My Post Pissed-off Bob Thiel
I was away from the computer yesterday and today, but it was brought to my attention that Bob Thiel posted a super-fast response to my post on First Century Christianity. I guess he didn’t like the real story about what happened in those early years of the Church! He wrote:
The anti-COG Banned by HWA website has the following post: First Century Christianity: Putting Together the Available Evidence.
He followed that statement with some excerpts from the article. Then, he went on to say:
Although the above author claims to have used scripture and historical sources like the so-called Ante-Nicene Fathers (those are writings from men prior to Emperor Constantine’s Council of Nicea in 325 A.D.), he has missed many things and came to a historically inaccurate conclusion. The idea that the Bible and early church history point to Sunday as being universally kept instead of the seventh-day Sabbath by the end of the first century A.D. is totally wrong and historically inaccurate. (cogwriter: The Sabbath in the First Centuries of the Christian Church)
Bob then proceeded to cite many of the passages which refer to Christ and his apostles keeping the Sabbath. My response: That’s great, Bob, and it doesn’t refute or contradict anything I wrote in my post. We would expect to find observant Jews keeping the Sabbath and observing the tenets of Torah, and we do! Next, he quoted extensively from the fourth chapter of the anonymous epistle to the Hebrews. And, as anyone with a background in Armstrongism would expect, he makes the claim that this passage also proves that Sabbath-observance continues to be a requirement from Christians. Bob, of course, completely ignores the context of the remarks and twists them to support his thesis.
The context of this passage, of course, is that the Israelites had failed to keep the commandments of Torah and had consequently failed to truly enter into God’s rest – the real one, the one that the Sabbath pointed to! We read there:
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. (Verses 8-10, ESV)
In the Gospel of Matthew, we read:
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
So, YES, a Sabbath rest remains for Christians – his name is Jesus of Nazareth!
As for the Ante-Nicene Fathers, Bob’s thesis does NOT hold water! The earliest Christian catechism (which was composed sometime in the First Century or very early in the Second), The Didache, has this to say about Christian worship:
Chapter 14. Christian Assembly on the Lord's Day. But every Lord's day gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one who is at odds with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned. For this is that which was spoken by the Lord: "In every place and time offer to me a pure sacrifice; for I am a great King, says the Lord, and my name is wonderful among the nations. (See Early Christian Writings: The Didache)
Notice this also from some of the epistles of Ignatius of Antioch (Late First, early Second Century): From his letter to the saints at Philadelphia:
But if any one preach the Jewish law unto you, listen not to him. For it is better to hearken to Christian doctrine from a man who has been circumcised, than to Judaism from one uncircumcised. But if either of such persons do not speak concerning Jesus Christ, they are in my judgment but as monuments and sepulchers of the dead, upon which are written only the names of men.
Likewise, in his epistle to the Magnesians, we read:
Be not deceived with strange doctrines, nor with old fables, which are unprofitable. For if we still live according to the Jewish law, we acknowledge that we have not received grace…If, therefore, those who were brought up in the ancient order of things have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in the observance of the Lord's Day, on which also our life has sprung up again by Him and by His death-whom some deny, by which mystery we have obtained faith, and therefore endure, that we may be found the disciples of Jesus Christ, our only Master-how shall we be able to live apart from Him, whose disciples the prophets themselves in the Spirit did wait for Him as their Teacher? And therefore He whom they rightly waited for, being come, raised them from the dead…Let us not, therefore, be insensible to His kindness. For were He to reward us according to our works, we should cease to be. Therefore, having become His disciples, let us learn to live according to the principles of Christianity. For whosoever is called by any other name besides this, is not of God. Lay aside, therefore, the evil, the old, the sour leaven, and be ye changed into the new leaven, which is Jesus Christ. Be ye salted in Him, lest any one among you should be corrupted, since by your savour ye shall be convicted. It is absurd to profess Christ Jesus, and to Judaize. For Christianity did not embrace Judaism, but Judaism Christianity, that so every tongue which believeth might be gathered together to God.
Finally, Justin Martyr (Second Century) wrote this about the manner of Christian worship common at that time:
“And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits; then, when the reader has ceased, the president verbally instructs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things. Then we all rise together and pray, and, as we before said, when our prayer is ended, bread and wine and water are brought, and the president in like manner offers prayers and thanksgivings, according to his ability, and the people assent, saying Amen; and there is a distribution to each, and a participation of that over which thanks have been given, and to those who are absent a portion is sent by the deacons. And they who are well to do, and willing, give what each thinks fit; and what is collected is deposited with the president, who succors the orphans and widows and those who, through sickness or any other cause, are in want, and those who are in bonds and the strangers sojourning among us, and in a word takes care of all who are in need. But Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Savior on the same day rose from the dead. For He was crucified on the day before that of Saturn (Saturday); and on the day after that of Saturn, which is the day of the Sun, having appeared to His apostles and disciples, He taught them these things, which we have submitted to you also for your consideration.
So, sorry Bob – your narrative about what happened in the First Century just does NOT hold up to scrutiny! Herbert Armstrong was no historian. In fact, he wasn’t much of a theologian either. Rather than trying to read your teaching about the Sabbath into history, you may want to re-examine the actual documents and histories related to that era!

Some people are obsessed with Bob Thiel. It must be a case of envy.
I don't think anyone here is obsessed with the spiritual fraud. What we do want to do, just like the Living Church of God does, is to continue to expose him as the fraudulent liar and false teacher he is so that more people's spiritual lives are not damaged. Bob is his own worst enemy. He has never learned when to keep his mouth shut. Meredith kicked him out of the LCG for that, in a very public manner. LCG members endlessly made fun of his crazy self-righteous attitude, and still do to this day.
Indeed, also pride and arrogance stops us from learning, eyes that don't see and ears that don't hear.
"For verily I say unto you,
Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." - Jesus
I was reading Ezekiel today, spiritual Israel is just as hard hearted.
The potential damage he could inflict has been held to a minimum, by his own credibility and personality. The Africans are arguably doing greater damage to Bob than he is to them. If you suddenly need a dose of bias confirmation, Bob's your man! Look up bias confirmation in your Funk & Wagnalls, and you'll see a picture of Bob.
He'd rather believe his African WitchDoctors ( oh sorry Ministry, then believe in your face evidence 👺👹🤬🤪
Yes, Jesus did say that, and then he proceeded to fulfill it ALL!
Bob cites examples of Jesus and the disciples keeping the sabbath. First, the only specific mention of anyone actually keeping the sabbath in the entire New Testament is the Galilean women who showed up at Jesus' tomb. Peter at this same time said "I go fishing!" They did not "get it" until Jesus appeared to them and explained to them that this was not the end, it was actually the beginning.
Secondly, even though the words did not specifically indicate it, of course Jesus and the disciples would be keeping the sabbath. They were still living under the Old Covenant. The New was not yet sealed by Jesus' death and resurrection. Bob seems incapable of understanding or making that distinction.
'I was away from my computer yesterday.'
At Church Sabbath services.
The New was not yet sealed by Jesus' death and resurrection. Bob seems incapable of understanding or making that distinction.>>>>>
They don't want to understand it because ''keeping'' sabbath becomes a badge of honour that meets the law and separates them out as righteous ones while others don't make the grade.
Yet, having regard to Jesus's magnification / elevation of the law as discussed 5 - where He elevates the law to the utmost ethical standard - only the foolish and self-righteous would claim to be able to obey
- it becomes apparent no one can possibly reasonably comply with such. Jesus chose not to reference sabbath in this most important discourse in Matthew chapter 5 concerning the law of Moses and His elevation of it, but we are instructed of His purpose. He leaves all convicted of sin.
Thus, we have the situation where a believer says they do indeed keep sabbath, but we know in respect of other commandments they cannot possibly be compliant - a paradox never resolved by ''keepers''
HWA claimed the Sabbath was the "test commandment", but my observations of many Christians in lifw suggest that "thou shalt not bear false witness" is probably a better test. :)
Nobody would have ever heard of Bob if not for the people who are obsessed with him.
indeed that is the better test. Or honor parents but how does one ensure that your honoring enough/adequately/ to claim to ''keep''
Personally I’m appreciating Bob’s research more of late as I’ve been investigating the topic of the early history of Christianity and the Quartodeciman controversy for some time now and his research and conclusions have complimented my own.
Also, I don’t believe Peter ever was in Rome or the first Pope of Rome or died or buried in Rome. It is my view that the RCC is an apostate church, which apostatized from God’s truth early on in the first to second centuries AD.
8:12 said, "Nobody would have ever heard of Bob if not for the people who are obsessed with him."
Then why do you keep talking about him all the time? Little Bob needs to pull on his big boy panties and act like a man, for once.
which apostatized from God’s truth early on in the first to second century>>> 'A true history of the true church'?
Rcc seems to have more biblical truth than was realized as compared to all that went with the fake apostle and his offshoots
Not 7:08 glad you've admitted it. But rewriting scripture incorrectly is a new low.
Low low. Embarrassingly low.
@ 8:20 ~ Been there, done that. Good luck with it.
Bob has already posted a response to my response to him in which he denies that my post got under his skin! For those who are interested, you can view the full post here: https://www.cogwriter.com/news/church-history/banned-from-the-truth-about-church-history/
Bob wrote:
"The anti-Church of God Banned by HWA website continues to not understand or teach the truth about a lot things, including about the Sabbath, church history, and me.
The Bible teaches:
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest you also be like him.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest he be wise in his own eyes. (Proverbs 26:4-5)
Thus, sometimes I will respond to Banned posts, though most of the time I do not.
Anyway, on Friday, there was a post at the Banned site that was wrong about church history and the Sabbath, so I decided to cite scriptures and historical documents to show that the position taken was wrong (see The Sabbath in the first centuries of the Christian Church).
Yesterday, instead of admitting the truth, the following post was made there:
Bob Thiel’s Complete Meltdown Over 1st Century Christianity…"
To summarize, Bob didn't like the historical sources I quoted in my post. He said that I quoted 3 sources. I actually quoted five: Scripture, The Didache, Ignatius' epistle to the Philadelphians, his epistle to the Magnesians, and a passage from Justin Martyr's apology. His chief defense: Most of the relevant translators didn't properly translate the original Greek. I trust my readers to judge for themselves the context of the remarks by Ignatius.

Here's another historical source for Bob, a later source than the ones provided by me (and one he cited in another context):
Eusebius wrote:
1. The evil demon, however, being unable to tear certain others from their allegiance to the Christ of God, yet found them susceptible in a different direction, and so brought them over to his own purposes. The ancients quite properly called these men Ebionites, because they held poor and mean opinions concerning Christ.
2. For they considered him a plain and common man, who was justified only because of his superior virtue, and who was the fruit of the intercourse of a man with Mary. In their opinion the observance of the ceremonial law was altogether necessary, on the ground that they could not be saved by faith in Christ alone and by a corresponding life.
3. There were others, however, besides them, that were of the same name, but avoided the strange and absurd beliefs of the former, and did not deny that the Lord was born of a virgin and of the Holy Spirit. But nevertheless, inasmuch as they also refused to acknowledge that he pre-existed, being God, Word, and Wisdom, they turned aside into the impiety of the former, especially when they, like them, endeavored to observe strictly the bodily worship of the law.
4. These men, moreover, thought that it was necessary to reject all the epistles of the apostle, whom they called an apostate from the law; and they used only the so-called Gospel according to the Hebrews and made small account of the rest.
5. The Sabbath and the rest of the discipline of the Jews they observed just like them, but at the same time, like us, they celebrated the Lord's days as a memorial of the resurrection of the Saviour.
6. Wherefore, in consequence of such a course they received the name of Ebionites, which signified the poverty of their understanding. For this is the name by which a poor man is called among the Hebrews.

The epistle of Barnabas (First/Second Century):
Further, also, it is written concerning the Sabbath in the Decalogue which [the Lord] spoke, face to face, to Moses on Mount Sinai, And sanctify the Sabbath of the Lord with clean hands and a pure heart. Exodus 20:8; Deuteronomy 5:12 And He says in another place, If my sons keep the Sabbath, then will I cause my mercy to rest upon them. Jeremiah 17:24-25 The Sabbath is mentioned at the beginning of the creation [thus]: And God made in six days the works of His hands, and made an end on the seventh day, and rested on it, and sanctified it. Attend, my children, to the meaning of this expression, He finished in six days. This implies that the Lord will finish all things in six thousand years, for a day is with Him a thousand years. And He Himself testifies, saying, Behold, today will be as a thousand years. Therefore, my children, in six days, that is, in six thousand years, all things will be finished. And He rested on the seventh day. This means: when His Son, coming [again], shall destroy the time of the wicked man, and judge the ungodly, and change the-sun, and the moon, and the stars, then shall He truly rest on the seventh day. Moreover, He says, You shall sanctify it with pure hands and a pure heart. If, therefore, any one can now sanctify the day which God has sanctified, except he is pure in heart in all things, we are deceived. Behold, therefore: certainly then one properly resting sanctifies it, when we ourselves, having received the promise, wickedness no longer existing, and all things having been made new by the Lord, shall be able to work righteousness. Then we shall be able to sanctify it, having been first sanctified ourselves. Further, He says to them, Your new moons and your Sabbath I cannot endure. Isaiah 1:13 You perceive how He speaks: Your present Sabbaths are not acceptable to Me, but that is which I have made, [namely this,] when, giving rest to all things, I shall make a beginning of the eighth day, that is, a beginning of another world. Wherefore, also, we keep the eighth day with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead. And when He had manifested Himself, He ascended into the heavens.
How deceived you people are!
Ignatius was being taken to the lions. The law-haters doctored his letters.
It's not good to Judaize on Sabbath but it's OK to traditionalize (and reinvent) with Sunday worship? Replace one commandment that's hated with another that's invented by men and everything is good?
Not happening.
As explained to you at least twice before, 7:08, no, its quite literally a mix of laughter and pity.
11:49, I've often said that amongst secular people, there are any number of cultures, myriad holidays, and the vast majority of the folks involved look forward to those days! They love them! So people can be happy in nearly any type of holiday or holyday situation. Observant Jews love Shabbos!
I personally do not hate the sabbath. But let's face it, HWA and his organization used it to beat the crap out of us mentally and psychologically. He also used it to put down all competitive religious systems, and to foster elitism amongst church members. These are anti-Christian attitudes!
People who have left Armstrongism can't unknow how HWA had used it as a whip on them. If you present ice cream to a child in a certain way, you can make them hate it. The sabbath should have been like ice cream, and because of the way HWA bullied us with it, and exploited it to his own advantage, he completely ruined it for us. Stuff like that sticks with you forever!
Don't blame the victim, blame the spiritual rapist!
Bob has a real problem with people not submitting to him. It's an obvious pattern that repeats over and over again with him. He just can't reconcile his own ego with people continuing to disagree with him.
Earlier this year, xHWA posted an excellent treatise on the Quartodeciman Controversy: https://asbereansdid.blogspot.com/2024/02/primer-to-quartodeciman-controversy.html

So far as I know early Christian’s had a custom to meet Sunday. There was no command to do so.
Neither is there a command to meet sabbath as that related to Israel. If one chooses to pay regard to sabbath that too is their freedom.
Things don’t revolve all the time around demands and commands.
I hope you're speaking ironically, because no one here envies Boob Thiel.
Oh, that blog's back in action? Good, we have somewhere to send the doctrinal nerds that pop up from time to time.
1023, good response to 1149's question:
"It's not good to Judaize on Sabbath but it's OK to traditionalize (and reinvent) with Sunday worship? Replace one commandment that's hated with another that's invented by men and everything is good?"
Focusing on demands and commands makes it hard to understand what Christ's sacrifice and the giving of the Holy Spirit is all about.
Early Christians had daily worship.
Right, 10:23, the early Christians did meet on Sunday during those early days (early 100's AD, maybe even 1st century) because the push after the fall of the temple was to get rid of anything "Jewish", hence the use of the term "judaizing".
The other reason is the claim that the Lord was raised on Sunday, which is false. No proof that He was raised on a Sunday but there is proof (scriptural and secular) that He was raised on Sabbath.
Another reason is the affiliation with sun worship on Sunday.
As for whether there was a command to meet, sheep don't meet together on their own without a shepherd. The church of God doesn't operate like that. It's not a social group led by a charismatic who lacks authority. Everyone operates by some authority. The true church had the commands from Christ about the Sabbath and Passover. The false church went away from that during that time and invented it's own commands (Sunday worship, Easter, etc.), contrary to Christ's command in Mk 7:9. Those early sheep were being led away by the church leaders who apostasized, as per Acts 20:29. They had authority and issued commands no doubt, just like JWT jr when he took over WCG. Look at what happened over time. People and kings and governments killed over these issues. And Easter is a massive worldwide celebration and has been statutized in law by nonbelievers. Even Putin ordered his troops to stop fighting on Easter.
