Church of God, The Eternal's Jon Brisby Sinks To A New Vile Low



One of the vilest teachings of the church that was brutally enforced over the decades was the "divorce and remarriage" doctrine/teaching.  Countless stories have been told over the decades of loving couples and families ripped to pieces by the Church of God's vile stance.  Most had probably thought those days were long gone, but it is not.

This letter was posted on Exit and Support and describes the vile and unChristian teachings of Jon Brisby:

I wanted to write and thank you for helping people who have left or will leave the "Armstrong cult groups." I was born into the WWCG. It helped to destroy my whole family--my parents, my siblings, and up until this year, even me. We all made some mistakes and bad choices on our own but Herbert Armstrong and his ministers, splinters, and even some members, helped destroy my family emotionally, just with the judgmental attitudes, being made to feel we were in "hot water" with God, telling us that outsiders were of the world, etc. My most recent minister Jon W. Brisby (Church of God, the Eternal) has even told me that my lack of financial comfort is the result of my "not living in a pleasing enough way for God." I was also told that my family is the "church" now and no longer my kids, since they are not members. Luckily, my kids grew up against the Armstrong teachings and have their own beliefs. As for me, I am finally what I consider to be "out of the dark" of these Armstrong worshippers. I emailed my minister two weeks ago and explained my decision to leave. He has yet to respond. 
Church of God, The Eternal (COGE) is a small group. The lead minister is Jon W. Brisby (age 55). He has some wild ideas. A married couple came to the group from LCG a few years ago. They had been married for about 18 years. Brisby soon found out that the man had been married briefly to someone else when he was a really young man. They divorced and his ex married someone else. Anyway, this married couple of 18 plus years were instructed to split up and live separately but not get divorced. Jon Brisby told him that if his ex wife happens to die then and only then can he and his current wife live as a couple again. The couple have remodeled their home and made it into a duplex. They each live in one of the side by side units. They are allowed to go back and forth to each other's apartment for meal times but not allowed to sleep, shower or linger at each other's place. At the Feast of Tabernacles and Pentecost they were not permitted to sit together for services. This couple is in their 50's also.
There is another man, a single man around age 60. This man was also married but years ago his wife left him and married a Seventh Day Adventist. Brisby told him he must never remarry. This man said God would not allow him to marry unless his ex died. Brisby stays in total control of the dating and marriage relationships in the group. He comes off as very intensely and genuinely kind, but if he feels you cross him, then he gets an attitude and can be very arrogant.

Church of God, the Eternal has on its page the following which is used as a weapon to stop members from writing such things as was done above.  They seek to create the myth that all of the things they teach are directly from Christ, passed down through the apostles to Bisby and others today.  To deny what they teach is blasphemy and denial of the truth which separates the "rebellious" from God.

What God gave to Moses, He gave to Christ. What Christ taught to the apostles, He commissioned them to proclaim in their designated areas. What Christ and the apostles taught was the same as was revealed to Paul. And what all those servants taught is exactly what was given to an end-time servant (Matthew 28:19–20). For those who will hear, our purpose is to honor and proclaim that same way of life—the faith once delivered. In that way is found no part of the way given to Gentiles—people of the world (Deuteronomy 12:1–3; 4:1–40, Acts 14:16). We want the ways of God. We are not interested in any of the traditions or customs of this world. God’s servant of these last days at no time made the pagan customs of this world a part of the doctrine. The spirit which introduces change, and/or a relaxation of the doctrine is as much at work today as it was in the past. The called of God must be on guard incessantly. That spirit is a deceiver. He will do anything to destroy.
One concluding observation seems to be necessary. Those who believed and loved the Truth of God have remained strong, loyal, and faithful. On the other hand, it seems that everyone who was “argued” into acceptance of the “faith once delivered” has failed ultimately. It, indeed, seems like God is separating those who believe and love the Truth from those who must surely have accepted only on the basis of their own personal intellectual prowess.
Satan and his demons hate the ways of God. They will do anything to disrupt, challenge, and destroy. Such behavior is a manifestation of who and what the true people of God are all about. They persecuted Christ. In like manner they will do the same thing to those in whom Christ lives. The faithful of God will count it a privilege to suffer for the cause of righteousness. They will be persecuted and lied about with abandon, but these chosen children of God will know who they are. They love the Truth and will for no cause allow themselves to turn from it. They are the ones who will endure to the end.
Who are we? We are estranged members—a remnant (Romans 9:27–33; 11:1–5, Isaiah 1:8–9, Revelation 12:13–17)—from the apostate body (2 Thessalonians 2:1–3) who sincerely love God’s revealed Truth from the heart (2 Thessalonians 2:10), willing to remain faithful to the end (Matthew 24:13). That Truth which was taught by Christ (John 14:6; 12:48–50), that Truth which Christ commissioned the Twelve Apostles to teach (Matthew 28:20). Which was the same message taught by the Apostle Paul (Galatians 1:6–16, 1 Thessalonians 2:12–14). Which was the same message taught by an end-time servant (Matthew 28:19–20). Which had significant beginning with Moses (Hebrews 4:1–3). The Truth which is now obeyed from a spiritual premise (2 Corinthians 3:1–11).
These are the people that God’s true ministry desires to serve. It is our purpose to give you our energy and our love.  Letter from Raymond Cole

In order for this blog post to have any enlightenment upon current members of COGTE, they would have to first read it, but most importantly, would have to come to believe what they are reading about JB in order to act. The fact of the matter is that most are asleep and roped in by fear that if they are not with Jon, then where? When you are so locked into a belief that you must be a member of a church that keeps a Monday Pentecost only, and never prove what the Bible really says; well, you will sit there out of both ignorance and fear. This is just classic behavior throughout history, nothing new. I get that some are catching on, but few. Listen, if you want to do your research to prove ALL things about Jon, start with his material just post Raymond's death. All letters and all audio. You will hear it if it is your time. Remember, how will you know a True Christian? By their fruits. That's your best yardstick to try a spirit. I can claim all day that I keep some version of a faith once delivered to the saints, but if the good fruits are not there over a judgeable period of time, then forget it.

Under Gods Law, HE cannot marry her. He should Just be happy with his own wife and stop lusting after Jons sister. Under Gods laws an unconverted mate is covered by the converted mate. Did Jon forget to tell this man this? If HE is in the church, then HE must follow Gods laws about how HE treats his wife. Col 3:19 How many times have we been told not everyone is called. Through showing love to his wife, he could win her over.

I was also victimized by one of the members in this Church, the person spread news I was sleeping with someone else in this Church, God did dealt abt that, I got my fair share of justice, bec something evil happened to that person.So yeah, be careful.

I'd like to hear a COGE member give me a reason why Mr Armstrong making prophetic predictions in God's name that didn't happen, doesn't disqualify the entire thing? For reference, the top of this very page, link "prophecies by decade" bottom right of top. There's a sermon series Jon should try.. Try all things people. Then when you say to yourself "if it wasn't the truth than where is it?" I remind you that JESUS is the truth. THAT is a ROCK to build on.

The person who said that Brisby is truth is just trying to rile people up. They know that is a foolish statement.

No work has been done, no teaching of any kind on self mastery or overcoming has been given. It's always the same. Are you agreeing with our doctrines, bla, bla, bla. Someone over there better get to feeding those sheep correctly, or they are going to be found receiving a greater condemnation. That, and those sheep are going to look for another home.

Jon has done a good job of pushing out all but the most loyal. He could pull down his pants and walk the aisle in diapers with a baby bonnet and binky to thunderous applause. He could say sell your house and fly to Petra and they would. Finally, the church is ready for the place of safety.

What do you think first tithes is for and holy day offering. People are supporting this work BUT Jon is not preaching the gospel to the world and neither did Mr Cole do that. Jon was never taught by Mr. Cole that it was important.

COGE was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of worldwide. That's their work. Problem is just about everyone who gives a crap about pre- 1974 worldwide, is either dead, on the way, or confined to a halfway house/nutt house/asylum. No one is looking for the deeper truth about brown sugar and Thanksgiving. Nobody wants to hear divorce doctrines from a church that tells people to divorce to protect their tithes. Nobody wants to be in a personality cult where a guy hoots at you like an owl for not being more like him. Nobody wants to hear your prayers are meaningless because God does what he wants whether you pray or not..unless you pray curses, then God listens. Nobody wants to hear about how Christmas trees are nimrods dick from a bunch of alcoholics. Nobody wants to hear about pork being salvational from a church founded by a false prophet 100x over. Nobody wants to be told what they can't buy with second tithe, then told to hand in their extra tithe after the feast.. so the church can buy more property.. nobody wants to go to a "church" where deacons promptly kick out any strangers. Worldwide never did any work besides pulling lukewarm Christians from other churches. It was never a gospel mission. It was a dogma operation.

Anon Friday, December 9, 2022 at 4:47 dude you nailed it on the head. It is a strange sort of box they exist in. How do I know? Because I existed in the same box at one time. It incorporates parts of the Bible, but only the parts that make them feel exclusive with God where no others are considered or allowed in. The problem with this is that it is in no way Biblical at all. I know there are good people there, many I know personally, but if they are not open to what the word actually says; and resist dusting off the Bible because of being afraid of being cursed, ostracized, or even being lost from salvation because they have been lied to, then all we can do is pray for them. So this is what I choose to do. The day will come when the antics of the Brisbies, the Packs, etc... will back fire. This is a guarantee.

anon Dec 9 140pm.. agreed. "The prayers of the righteous availeth much.". Who are the righteous? Those covered by the righteous blood of Jesus. One of many things that woke me up was when a friends life was in shambles, and I was trying to lead him to God. I realized that the cog was not a place to learn the basic gospel and lead people to Christ. I asked another friend who was a Christian to invite the troubled friend to church and he asked why I didn't invite him to My church. And I had to hmm and haw that my church wasn't the kind of place that takes in people from the street... The Christian friend looked at me perplexed and said these powerful words "what kind of church doesn't eagerly lead people to Christ? And take in those who need Him?". That's when my suspicions slapped me in the face.. I was in a cult. With such a heretical doctrine that they hold their doctrine exclusive, and believe that everyone will learn their doctrines after they die in a NON SCRIPTURAL second chance in the millennium. That's NOT in the bible folks. That's a doctrine made up by a man. A man who made false prophecies from the very beginning of his "ministry.". I began to pray for people on the news who suffered. I began to stop and help people on the side of the road, and pray for them. I helped someone push their broke down car out of traffic while on the way to a church social. I asked myself, "who would have stopped and helped from the group I was going to hang out with?". None probably. They all drove by. They hate people. They think they're God's only concern. More and more charitable predicaments crossed my paths, including many uncanny strangers who I suspect may have been angels. My mind began to open and realize what being a Christ believer was truly about. And those feelings stood out in sharp contrast to the spirit at the COG. Church became a very dark and depressing place that bothered my spirit. Sermons were about white rice and and drawn out series about doctrine technicalities on trivial matters. I had to leave. I had to run. But I had to battle a spirit of fear. Fear of "losing my salvation" for leaving their building. Fear that Armstrong was God's pope man. Fear that I was "leaving the truth." Jon himself has said "if you don't believe it, don't just leave, run.". How right he was. I want to be accounted with the sheep, not the goats. You have to drop it all and start over. You have to judge based on who's feeding the poor, visiting the sick, the imprisoned.. not who's doing a made up holy day ceremony on the "right day". Jesus is the truth, and His commandments trump a mix mash of mixed covenant doctrines made up by a guy who had no business being on the radio/tv. Armstrong was wrong on so many levels. It's not hard to prove using the very bible that he told you to blow the dust off of. You didn't. You just believed what he said, because he spoke athoritatively. And every COG mimics him. Yes, the COGS consist of gullible people. Lost, gullible man followers who have no idea where they truly stand with God to the very day they die. Sad. Scary. God will only wake your mind up when you finally look around and think WTF. When you finally have the cojones to question something without fear. Ask, seek, knock

It's a package deal. If youre there, it's because you're supposed to believe God is indwelling the minister, so what he says is directly from God. Excathedra. If you don't like it, don't let the door hit you on the way out. It's not that Jon gets in people's business, they are unable to or chose not to think for themself. Once you take that step to ask for advice, you're bound to take it, otherwise you will just so happen to be a coincidental indirect target of "I told you so" sermon material. You bring it on youtself. It's the name of the game. Play the game, or find a new parker brothers. Jon's time is only for believers. If you don't believe, and aren't 100% on board, why are you there? To waste everyone's time? The very whole basis of all COGS Is that God is using ONE man as the physical head of a spiritual body. Either he's the one or he's not. Chose wisely. If you're wrong, don't worry too much. You'll get a second chance to figure it out after death in the millenium. Because that's totally in the bible. Just blow off the dust on your bible, you'll find it. Totally in there

You assume I am member. Anyone can listen to the sermons for free on the website. Jons time is only for believers you say, well he then is not following Christ example at all. Christ had time for unbeliever and criminals, harlots. He had compassion for all. And what you said God is only using ONE man and yet Christ had 12 disciples and he told them to go out and make disciples of others. God uses many people to spread the word. Don't always assume those who post are members but maybe just observers. And yes, I do read the whole bible.

You have to follow the Herbert formula. Only a minister from direct tracible HWA ordination lineage is a real servant of God. Everybody else? false leaders who don't know the bible from their kitchen stove. Heretics that are deceived who will get their chance to actually know the truth in the millennium, after their first death (totally in the bible). HWA set the standard for the faith once delivered. I don't care what Jesus said. God's end time truth was revealed to just ONE man. He lost favor with God and Cole took the mantle. The torch has now been passed into Brisby's hand. He is now Gods representative on earth. What you think Jesus said means nothing. The bible is a coded book. Only a true servant of God can make sense of it. Learn your place and pay your tithe. Pay, pray, stay. God will take care of the ministers. You just need to be obedient.

Is HQ aware of what their "deaconess" out in TX is preaching? She is counselling an unstable man to leave his wife and home and move in with her. Most that attend there can tell he is not mentally competant and that she is taking advantage of the situation to her financial benefit. Its embarassing to watch.

Sinning maybe, yes...but they are not the lake of fire worthy.

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Please show me where in the Bible it says that if you don't keep a Monday Pentecost, or Pentecost correctly, you lose your salvation. While we are on the topic of Pentecost, let us do a little logical analysis.

Follow me COGTE and you Sunday keeping splinters as well. If you do yours according to Leviticus chapter 23, and you further attempt to prove this by reading Acts chapter 2: And when the day of Pentecost fully come. These are your go-to texts. Let me ask you; what was chapter 2 of Acts really about? Think. Have we experienced anything like this in our day and age? The answer is no. Why? Because this was a special "one-off" if you will. It was the beginning of the New Testament Church and its initial growth. Never have you seen anything of its kind to date. So, let's follow this logically. Since this example in the Bible is clearly a one-off, and it's what you build your whole technical argument off of from Leviticus 23 to get to either a Monday or a Sunday, or even a Sivan 6 (Keep in mind it was a one-off); please tell me when it was you individually as members in particular of the body of Christ received your down payment of the Holy Spirit? Baptism correct? Where were all the other brethren? Certainly not all with you in the same place in one accord. Do you see the picture now? Pentecost is your Baptism which is sacred, which is Holy to the Lord, which is a covenant with the Lord. Not keeping it on a Monday, a Sunday, or a Sivan 6. Nothing wrong with keeping either of these days, but guess what? Only as a rehearsal. PROVE ME WRONG.

I can prove you wrong, easy. First of all only a clown who can't read thinks pentecost is on Monday. 50 count. Not 51 count. The 50th year is jubilee right? Not the 51st. The bible clearly says 7 Sabbaths, 49 days complete then it's the pentecost. "Fully come" doesn't mean you add an extra day, it means the 49 days, 7 Sabbaths are completed. Cole never believed it was Monday. He made a choice to believe Armstrong was right even though it didn't make sense. As for the holy spirit, you receive it the moment you first believe, not from some magical dunking experience from a correct lineage WW minister. Baptism is a sign of obedience and outward proclamation of what God's done in your life, and as a public testimony. Back to pentecost, none are "doing it" correctly. They're just playing dress up. The bible has clear direction for how pentecost was to be celebrated. With no temple, no Levites, you're just making things up hoping for browny points in heaven. The first Christian pentecost was not "keeping it.". The were hanging out praying as they were instructed, and the fulfillment came. That's it. The shaddow became the reality. If anything if one felt compelled, that's the service they should mimic, get together and pray and glorify God. Not some rigid 2 service potluck schedule where you have sermons about Jesus being a liar if HWA wasn't God's man, or how saucy food and jello will send you to the lake of fire.

I don't even know what to think or say about Brisby anymore. He has went so far afield, and yet people are still following him over the cliff.

Aside from the warped and corrupt teaching he continues to spew, he is going to have a lot to answer for with the marriages he has meddled in. I know of at least 5 so far with 2 of them ending in separations. I would not want to be in his boots on judgement day.

Can you imagine that some people call Jon to see if they can listen to certain music. The music was praising God and Jon said no don't listen to it. It is sad people can't discern for themselves about things like that. When is it ever bad to listen to music praising God?

Their church is shrinking so small that they will be grouping all together at one site for their feast. They will have to stop renting the facility in Townsend Tenessee because it will cost them too much money. They will probably rent a small conference room in a library or motel soon.

NO, they will set up a tent on the property they bought there in Maryville Tenn. They have 5 acres with a house. They are spending thousands of dollars to rent the barn in Townsend. IN the last co-worker letter, Eugene (the office) will be a Feast site and Townsend. Plus, they are forced to buy two catered meals from the barn. Just my thoughts on this issue.

A physical church made up of physical members who are not being fed spiritual nourishment, will die. There is just no way around that fact. Those members are just going to have to sit there and watch it play out. Either get off the boat before it completely sinks so that you have some of your spiritual armor still in tact, or be the one who is most miserable at its demise.

I seem to remember the Apostle Paul reprimanding the church in Corinth for not putting such situations out of the church as a group. Seems like all look to the Supreme leader now, it is the primacy of Jon.

I listened to it. The Mark of the Beast seems to be what dietary laws we keep. Also, it is (all you peoples) fault for why there is no healing in the church. I think Jon turning into a vegan. In #4 he is going to tell us how much you can eat and what to eat. We are supposed to follow the hippy lifestyle. Like practice farm to table style of living. That means no crackers, chips, hotdogs, bread, and etc. In #3 he is playing down HWA because we are not to look to a man. It is very very hard for someone who has their whole spiritual livelihood wrapped up in an organization, to leave that organization. This is because at some point during their calling/conversion process, they began to transfer their focus from the spiritual (Jesus) onto the physical; in other words the building they sit in, the men speaking, their doctrine, etc... This is not something that is done necessarily on purpose, but is just a natural thing that progresses overtime. The other problem with this is that the men in "charge" who become aware of this behavior with the brethren, begin to do this themselves, thus the perverted teachings that begin to slip in, the ministers aggressive behavior and so forth. I can no more blame Jon, than I can those that sit before him. He is deceived, therefore he deceives.

The most important thing a member must do once the Holy Spirit begins to make them aware that things are not right, is to begin to reorient their focus back to their initial calling. The zeal they had for it. Christ did not call you to fail, but Satan wants you to, and he does not care by what means it happens. This is just one of many, discouragement. Keeping that in mind, once you begin to reorient and begin to see the picture clearly as to what has happened, you must then make an exit plan that will allow you to stay focused on that initial calling. Guess what? It may require you to sit it out alone for awhile, or seeking out others who were in the same boat, but be patient; God does deliver the answers, I know. Divorce yourself of all the fear tactic statements that you have been indoctrinated with over the years about losing your salvation. What is required of you only, is to stay the course regardless of what state you find yourself in.

Here is some of his speaking points, Rocket ride to hell 3 times, Firey death, headed for hell, damnation, hurdling to destruction, hurdling toward damnation, eternal death and the final one, if you don't listen, it will lead to destruction. I thought I was listening to a Baptist or Pentecostal minister, but no it was Jon. I think he was trying to scare people from leaving his little group.

The Forgotten Seven Day Feast. God Will make the truth Known!
Some smaller churches will be observing the Festival of Unleavened Bread in 2023 for the full seven days – but for most people, particularly those who were in the Worldwide Church of God, “The Feast” means Tabernacles. Very few are aware that the Church, under its former name, the Radio Church of God, also celebrated the Festival of Unleavened Bread for the full seven days – not just the two annual high days as now.
Roderick Meredith reported in the May, 1962, issue of The Good News magazine that,
“In SEVEN major Festivals here in America, plus others in England, Australia and around the world – a glorious season was observed this year! “THEREFORE let us KEEP THE FEAST …” (I Cor. 5:8).
In obeying this inspired New Testament COMMAND to Christians, over TEN THOUSAND brethren of God’s Church assembled this spring to observe the Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread. All reports indicate that there was GREAT JOY in this observance.”
Why then in 1968 (the year the church was renamed Worldwide) were all the festival sites discontinued? – Money.
Herbert Armstrong wanted church members to be in a financial position to contribute heavily toward “the Gospel” – according to the article Days of Unleavened Bread – How Should They Be Observed? [p.4] by the Church of God the Eternal (supporting the change to observing the 2 high days only).
“… the receipt of income for “the Gospel” was appreciably reduced each Spring, because most of the members did not receive any salary or wages during the week they attended the seven Days of Unleavened Bread. Consequently, tithes and offerings dropped off alarmingly in the Spring …
It was felt by Mr. Armstrong that if the Gospel were to continue to go forth with growth and power, the membership would have to be in a financial position to contribute heavily. The observance of the Days of Unleavened Bread for the full seven days was thwarting this effort.”

We definitely should be keeping ULB ! As a new member I’m shocked at knowing that we celebrated and assembled on all those days. No wonder it’s called the Feast. We should return to those truths. Talk about faith once delivered but walk the path not just lip service as we do. Radio church of God had Devine truth.

in that are PEOPLE are crying out for truth.

making a significant contribution. We are now seeing some

To people who do not believe in prophesies, I would like to say that if there was no God who gave His Apostles foreknowledge of mighty events, then who was it that told Ezekiel two thousand and five hundred years ago that Russia would embark upon a program of world conquest, aggression and aggrandisement, so that God’s wrath would be kindled against it and the punishment from heaven would leave its power in ruins. Priest John should tell his sister that online romance with a married man same as adultery, right! He should fire her and disfellowship her. Church leadership should not be allowed to do what lay members aren't.

With as business minded as JB claims to be, absolutely those trips should be cut out. There is no reason to be using tithe on plane tickets and living quarters to go visit 15 people in a far off country. I guarantee if you did a cost analysis, the benefit to putting that money where it is really needed, would far out way a paid vacation by the brethren. Does anyone really think he is traveling to these far off locations to "feed the sheep"? Come on, look at the message content.

Jon has not been honest for a long time. He just came back from Australia from a 2-week vacation to meet with 7 people. He and Kim are coming home from France and Switzerland. They have less than 20 people in both countries. Why not have zoom meeting if it that important?

Your absolutely correct. It can easily be done over zoom. Spending thousands on trips, when he should be looking at those that truly need it in the church. The Bible warned us against men like this, but to many people are caught up in following these men that they become blinded. It plays out time after time.

They must have changed their doctrine about women preaching. The deaconess down in Texas sure likes her authority. She is counselling a mentally unstable man to hide money from his wife, disrespect and lie to his wife. She has instructed him to hide thousands of dollars from his wife and give to the deaconess. She has put pressure on him to leave his wife and move in with her because she is playing the poor old broke lady victim. She taught him how to hide money and structure cash into money orders so his wife wont find out.
