organization that chooses to maintain OT days for the days they choose

12:15, if you feel that UCG is the one that makes the most sense within their worldview and religion, then why did cogwa break away from UCG? Or why didn't cogwa's members just head to LCG?

Anonymous said...

12:00, UCG was the one that fled to safety in Christ and the law when both were under threat. They started out well but didn't progress because their sins kept coming back to haunt them. Christ gave them two 7-year periods to straighten up and restore righteousness and justice to the church but they failed. (They perverted justice in my case in 2001) So, as it was with Solomon, Christ decided to split up the kingdom for the sins of its leaders (who are always right in their own eyes). COGVeritas has verified many of their unrighteous deeds and coverups.

There are biblical precedents for this, brother. We don't run the show ourselves. Christ heads the church and does the gathering and dispersing. If our sins increase, He gives the green light to evil spirits (like ill-will, hate, jealousy, pride, self-exaltation, evil suspicions, slander, evil speaking, deceit, misunderstandings, ignorance, impatience, fear, neglect, etc.) to come into our midst.

Now you see why WCG had to be destroyed like the holy temple. Too many sins followed too many men into UCG and later into COGWA. New branches but with the same bad roots.

Why didn't COGWA head to UCG, you ask? Well, they came to UCG first and wanted no part of a leader who was disfellowshipped from WCG years before. And LCG had experienced its own split years before at which time Meredith's actions were under scrutiny. (always running to the money as they do today)

The reason the new chapters of Armstrongism (even the corrections) have failed is that without exception, the same old HWA managerial style was retained. These guys are so deeply programmed with that, that they should have been taken out of the equation, and replaced with empaths!
