Herbert Armstrong's Tangled Web of Corrupt Leaders
I grew up in Worldwide and really never knew how lousy our hymns and music was til i heard some old Southern hymns and old black spirituals. It was pretty sorry
I groan when I hear former HWA members proclaim that they have become atheists. It's the proverbial throwing out the baby with the bath water. People can leave an abusive corporate organisation and still be conscientious Christians.
The hymns that are most similar are "Oh God, We Have Heard" and "Awake, O Eternal!". They are in the same key, have the same time signature, the same tempo, and have the same phrasings. I have actually performed special music in a group where both melodies are done at the same time. The women would sing verse 1 of one of the hymns while the men would "harmonize" by singing "ahh" to the melody of the other hymn at the same time. For verse 2, the men sing and the women "ahh". It works very well, and is much better than either of the hymns individually.
I remember back in the early '70s, joking about looking forward to when Mark Armstrong got the conch, so we could have good hymns that sounded like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, or Humble Pie. Silly me! The whole danged thing fell apart, all the splinters still use the same wretched hymns from the dreaded Purple Hymnal, (as if they're some kind of oracle), and just look at what the hell happened to Mark!
Ah well! My bad! Guess that's why I didn't grow up to be a prophet!
Two similar hymns that could be played simultaneously together… “To thee I lift my soul,” and “mine eyes upon the lord, continually are set.” They are right next to each other side by side in the old purple hymnal. It’s basically the same song.
Some of the old WCG hymns were reasonable, but most need updating, rewriting, or just replaced with some better ones. I am disappointed every time I listen to a service, such as that of CGA, and they still use those boring old Dwight Armstrong hymns. They do not even use the non-DA hymns from the old WCG hymnal, even though they are using that actual hymnal. At least in UCG and COGWA they created some new hymns that were much better than the old ones, or used good hymns from other churches.

If you really want to laugh, you should listen to LCG's "choir" recording of the hymns!!!!!
More recent hymnals, such as United's, note some of the Dwight Armstrong lyrics actually came from Psalters of the 17th century.
At least Marvin Gaye's family is unlikely to sue COG's over copycat chords. :-)
P.S. It would be interesting next to compare Fanny Crosby's classic hymns. She wrote THOUSANDS of them.

The Purple Hymnal needs a big update. Perhaps adding in a little bit from the rock group DEEP PURPLE might help! :-)
