It has always amazed me at how ludicrous Bob Thiel can be at times with some of the stuff he latches on to. The Mayan calendar has no meaning whatsoever to anyone who is a Christian, but to pagans, like Bob Thiel, it is significant.
I think you hit the nail on the head with Bob Thiel. As a practitioner of homeopathy, which at one time was considered part of the dark arts and still is in many circles, Bob would naturally be inclined to follow the Mayans and other pagan groups in regards to what their prophets or traditions say. Not content to follow Jesus Christ, he has to set up his own rules and myths as somehow relevant to Christians.
Catholic scholars of old and Mayan fortune tellers are like HWA. They radiate confidence and authority in their predictions, but they're only guessing. I just read another such end time prediction on a non HWA splinter site. Reading their article, one would think that God spoke to them or that they possess secret knowledge that they're hiding from everyone else. But this impression is calculated deceit. They are just guessing, and their guess is no better than yours or mine.
Oddly enough, there are several cliched Armstrongite reasons for checking in with the Mayans, Nostradamus, or whomever. One would be to catalogue their failures, to compare their prophecy batting average to that of sabbath and holy day keepers. Unfortunately, there is no difference in favor of the Armstrongites or anyone else from the Adventist movement. They've all failed. Armstrongites do not admit failure. They recategorize their failures as being postponement of the inevitable.
The second cliche is that the cunning old snake, or "devil" uses a mixture of truth and lies in weaving his counterfeits. Therefore, it behooves Christians to be aware of what Satan's people (which is what they call the Mayans, and Catholics) have to say, just to see if their insights are of any value, or to prove them wrong.
The third factor in doing such research is that it gives a false aura of intellectual objectivity. However, in the end, it's all the same old cherry-picking and proof-texting, riddled with bias confirmation.

'Bwana-Bob' also teaches salvation-by-works just like high-school-dropout-HWA, making them both Pagan.

Catholic universities in Europe and America have a long history. They has an intellectual wing going back centuries.
Intellectual wing is made up of Catholic priests and francesco monks. Cathuc scholars are Catholic priests and such.
Catholics, and Jews were/are intensive records keepers. Makes it very easy to trace history and the evolution of religion from their perspectives.
