People Don’t Trust Organized Religion Anymore, Reports Church Currently on Its Third Letterhead

In light of a recent poll revealing that only 36 percent of Americans have “a great deal or quite a lot of confidence” in organized religion, the Church of God, a Worldwide Association, has decided the public needs a lecture.

From them.

About trust.

One would hope that institutions claiming to represent Jesus Christ would be among the most respectable bodies on earth. One would also hope that a fellowship whose corporate history looks like a custody battle would develop a sense of timing. Hope, as Gallup keeps reminding us, is not data.

Until 1985, church and organized religion topped Gallup’s confidence survey. Then people started counting the bodies, the bank accounts, and the press releases. The original article is not wrong about the usual suspects: televangelists, cover-ups, leaders who preach holiness and practice something with a better expense account. It is only incomplete. It leaves out the quieter specialty of certain Churches of God: discovering, every decade or so, that last year’s “faithful remnant” has become this year’s problem.

After Herbert W. Armstrong died, the Worldwide Church of God changed its doctrines. Men who had spent years telling members this was God’s government on earth suddenly discovered it was an apostasy. In 1995 they formed the United Church of God so the truth could be preserved without all that unfortunate new Protestantism. Fifteen years later, a large group of those same men discovered that UCG’s leadership, governance, and “direction” were also intolerable. On December 23, 2010, they incorporated again. New name. Same certainty. Fresh stationery.

That wasn't a sex scandal. It is something drier and, in its way, more instructive: a talent for leaving, then explaining that this departure was the spiritual one. The first exit was doctrine. The second was “fundamental disagreements” and the “conduct and direction of its leadership.” In plain English: the brethren were still the brethren until the vote went the wrong way.

The article quotes Jesus on hypocrites — “whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones.” A bold choice. The tomb keeps getting a new coat of paint and a new acronym. WCG. UCG. COGWA. The bones travel well.

It then performs the expected piety pivot. Don’t just blame “organized religion.” Examine yourself. Is your life organized according to God’s Word? If Gallup could survey God, would He have confidence that you represent Him?

Wonderful questions. They would sting more if they were not being asked by an editor who helped run one version of the church, then helped launch the sequel when the first sequel disappointed. Clyde Kilough was not a bystander in this genealogy. He was management. The survey God might conduct is not only of private prayer lives. It might include how often the same men have told the same people that this organization is the one that finally got government right.

What the piece wants, it says, is not a human-led revival of churches but a Christ-led transformation of each individual. A moving conclusion. It would be more moving if the people delivering it had not already demonstrated that “the body of Christ” can be reincorporated whenever the council meeting goes badly.

Americans lack confidence in organized religion for many reasons, some of them ugly and some of them earned. A church that split from a church that split from a church, then published an essay about everyone else’s credibility problem, is not a mystery of the age. It is the punchline arriving late, in a suit, with a scripture.

If Gallup ever adds a category for “organizations that lecture the public on trust after leaving their last organization,” the numbers will not surprise anyone who has kept the old directories.

Only then, we are told, can true Christianity take its rightful place of spiritual leadership in the world.

==============================================================

In light of a recent poll revealing that only 36 percent of Americans have “a great deal or quite a lot of confidence” in organized religion, it’s time for something different.

One would hope that institutions claiming to represent Jesus Christ would be among the most respectable bodies on earth. Yet a 2025 Gallup Poll revealed that only 36 percent of Americans have “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in church or organized religion. This continues a 50-year slide, with no signs the downhill trend will reverse.

I suspect similar trends exist elsewhere, particularly in the Western, Judeo-Christian world.

An embarrassing lack of confidence

Until 1985 the church and organized religion rated highest among the institutions in Gallup’s annual “Confidence in Institutions” survey. But since then, it has slipped to sixth place, behind small business, the military, science, the police and higher education.

Actually, the entire survey should dishearten Americans. What does it say about a nation when the large majority of its citizens lack faith in the institutions that guide and govern them? The presidency, banks, public school system, Supreme Court, criminal justice system, big business and television news fare even worse, and Congress ranks last with only 10 percent!

But those institutions are different from religion—none of them claim to represent God. Why are the religious institutions suffering this embarrassing loss of respectability?

One major reason is the string of horrific sins and scandals—from televangelists’ sexual escapades to priests’ molestation of children to the corruption of church cover-ups—that have devastated people’s trust, support, belief and faith. Religious leaders are supposed to help us rise above—not descend into—the worst weaknesses of human nature!

Jesus’ harsh words for hypocrites

There’s nothing new under the sun, though. Jesus aimed His harshest words at the religious leaders who acted very pious but were, as He called them, hypocrites, “whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones” (Matthew 23:27). Their religious practices were highly organized, but their spiritual lives were chaotic.

And long before Jesus’ time, God’s prophets repeatedly emphasized that while each person was culpable for the sins destroying Israel, much of the blame lay at the doorstep of the religious leaders. The Bible abounds with warnings about the damage done, including loss of credibility, when church leaders do not live up to the standards they preach.

If Gallup could survey God

It’s easy then—and not entirely undeserved—to blame church leaders or “organized religion,” as some like to label it. But whether we are leaders, followers or outside observers, we have to take care not to look only at others. God also commands each of us to dig deeply within to examine our own hearts.

So here’s a twist on “organized religion” in the form of questions we need to ask ourselves and honestly answer:

1. Is my—or my church’s—belief system truly organized according to God’s Word?

2. Is my personal life and behavior truly organized according to God’s Word?

Or ask it this way: If Gallup could survey God, would He say He has a great deal of confidence that I truly represent Him and His way of life?

What we really need is not a human-led revival of churches, but a Christ-led character transformation of each individual. One where we will be, as Paul described in Romans 12:2, “transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Only then can true Christianity begin to take its rightful place of spiritual leadership in the world.

Is this the repentance of the COGawa ministry? Is Clyde initiating a cleansing process which will ultimately percolate downwards into the membership of his splinter?

Or is it just another example of HWA's blame game on the "dumb sheep"?

I suppose we'll eventually know, but it's certainly way late in the game, and suspiciously follows John Elliott's latest initiatives.

We'll see!

In Armstrongism and its offshoots, “organized according to God’s Word” is code for: Hierarchical government and a dogma they are the only one true church. - they are not.

Yes many people have lost faith in religion and especially organised religion. Our own experiences within the Armstrong movement attests to this. As we read in Jeremiah cursed is the man who trusts in man. The Armstrong movements very own divisions witness against them. Cheers.

Well, is cogwa, setting an example for the rest of us, in "...its rightful place of spiritual leadership in the world?

God's Church, one Body, is an approximately 2,000-year-old Church, and not just some man-made sole ASSociation, ORGanization or group.

The one Body has many members.

Clyde asked: "...If Gallup could survey God, would He say He has a great deal of confidence that I truly represent Him and His way of life?..."

What would God say about any or all of those fleeing hirelings who abandoned members/sheep of the former WCG, like Clyde himself, Franks, Pack, Flurry, Coulter, Weinland, Weston, Winnail, etc.?

Did God cause any/all of these individuals to cease feeding His flock (Ezek 34:10), in a sense saying: "You're fired?"

Would God say that some/all of them fed and clothed themselves well (Ezek 34:2-30)?

Time is telling, but Clyde mentioned Romans 12:2, but does not tell who is doing the transforming: something that SELF cannot do. Clyde apparently believes that SELF can transform itSELF, renew one's own mind, and prove something to SELF, or to God, but God does the works (Acts 15:18; Heb 4:3), not SELF. Clyde puts a heavy burden on the people, a burden that Clyde himself cannot do, and has not done.

Look at Rom 12:3 "For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think [of himself] more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith."

Clyde thinks of himself more highly than he ought, and he is telling the members to do the same, but without God, by His Spirit (Zech 4:6), doing some work in an individual, for example by providing that fruit of faith by measure/proportion (Rom 12:6), then one will not have it. God must do it.

How many of the hirelings who fled from the former WCG demonstrated a lack of faith that God could solve the WCG problems without a bunch of men running off to do their own thing in a way that seemed right to them?

Oh, that will of God? God provides that to all of those He begins/starts any work within (Phil 2:13); you don't need to prove it.

God just does it. God, not SELF, gets all of the glory and honor and praise for what He does.

I personally have confidence and believe that God would have confidence in His Church, composed of members, sealed Firstfruits, wherever they are scattered on earth, as mentioned by Paul's words:

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform [it] until the day of Jesus Christ:" Phil 1:6

God does that work. It is not done by SELF.

Within God's approximate 2,000-year-old church, that is a done deal, or God is a liar.

United, cogwa, scattered ASSociations, ORGanizations, groups are not solely God's Church (Rev 2-3); however, have members, (very possibly embedded within many of those WCG split-offs) of God's 2000-year-old Church fulfilled their: "...rightful place of spiritual leadership in the world?..."

I believe so, but time will tell...

People do not trust organized religion, or organized anything. It's all self-serving politics.

COGWA would be hard to trust just based on the premise of their own beginning.

Tell you what. If I had to guess, I'd say that back in 1995, there were a number of people laying awake at night with one big question on their minds: "How do I save my salvation???"

That's when all the substitutes and patches came into play. Now the mantra seems to be "close is close enough". None have perfectly preserved the original. People know this but have lowered their expectations to what is available.

8:25, what was the premise for their beginning? Was it not that the UCG heads sinned in their eyes, so "they had to run"? Think of it. A squabble among the elites who couldn't forgive one another, who had to get their own way or else. These are the ones teaching and always accusing us of self-righteousness and causing division.

Meanwhile UCG got a taste of their own medicine from the COGWAites, i.e., "I am the boss here, it's my will or the highway, you're self-righteous, you're dishonest, your criticisms are harsh so I am authorized by God to cut you off. I am holier and more righteous than you. You are self-righteous. I cannot forgive you because you are wrong. This admin matter is too important for us to stay together. This is so irreconciliable that even Christ's blood cannot reconcile us. Sorry. No hard feelings. Just an amicable split that is justified in the eyes of God. God knows I'm right".

I dare say that Kilough is calling us to repentance when he speaks of a Christ-led inner transformation. Hummmm, how do we distinguish a Christ-led one from a human-led one?

“People Don’t Trust Organized Religion Anymore, Reports Church Currently on Its Third Letterhead”

People REALLY DO need to BE CAREFUL!!!

The numerous disorganized so-called COGs cannot be trusted either.

The advertised true Christians with the Holy Spirit who were just trying to obey and please God were usually nowhere to be found, while malicious perverts with evil spirits seemed to abound.

The WCG/GCI and its splinter groups were full of apostates, false prophets, fake ministers, false brethren, kooks, perverts, and predators.

People REALLY DO need to BE CAREFUL!!!

Anon, interesting historical perspective on ucg/cogwa, but while Clyde wrote about some Christ-led inner transformation, and you questioned about the difference between Christ-led, and human-led, there is one more option provided by the Apostle Paul, and that is satanic-led:

2 Cor 11:13 "For such [are] false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
:15 Therefore [it is] no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works."

Once upon a time, Jim Franks believed that he had found his home in the United Ass., and then years later thought he was part of a non-Christ-led Association, and went off to establish another home: cogwa. Is the day coming when he may be voted out, and he will be searching for another home?

David Hulme also was looking for a home, thought it was in United, but was subsequently voted out and off he went in search of another home? What about Kubik? Etc.

What sort of an organization exists that votes its leaders in and out, apparently because God never provided them with a servant-leader? Would God author such confusion?

So far, Jim Franks has endured a former WCG home, a “(dis) United” home, and a CogwAss. home…Is it possible that Jim Franks’ cogwAss. may just be another one of many of Satan's counterfeit churches with his transformed (deceived?) ministers…posing to be righteous “light-bringers” of “God’s Church?”

Time will tell...

John, the WCG didn't overtly attack self love or SELF. Occasionally they did, but typically covertly, since they knew it clashed with the bible's "love your neighbour AS YOURSELF."
That you harp on this point means you must have a background with another non Armstrong denomination.
Btw, God in the NT and Christ in the NT used the word "I" umpteen times.

9.06 pm, My observation over many years is that the long term benefit of being a member of any organization is zero. In the near term, one can get ahead, especially if being love bombed as a new member, but they eventually take back everything given.

Some Problems With Organized Religion

One big problem is that the Roman Catholic Church and almost all of its Protestant daughter churches teach people to despise and trample on God's holy, weekly, seventh-day Sabbath of rest, and instead teach them to observe Sunday, the first day of the week.

Another big problem is that the Roman Catholic Church and almost all of its Protestant daughter churches teach people to ignore, reject, and despise God's annual festivals in three different seasons (three different lunar months) of the year with their seven annual Sabbaths, and instead teach them to observe things like Christmas, Easter, and Halloween.

Yet another big problem with the Roman Catholic Church and almost all of its Protestant daughter churches is that they teach people that God's good laws about clean and unclean animals are done away with and that people should be happy to be free to eat all sorts of disgusting unclean creatures.

The Roman Catholic Church and its Protestant daughter churches are full of all sorts of other wrong teachings as well. They pretend to believe in God and to love him while their whole religion looks like it is all about actually doing the exact opposite of whatever God said.

My early church experience as a child was in the Methodist Church. And, then my parents fell for the HWAcaca, and the abuse and weirdness set in. Kids that grew up in the Catholic and Protestant churches, my classmates in the public schools, weren't getting beaten three times a day, got to go to the doctor for checkups and appropriate medical care, and didn't learn stupid conspiracy theories about the end of the USA.

There really was no comparison between those churches and HWA's church. They were a minor sniffle, and the R/WCG was full blown pneumonia! I know. I existed in both worlds. I wish that I had only been lied to about Santa Claus!

In the past, some Roman Catholics actually murdered Protestants who had beliefs that were more biblical than their own beliefs. Also, some Protestants actually murdered other Protestants who had beliefs that were more biblical than their own beliefs.

The future could hold the Roman Catholic Church once again being in a position to get the state to kill people who have beliefs that are more biblical than its own beliefs.

Ok. So Muslims in Europe had better watch out, right? I believe that is going to be the next bout of ethnic cleansing on the global scene. Nobody's going to care about a couple thousand sabbath keepers.

Think about it for a moment! The essence of what Mr. Kilough is saying is that this lack of trust excuses his church's failed performance. It is a slightly different tone of whining than we hear from Bob Thiel, but if God were really behind these guys, He would certainly find ways to make their work exceptions to a general trend.

And black people with German nationality were also persecuted and killed during WWII.

FIRST:

The Holy Bible says what it says about the weekly Sabbath, annual festivals, clean and unclean animals, etc., regardless of how you have behaved from your youth on up.

The Holy Bible says what it says about the weekly Sabbath, annual festivals, clean and unclean animals, etc., regardless of how your parents raised you.

SECOND:

The Holy Bible does not say to beat your little children mercilessly every day.

The Holy Bible does not say that you cannot go to doctors.

The Holy Bible does not say that you cannot go to university and get a good higher education.

The Holy Bible does not say to make up wrong prophetic date guesses for a lifetime.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

1. Young children need to be taught God's good laws so they can know right from wrong. Sometimes children need to be corrected. However, swatting them the full forty swats for every real or imagined fault, and doing this two or three times a day, is simply insane.

2. Sometimes doctors can literally save your life. Other times they might not be able to help you, or might even make mistakes and harm you. For example, getting the experimental mRNA Poison Death Shots that came with the ConJob-19 Plandemic/Scamdemic can be bad for your health. See https://openvaers.com

3. Herbert W. Armstrong was absolutely right that modern higher education does have an evilutionary, anti-God bias. However, this does not make it wrong to learn such things as calculus, physics, chemistry, biology, music, languages, history, etc. If you really want to avoid all unnecessary evil influences, then simply turn off the television and stop watching all the garbage on it. Do not watch it on the Internet either.

4. Even Herbert W. Armstrong himself was simply guessing wrong for his entire 52-year religious career about when the end of the age would come. God never revealed it to him, and HWA was not able to figure it out for himself.
