Prominent Evangelist Creflo Dollar Admits Commanded Tithing Is Wrong

The prominent African-American Creflo Dollar has admitted his tithing requirements were wrong. Those tithes bought him jet planes, fancy homes, etc., with which he has been widely mocked.

Listening to him below he admits he woke up to the freedom of God's grace instead of being under the Mosaic covenants.

The concepts he brings across are the same revelation that the Worldwide Church of God came to understand about tithing. It is not commanded in the New Covenant under grace. People give because they understand they are blessed by God. Tithing was used as a tool of guilt and fear in the church.

Dollar says: Religion is sustained by two factors: fear and guilt.

Challenging popular Evangelical belief, controversial televangelist Creflo Dollar, one of America's most flamboyant proponents of the prosperity gospel, has renounced tithing and all his previous teachings on the subject as "not correct."

He also urged his followers to "throw away every book, every tape and every video I ever did on the subject of tithing" but says he will not apologize for his error.

In a Sunday sermon billed "The Great Misunderstanding," the founder and senior pastor of the nearly 30,000-member World Changers Church International headquartered in College Park, Georgia, said he is aware that his declaration will cause him to lose friends and invitations to speak at other churches.

However, he said he is convinced, after studying Romans 6:14, that tithing is an Old Testament concept that has been retired in the dispensation of grace in which Christians should now be living.
"I want to start off by saying that I'm still growing, and the teachings that I've shared in times past on the subject of tithing were not correct," Dollar began in his June 26 sermon.

"And today, I stand in humility to correct some things that I've taught for years and believed for years but could never understand it clearly because I had not yet been confronted with the Gospel of grace, which has made the difference."

"I won't apologize because if it wasn't for me going down that route, I wouldn't have ended up where I am now," he continued. "But I will say that I have no shame at all at saying to you, throw away every book, every tape and every video I ever did on the subject of tithing unless it lines up with this." Televangelist Creflo Dollar says teachings on tithing ‘not correct’ but won’t apologize to followers

It is interesting reading the comments tied in with the video above by people who want to continue to live under the bondage of tithing and the law. Just like many in Armstrongism, tithing is the one thing that the church has brainwashed members into believing they are commanded to do.  Tithing makes the COG merry-go-round function. Without this lie funding their so-called ministries would not be around today.

Some repentance. "Throw away all the lies you purchased from me... but don't ask for a refund. Buy my new materials instead!"

Yes, the term "tithe" is still used in churches that truly and fully believe in grace.
I've heard it often.
I believe in supporting what I am part of, donating to help.
But I cringe each time I hear the word "tithe" used.
Some people can't afford even 10% and are guilt-ridden if they give less, or nothing at all. In these trying times, my giving is under more scrutiny by ME.

‘Without this lie funding, their so called ministries would not be around today’.
Quite correct.
This is the only reason Armstrongism survives in its present shape to this hour.
Very different to what Jesus Christ commanded His disciples, when He sent them out to preach the gospel.
Those ‘men and women’ who preach the ‘prosperity gospel’ and tithing live a lifestyle well removed from their many followers.
Beautiful homes, multiple luxury cars, boats and jets are the ‘fruits’ of their ministries.
Glad this individual has made the comments he has publicly.

I recall one message Creflo Dollar gave in the mid-90s about this, when he was on Christian radio in Atlanta every morning.

He said after teaching tithing was Biblical, "I lost about half of my membership."

How many is he losing now?

When the apostate Joseph W. Tkach, Sr. threw tithing out of the WCG in 1995 along with everything else, the church quickly imploded and hundreds of “ministers” had to be terminated. Later, Joey, Jr. conveniently discovered that Abraham had tithed before the institution of the old covenant and began calling on every man, woman, and child to resume tithing immediately. But it was too late.

Even the ham-eating Sunday-keepers know very well that you do not mess with the tithing law, just with every other law.

Will Creflo Dollar now become Creflo Penny, or maybe even Creflo Penniless? Or will he humbly learn from someone like Dave Pack and do a “common” theft trick?

After checking Greek definitions on biblehub.com, a more accurate translation of Heb 7:12 is:
For when the priesthood is transferred, of necessity also there takes place a *removal of law – Heb 7:12. The law referenced is the tithing law.

*Same Greek word for "removing" (KJV) in Heb 12:27.

Creflo is following the Joe Tkach template.
When a church leader realizes that he is a failure, he turns on his sheep by teaching all manner of nonsense. Just like Dave Pack.

Next to British Israelism, tithing is the next biggest lie used to manipulate people in the church.

Reminds you when HWA was forced to correct the Divorce and Remarriage policy back in '73-'74 but never apologized to the people who were thrown under the bus because of that restrictive doctrine.

I thank heaven I found and read Kelly’s “Should the Church Teach Tithing?” about a decade ago now as it blew away all the false supports for tithing money. If I was following one man led group like so many HWA/COG cult leaders teach I would have to wait until that one man learnt the truth about this or any other subject and you may die having never learned the refreshing truth all because it suits these individuals and groups to keep their followers blind and in the dark to fund their greedy lifestyle!

Clearly tithing is biblical and should be upheld as an individual choice of worship, but not at the expense of the weightier matters of the law, like justice and mercy and faith. Matthew 23:23. And this is the problem with many churches.

MY COMMENT: Then why didn't the apostle Paul tell Christians, whether Jew or Gentile, to tithe to him or to other "ministers"? In that case, why didn't the twelve do the same thing?
