ExUCG Member Debunks British Israelism

Ken Young, an exUCG member has written a book debunking the British Israelism myth that currently occupies the minds of many Church of God leaders and ministers.

I'm an unofficial bootee from the United Church of God, mainly because of a documentary I made about HWA in 2017. Though I had reservations about COG doctrines before this, the manner in which I was disfellowshipped resolved the matter for me. Since Christ's disciples may recognize each other by their love one for another, my eviction proved to me, once and for all, that I had NOT been attending "God's church". This convinced me I needed to go back and "prove all things".

After several years of intense study, I have gathered enough scriptural evidence to completely debunk British-Israelism, mandatory tithing, and many of the COG's other carnal-minded doctrines. I have put all this evidence in a handful of ebooks which I would like to make freely available to everyone.

Because of the times we live in, and the COG messages I have heard, I believe there is more danger of the churches of God using fearmongering to extort money from sincere but naive Christians now than perhaps ever before.

Are the United States and Britain Israel?

A refutation of major arguments which support "Anglo-Israelism", the "identity" movement, racism, and other carnal-mindedness.

This book is written for all those who, like me, were once associated with the Worldwide Church of God, or any of its “splinter groups” (or COG's) who adhere to Herbert W. Armstrong's teachings. For decades, he taught that the US and much of Europe were collectively the lost tribes of Israel. In his book The United States and Britain in Prophecy he called this idea the “master key” to unlock all bible prophecy. And he claimed God revealed this information to him personally, as one of a select number of “restored truths”:

“Another thing restored to us is our own roots, our identity, who we are. We [within the USA] are the tribe of Manasseh of the lost ten tribes of Israel, and no other Church on earth knows it. That knowledge has been restored into this Church, and God restored that to me 53 years ago.” (Armstrong, MOTPCE)

However, “Anglo-Israelism”—or “British-Isralism”—did not originate with Armstrong. His work is clearly influenced by Judah's Scepter and Joseph's Birthright, written in 1902 by J. H. Allen, a preacher in the Church of God (Holiness). In 1874, Edward Hines first published Forty-Seven Identifications of the British Nation With the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel; and still earlier, in 1840, John Wilson published Lectures on our Israelitish Origin.

Though the COG’s seldom admit it, this idea has been floating around protestant circles for centuries. The theory first came into public perception in nineteenth-century England, at a time when the church of England (or Anglican church) was the only game in town. Today, we are accustomed to religious freedom, but back then such freedoms simply did not exist. That was one big reason the pilgrims left England to colonize the Americas.

We may remember King Henry VIII created the church of England because the Pope wouldn't permit him to divorce his wife and marry Ann Bolyn. Since then, every British monarch has held the title 'Supreme Head of the Church of England'. Back then, these monarchs controlled every facet of religion in England. This is why the puritans colonized America, and why Tyndale went to Germany to publish the first mass-produced English-language Bible, as we will see later in this series.

Back then, it would have been very difficult, if not impossible, to publish a book whose doctrines the church of England did not already agree with. In simple terms, they must had the crown’s permission to teach this doctrine. Indeed, some of the first published authors espousing this certainly claimed to be clergymen of the church of England. Thus, by definition, British-Israelism served as royalist propaganda.

Most sources trace British-Israelism back to Richard Brothers, who in 1794 published A Revealed Knowledge of the Prophecies and Times. Brothers believed this knowledge made him God’s apostle of a new religion, calling himself “Prince of the Hebrews” and claiming to be a literal descendant of David. Since he believed Israel to be great Britain—and therefore his subjects—this claim led to his arrest for treason; but instead of serving a prison sentence he was ultimately institutionalized (Wikipedia, “Richard Brothers”). Have we heard any other people claiming to be God’s apostle, and the direct descendant of king David? If so, Brothers did it first.

From this point onward, because of my desire for brevity and penchant for alliteration, I will refer to Anglo-Israelism proponents as either “AI-Advocates” because they support AI, or “BI-Bigots” because they are uniquely close-minded and intolerant of every other opinion on the subject. But honest AI-advocates must admit the scriptures don't support AI. There are no scriptures which explicitly state Israel migrated to Europe—so they SPECULATE and reinforce it by cherry-picking from historical accounts.

Then they make it their official doctrine! I hope we see why this is a bad idea. COG booklets on this subject focus upon the promises to Abraham, Isaac's blessing, and Israel's dispersion; but they almost never delve into the new testament. God explains many deep truths through Paul, which such booklets ignore. Instead, they give us lots of history and speculation. Generally speaking, we cannot learn much of God's word without putting many scriptures together —including those of the new testament.

For those interested, Ken has a website up with other topics that will be relatable to Church of God members. CrossedWord.net

The disUnited Church of Godlessness has always been full of all sorts of unrepentant, unconverted unbelievers “debunking” everything that HWA had taught and spouting off their own pet theories.

You are too funny Anon 11:30.

Those that left the UCG are not godless and probably have a better relationship with God now than they ever did before. Once you leave Armstrongism life is free and amazing. Try it, you might like it.

Hey, the book's free, so give us a point-by-point critique.

See (COGs) Armstrongism designate Genesis 12:3 “all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” to America and Britain receiving the birthright blessings. When Paul references this scripture towards the gospel in Galatians 3:8-9, he’s using it in a spiritual sense through faith and not the way they have done. The scripture has already been spiritually fulfilled when the Gentiles started receiving the gospel. They have and continue to misapply scripture to fit their narrative. It’s sad, and I really feel sorry for them because Armstrongism doesn’t allow one to change and admit where one is wrong.

Anon at 11:30 is NOT saying that these bad characters left the UCG.

I welcome this book. BI was entirely believable in its day. But we did not have access to the resources that are so readily available today, that show us most convincingly that this doctrine is shallow, superficial and not the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.
I was a believer in this highly flawed and erroneous doctrine for decades but I always realised that our faith in Christ was not dependent on BI or many of the other doctrines that underpinned Armstrongism. I welcomed the move away from BI and was hoping that Armstrongism would move closer to the One they said they represented. So it was easy for me to cast away what as Paul said was lost that I may gain Christ. This highly misleading and mistaken doctrine needs to be confronted wherever it’s rears it’s ugly head.

IF/WHEN the USA gets punished for its sins, maybe people will stop saying that the US&BIP is not important.

(Two chapters in) Ken should have gotten someone versed in English to proofread this. Lots of typos and grammar errors. And stifle the Armstrongist need to put every third word in all caps!

"The great blessings are being taken away from the American people"??????

See this is what I'm talking about. You're not talking about the spiritual blessings though. You don't get it. See the Waldensians, Cathars, Albigensian Paulicans Bogomils weren't concerned about "physical birthright blessings" as they were being persecuted by the Roman system. Armstrongism was never persecuted by the Roman System or at least Worldwide wasn't.

See Paul was strengthened by God through his physical weaknesses (being humble).
Gen. 12:3 in the New Testament Era has little to do with the physical birthright blessings. This verse is full-filled through faith Gal 3:8, which Paul explained to the Gentiles. The blessings under the New Covenant not Old.

America can't repent of something it never started to do in the first place. It's always kept Sunday, observed Pork Eating, observed Easter and all the other stuff. America never observed the Hebrew Calendar.

Wrong again, folks. The closer we get to the end, the more you are deceived.

Acts 29, the "lost chapter of Acts", shows that Paul made a trip to Britain because of a lead from the local Phoenicians that some Israelites had fled there long ago. You might not call this Scripture but you can call this evidence unless you want to be biased.

There is plenty of evidence out there from Davidy, Collins and others but it is exhausting to study. For one thing, Christ sent the apostles, Peter, Andrew, etc., to the lost tribes (Mt 10:6), who found them and established churches there. Where do we find a lot of churches today?

Stop letting the devil snatch these things out of your heart (Luke 8:12). If God intends to save all of Israel (Rom 11:26) it goes without saying that He must know where they are, because like associates with like predominantly. "I will wander (nuwa) the house of Israel among all nations" and not one of them will be lost (Amos 9:9).

What I find amazing Anonymous 3:05,

Is that after Christ died and resurrected, the glorified Christ began to work with Paul and John and Peter. At the very end he wrote letters to the Churches in Revelation 2-3. He (Christ) didn’t write letters to the nations or the Israelite nations, HE WROTE LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES. Because that is who He is concerned with right now. The first fruits of salvation who come from everywhere Rev. 5:8-10.

Your focus is out of sequence, it’s sad. The first resurrection is the better resurrection.

I finished the 261 page book. Some good points made, some threadier stuff, maybe an opportunity or two missed. Things I could point out but I'll hold off, as I'm sure a good portion of responders won't read it and I want to give them ample opportunity to demonstrate that. :)

Okay Anyon 3:05 So lets go with that, Rom 11:26 God intends all of Israel to be saved.

YES, But when will this take place?

It's in your doctrine GWTJ (Great White Throne Judgement) Valley of Dry Bones (Ezekiel 37)

Ezekiel 37:11 Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel.

THIS IS AFTER CHRIST RETURNS & FIRST RESURRECTION, AFTER THE MILLENNIUM, then Israel will be saved. (but they are resurrected back to PHYSICAL LIFE and then given God's spirit to obey him v12-14).

MEANWHILE the first resurrection is reserved for those who believe in Christ own words about keeping the commandments (if you would enter into life), statutes and judgements. The first resurrection is the better resurrection.

See the British Israel doctrine isn't a part of the commandment keeping, statutes or things that qualify for salvation. That's where you are deceived, is that you think it is required for salvation.

Continue in your folly. Again Christ wrote to the Churches who were being called and chosen for salvation, He didn't write the nations. You guys are acting like it's Ninevah and they need to repent as a nation. It's a different chosen system right now.

Anon 3:05:00 PM PDT

The first appearance of this 'work' was in 1871 and was translated from the Greek by Sonnini Manoncourt, and is considered a fraud.
Its purpose was to add support to BI, of which there is very little, to say the least. It is rarely sited by BI movements who acknowledge its dubious orgins.
Wheres the orginal manuscript?
Where is the external references to a 'lost chapter of Acts'?
A big problem with Manoncourts 'discovery' is no mention in his 2 volume piece on his travels in Asia minor of a 'remarkable discovery'. This is an astonishing omission.
Comments on the Druids as descended from the Jews by their adherence to rituals and ceremonies of Jewish origin, stand in direct contrast to Judaism, which Paul would have recognised as incorrect and blasphemy.
The Sonnini Manuscript is but a 19th century forgery and acknowledged so by scholars.

4:13, only a remnant of Israel will be delivered in the last days soon before and after the Lord's return, not just after the millenium. Rev 7:4-8 is the proof. The old template under Solomon is going to be restored, with the temple in the middle surrounded by Judah and Israel in their former lands.

The Lord has made the new covenant with His church but He also intends to make it with collective Israel and Judah at his second coming. (Jer 31:31)

If He is going to do that He has to know where they are now, which is the matter in question.

..the matter in question

The matter in question is that you desire being an American/British Israelite human being in the millennium?? Deep down you don’t want to be in the family of God (Spirit Being). You’re too busy trying to justify who are the physical Israelites. When John the Baptist and Christ warned against this (Matthew 3:9, John 8:37-38)

You sight Rev 7:4-8 as proof,

LET”S GO WITH THAT
well continue to read the next verse v. 9 the great multitude come from all nations, tribes, peoples and TONGUES coming from the tribulation and make it into the kingdom. And notice verse 7, mentioning that 12,000 Levites are sealed. (THAT”S THE ONE I WILL USE)

So again, what nation did the Levites from? The Levites did the priestly duties in each tribe. Where did they go? THEY DIDN”T MAKE UP A NATION. So in Malachi 3:3, it says He will purify the sons of Levi, (and this is just before Christ 2nd coming). This has to refer to God’s Church at the end time just before his second coming. As the NT church members are able to have access to God as the priest did in the OT. That’s why we must have priestly garments that are made white. See many prophets didn’t use the Greek language for Church, so they chose a tribe or like Daniel, they chose an overcoming characteristic, like “those that understand” the “holy ones.” Levites are mentioned also in a prophecy in Isaiah.

You are right about a remnant being left before, and during the millennium as the prophets mentioned. But the remnant is there only because He promised Abraham that ya’ll wouldn’t be consumed. There has to be an covenant agreement. Only God’s Church has made the covenant agreement in the NT age. That’s why Paul said in Galatians that the church was the Israel of God (Gal 6:16).

So many booklets on a physical doctrine that doesn’t seek the Kingdom and His righteousness. It seeks it’s own, it’s not love. It talks about physical blessings and ignores slavery and colonialism.

I’ve commented 5 times on this post, and I’m done. "he has to know where they are at" OF COURSE HE KNOWS WHERE THEY ARE AT, but more importantly He knows who are His called out ones, who are getting primed to be in HIS family. THAT should be the focus, but Armstrongism won't allow you to do that.

"He has to know where they are at"

Well, as a friend of mine, being much more skilled at grammar than I, used to quip, "Between the a and the t!" Where they are at is very bad grammar! Bad dog!!!

As far as white garments go, I used to enjoy wearing white Levis. Now they are identified with the gay community.

Let’s see. Mainstream Christianity believes in Rabbits that lay eggs. White bearded man who rides a sleigh and delivers toys all over the world with reindeer that fly. And they teach this to their kids and then people wonder why Christian’s are so wacky

Anonymous said...

Well, 7:11, I wish my parents had lied to me about Santa Claus and the Easter bunny than the Germans and 1975! It would have been much less damaging!

What is an 'unofficial bootee' from UCG exactly ?
Is UCG not following their own rules on disfellowshipment?

Anonymous said...

Only in UCG has anxious B.I. ones for years against BI. It is a problem from within the ranks of UCG ministry. It is not a problem in other COG groups.

jim said...

7:11,
I suppose you really do not believe non-cog Christians believe rabbits lay eggs or that santa claus, but I can’t be sure as most cog members have little idea what most non-cog Christians believe. Cog members grew up on a weekly diet of false explanations and strawmen of what non-cog Christians believe. Ive seen few that are motivated to correct that indoctrination.

Anonymous said...

Relax! This whole post has only been an unofficial bootee call!

Anonymous said...

Where is the proof that the English and American people are descended from ancient Isreal? Genetics and archeology tends to indicate that British Isrealizm is a false theory.

RSK said...

I have never met a Christian who actually believes some magic rabbit lays eggs like a bird, or that Santa Claus actually exists and gets around with flying reindeer. I watched Looney Tunes as a kid, doesnt mean I believe in a talking, smirking Bugs Bunny or a roadrunner that goes beepbeep.

Anonymous said...

That is another way in which Armstrongism is time and date-stamped, RSK. Back in the 1950s, talking heads and influencers got away with creating strawman arguments as they attempted to make their points. Armstrongites continue to spout them to us even today, believing that they can win arguments using them.

PROOFS and POOFS

You might think that you have proven something or disproven something.

A common trick these days is to claim that something has been “proven.”

Another common trick these days is to claim that something has been “debunked.”

The so-called COGs are the organizations that can “absolutely, conclusively, scientifically prove something beyond the shred of a reasonable doubt” and yet somehow still leave many doubts.

Remember how guys like Dave Pack have come up with so many hundreds of proofs of things that still are not really proven, or that actually got proven wrong. In fact, sometimes he devoted dozens of proofs to one opinion, but then switched and came up with dozens of proofs of the opposite. Dave really gave “proofs” a very bad name to the point that some people might never trust so-called “proofs” ever again.

Out in the world it has been said that for whatever you want to believe you can always find someone with a PhD to prove it for you.

Scholars all around the world have always come to the conclusions that they are required to come to in order to collect a paycheck and not get into trouble.

Anonymous said...

By literally hundreds of very bad examples, Dave Pack has inadvertently proven that proofs never really prove anything.
