I am commissioned to BLOT OUT the spots and iron out the wrinkles in the church....

submitted by SHT

So lets get this straight.  Herbert saw it as his commision to BLOT out any COG member that did not follow HIS edicts, especially those not tithing 10%. That became a MAJOR SIN in Herb's eyes!

Considering tithing is NOT a New Covenant command, it is still amazing the COG had to determine it was a sin to not pay it.

Everything in the law-based church was a MAJOR sin.  Everything imaginable was used as a weapon to keep people living in fear of being turned away at the gates of Petra.

Fear is the greatest legacy of the Church of God. Not things like grace and mercy, but FEAR. Death ending fear that is meant to keep people in submission.  It is still the tool today of the merchants of the law in the church.

Damnation and death is the order of the day.

Herbert "Money Hungry" Armstrong was a piece of work, and not in a good way.

I've heard many times that the church did in fact check peoples tithing history.
My minister on occasion complained in sermons about members not tithing. How would he know unless records were checked?

The church absolutely did track members tithes and sent printouts to field churches concerning members not tithing or not giving 10%.

Well at least he was not "pussy-footing". He apparently had other "pussy" issues though!

Anon 12:40 PM, Rod Meredith did at least occasionally run a tithe-check on a field congregation before visiting, so he would know which members to favor and which to ignore.

And as I stated before, GTA, in a "must play" sermon, did bring up how he got a tithing report that somehow the computer "accidentally" printed...

The quote about Pharisees is one of the only NT scriptures that "supports" tithing -- but it refers to a very incidental matter (someone likened it to tithing on weeds) and of course it went to the Levites, not Jesus' ministry.

Yeah. That happens in mainstream churches, too. They watch who puts money or an envelope into the basket when they pass it down the rows. If you don't put anything in, you are not worth talking to. Churches are all about money.

Tithing wasn't an old testament commandment for everyone either. It was only for the land owners in Israel. Trying to say it was only old covenant is a half truth. The tithe to the levites was their inheritance because they didn't get land. So if lived in ancient Israel but had not land you didn't tithe.

then why did the Levites tithe? (remember the tithe of the tithe?...which was taken out of context by WCG)

The Levites didn't really tithe. They took 10% of the tithe that they received from the other tribes and gave it to the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron were Levites too. That's how God told the Levites to divvy up the tithe. The sons of Aaron got a larger portion.

If that's what makes you happy. Seeing that the sons of Aaron were also Levites I guess they tithed to themselves. 😵

Since Paul called the church a Royal Priesthood, I guess I need to write a check out to myself.😉
